MALDIVES CHINA DEPOLAMATIC RELATIONS


Over three decades ago, on 14 October 1972, the very first steps for promoting intergovernmental cooperation between the Maldives and China were taken. Since then both Governments and its peoples have played important and active roles in strengthening the ties of friendship between the two countries. Regular consultations on economic development, cultural exchanges, promotion of tourism and discussions on various issues of common interest during high level visits have all contributed to nurture the strong bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two countries. Until 2007, the Embassy of the People's Republic of China, in Colombo, accredited to the Maldives acted as the major player in fostering these relations. However, in order to further strengthen the existing friendly relations between the two countries, the Government of Maldives opened its first Embassy in Beijing on 20 August 2007. The brief period of its existence has witnessed the Embassy playing an active role and contributing significantly in areas of mutual interest for both countries. China, despite being a developing country itself, has always been a generous partner in extending support and cooperation to the Maldives in diverse fields. Maldives remain grateful to China for its continued assistance. Maldives and China share similar views on a number of regional and international issues, including that of Taiwan. As such, Maldives supports a oneChina policy.

Agreements
Maldives has signed several bilateral agreements and Memorandum of Understanding with China. Among them are Agreements on Economic and Technical Cooperation, Mutual Exemption of Visas and Visa Fees, on Education Cooperation, on Cultural Cooperation and various other important areas of mutual interest.

Assistance
Since 1981, China has continued to provide project assistance and equipment support in a number of areas. The Housing Projects undertaken with Chinese assistance is of particular significance and has helped to partly reduce the pressure in Male for housin g needs. Also other infrastructure projects such as the Construction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building and Construction of the National Museum deserve special mention here. Thaara Folk Music

Thaara Folk Music


Thaara is a popular form of folk music performed in Maldives. The credit for its introduction in the Maldives goes to the Gulf Arabs, who visited this beautiful island in the mid 17th century. In the Thara folk music of Maldives, there are about 22 performers, who are made to seat in two parallel rows facing each other. It is only the men who can participate in Thaara. This folk performance involves both singing and dancing. Traditionally, Thaara folk music was performed in the fulfillment of vows. Earlier, the songs that accompanied the Thara were in Arabian language. Thaara songs start at a slow tempo and then gradually pick up to reach a crescendo.
