Wandsworth Common Beer Festival 5th Annual - 2013 27-31 March 2013 PRELIMINARY BEER LIST

- please note: final beer list will include additional beers and may include different beers from these brewers, due to whats available.

1648 Brewery, East Hoathly, West Sussex


1.Laughing Frog 5.2%. Brewed by a Frenchman in a Belgian style. Amber/gold lightly hopped so more malty and sweetish, just like our long serving chef Jean-Marie! Very good beer. Must try.

Arundel Brewery, Arundel West Sussex


2.Castles 3.8% A tawny coloured beer with hoppy aroma. Nicely balanced flavour between malty and hoppy.

B & T Shefford, Bedfordshire


3.Albion Ale 4.0% Refreshing full bodied golden ale with a rich aroma. Slightly nutty with fruity overtones and a dry finish.

Belleville Brewing, Jaggard Way, Wandsworth **NEW BREWERY


4.Battersea Brownstone 4.8% U.S. style Brown Ale; fruity and nutty with caramel and toffee flavours derived from the chocolate and crystal malts. Spice notes detected from the Bullion and Golding hops. 5.Chestnut Porter 4.9% Layers of roasted nuts and toasted malts coming through on the palate 6.Commonside Pale Ale 5.0% Fresh as mown grass, golden and sparkling. U.S. style Pale Ale packed with flavour. 7.Thames Surfer 5.7% A West Coast IPA style packed with hops

Burscough Brewery, Burscough Lancashire


8.Priory Gold 3.8% Golden session ale. Initially slightly sweet but then hops come through with citrus finish redolent of pine and lemon. 9.Mere Blonde 4.0% Pale thirst quenching golden ale and prominent citrus hop aroma.

Burton Bridge, Burton on Trent, Staffordshire


10.Damson Porter 4.5% Burton is noted for its strong ale (see below) But here is a speciality mid gravity beer. Dark and fruity with addition of damson juice giving a distinctive bitterness. 11.Stairway To Heaven 5.0% Full flavoured golden hoppy beer. Easy drinking but still strong. 12.Thomas Sykes 10% A full on barley wine. Deceptively easy drinking, so be careful. How can you leave the festival without trying at least a half of this brewing blockbuster.

13.Stiff Bitter Lip 4.0% If youre old enough to remember ordering a light & bitter Then this is a chance to re-live the experience with another beer made especially for this festival. A half and half, bitter and light ale brew. 14.Mayor of Garratt 4.3% A London best bitter developed by Chris and Alex in an attempt to create a new London style of beer rather than copy existing recipes. Very drinkable. Sold a 72 pint firkin in just one session when first sampled on March 10th at Le Gothique. Excellent beer. May run out early as deservedly popular. Name derived form eccentric fashion of electing a Peoples Mayor outside local pubs in our area. 15.Hopslinger American Pale Ale 4.7% Brewed with Amarillo and Chinook hops. As the name suggests. A light coloured big and hoppy ale. 16.Diamond Geezer 4.9% A red beer. Big bold malty and in yer face. Sweet to start, then nutty, then hoppy finish. 17.Double Diamond Geezer 4.9% As above but with the addition of a double dose of late delivered hops to the final brew. 18.Lambeth Walk Vanilla Whiskey Special 5.4% A one-off vanilla and whiskey flavoured Porter brewed for this festival. Must try. 19.Lambeth Slinger 5.6% A black indian pale ale brewed especially for this festival by our glass sponsors.

Cornish Crown, Penzance, Cornwall ***NEW BREWERY***


20.St. Michaels. 4.0% No, its not brewed by Marks & Spencer but a new brewery started in 2012. An amber lightish brew with moderately bitter finish. First time available in London.

Country Life Brewery, Bideford, Devon

21.Devon Piglet 4.0% Amber coloured and brewed with Challenger hops to give a balanced hop/malt finish. 22.Devonshire Ten-der 10.0% Normally only available at the brewery tap for Country Life which is Laceys in Bideford. A monster 10 percenter. Golden amber, dark roasted malt, bitter finish. Brought by van to London especially for this festival.

Crate Brewery, Hackney Wick, London ***NEW BREWERY***


23.Golden Ale 3.8% A bright golden ale with a crisp hop finish. 24.Crate Best Bitter 4.3% A full bodied bitter with biscuity malt and delicate hop flavours. 25.Crate IPA 5.8% A deep rich, well balanced IPA packed with Summit and Chinook hops.

Dartmoor Brewery, Princetown, Devon


26.IPA 4.0% Full bodied amber coloured hoppy ale. The brewery was originally called Princeton but changed name to Dartmoor in 2008. 27.Jail Ale 4.8% Perfection in a glass. A hoppy but fruity mid brown beer with a slightly sweet aftertaste. This is the beer favoured by all students from Plymouth university. Very drinkable and a personal favourite of mine. Must try.

Downlands Brewery, Catsfield, West Sussex ***NEW BREWERY***


28.Truleigh Gold 3.7% A pale ale with subtle citrus, orange and apricot flavours. From this brewery started in late 2012. 29.Ruskins Ram 4.0% Traditional bitter named and brewed with water from the nearby Ruskins Ram pump at Fulking Spring. Subtle aroma of vanilla and elderflower. 30.Devils Dyke 5.0% Porter made from wonderful blend of Black, Crystal and chocolate malts then balanced with Challenger hops. 31.Three Rings 5.2% A strong pale ale. Bitter, but with a satisfying fruity finish.

Downton Salisbury, Wiltshire


32.Chocolate Orange 5.8% Consistently a festival crowd pleaser. Very chocolately and very orangey. Must try.

33.Chimera IPA 6.8% IPAs were originally sent out to our forces in India as a supplement to inferior and foul tasting water supplies with the hops acting as both a preservative and flavour enhancer. This style has subsequently been re interpreted again in the U.S. as a strong and hoppy beer.

Elland Brewery, Elland, West Yorkshire


34.Merry Whistle Blower 3.9% Pale amber with a refreshing bitter palate from Northdown hops. Satisfying beer well worth a try.

Emsworth Brewery, Hampshire ***NEW BREWERY***


35.Slipper 3.7% A new brewery operating from a shed behind an antiques shop near the harbour. Mid brown colour, lightly hopped, mature and satisfying. Discovered by Tony Condon, Londons No.1 top builder who says this is brilliant and well worth a try. He also finds lots of bargains in the antiques shop.

36.Phils Ale 4.8% Wonderful beer brewed with a multitude of hops and only Devons finest malts. Please try to sample at least a half of this as it has been brewed in memory of Phil Roberts with proportion of sales going to a charity.

Fuller, Smith & Turner, Chiswick, London


37Gales Spring Sprinter 4.0% The Nelson Sauvin hop from New Zealand is used here to create a blond/gold ale with a hint of gooseberry. 38Fullers Brit Hop 4.0% A new beer from Fullers brewed in conjunction with brewer and blogger Hardknot Dave. 39Fullers ESB 5.5% The flagship premium bitter from the masters over at Chiswick. As good today as ever. Unlike other premium bitters the ABV has not been reduced or recipe continually changed (like Youngs Special) 40Golden Pride 8.5% Another first for the Wandsworth Common Festival. This is Fullers wonderful golden barley wine on draught as opposed to the bottle version normally available. Truly excellent.

Full Moon Brewery, Henley Down, East Sussex ***NEW BREWERY***

41Hopdance 3.9% Pale gold ale made with Crystal malts. Floral aroma redolent of melon and ripe fruit. Dry and refreshing. 42Celestial 4.3% Straw coloured blonde beer made using extra pale Marris Otter. Light and summery. 43Red Pacific 4.8% A ruby red ale inspired by U.S. amber ales plus some powerful Australian hops giving tropical fruit aroma. An American yeast culture gives smooth strong beer full of character without being too heavy or sweet.

Fyne Ales of Cairndow, Argyll, Scotland


44 Avalanche 4.5% Straw coloured fruity ale with lemony foretaste developing a grapefruit twist. Very pleasant and easy drinking.

Green Jack Brewery, Lowestoft, Suffolk


45 Trawlerboys 4.6% Gold medal winner in Best Bitter class and overall Runner-up Champion Beer of Britain 2012 at Great British Beer Festival. You simply must try to find out what all the fuss is about.

Hastings Brewery, St.Leonards-On-Sea, East Sussex.


46 Hastings Blonde 3.9% American hops are used in conjunction with elderflower in this super refreshing beer from the South Coast. Sweet, bitter and hoppy. 47 Hastings Best 4.1% A traditional best bitter made with classic English hops. 48Hastings Porter 4.5% Lovely dark beer thats a lighter style of porter. All the classic porter flavours are therecoffee, liquorice and chocolate. But theyre not so heavy handed as are some porters. 49Hastings Pale Ale 4.7% An international beer if there ever was one with hops from U.S., Czech, Germany, and England. Hoppy, citrussy and spicy all in one glass. Excellent. Must try

Heart Of Wales, Llanwrtyd, Powys, Wales


50 Welsh Black 4.4% Some would consider that all new breweries should have their own water supply as opposed to simply drawing off the local tap. Brewed using its own water drawn from a bore hole. Black, complex and smooth. Full of flavour, hint of liquorice.

Hop Kettle Brewery, Cricklade, Wiltshire **NEW BREWERY**


51 Northwall 4.2% Started in late 2012 and this is their first beer. Brown ale with full bodied and lingering mellow bitterness. Please give this a try.

Itchen Valley Brewery, Alresford, Hampshire


52 Battle of Cheriton 4.4% A bright golden brown ale made from Cara malts. The Fuggles hop then creates a gentle softness with a fruity nose. Good honest English ale.

Jacobi Brewery, Pumsaint, Carmarthenshire, Wales


53 Original 4.4% Justin Jacobi started this 8 barrel brewery in 2006. Brownish, malty beer one to try if you have over-killed on hoppy beers.

Jollyboat Brewery, Bideford, Devon


54Contraband 5.8% Brewery was started in 1995 and all beers have a nautical theme. Rarely found outside West Country. So sample now while you can. Dark brown, with coffee and caramel tasting notes. But a citrus finish.

Loddon Brewery, Dunsden, Oxfordshire


55 Bamboozle 4.8% Straw coloured pale ale with malty overtones but a hoppy finish.

North Yorkshire Brewing Company (NYBC) Guiseborough


56 Honey Bunny 4.2% Golden coloured bitter with a hoppy finish. Crisp and refreshing with a hint of honey. 57 Valhalla 5.5% A strong traditional English bitter with plenty of hops and subtle malty flavour.

Noss Beer Works Noss Mayo, South Hams, Devon


58 Church Ledge 4.0% Named after the reef that lies at the mouth of Yealm river. A late hopped IPA style beer with zesty, hoppy aroma. Winner of Newton Abbot beer festival 2012. Must try.

Ordnance Brewery, Somerset ***NEW BREWERY***

59 Mark Three 4.3% A light brown well hopped best bitter. First time available anywhere outside the West Country. Name suggests this might be his third attempt. Please give it a try and provide us with some feedback.

Orkney Brewery Quoyloo, Orkney


60 Dragonhead Stout 4.0% Legendary dark stout from the most northerly brewery in the British Isles. Dark, intense and full flavoured. Bitter chocolate, roasted coffee and smoky notes are tempered by spicy Golding hops.

Peerless Brewery Birkenhead, Wirral.


61 Viking Gold 4.6% Well balanced golden ale. The initial bitterness from the Summit and Golding hops leads to citrus fruit and a crisp, dry finish.

RCH of West Hewish, Somerset


62 Hewish Mild 3.6% A dark traditional mild with good body (not always the case with some milds) and a bittersweet finish. 63 Shamrock 4.5% Dont worry its not green. Rather its a pale brown bitter with Fuggles and Target hops making a change from the usual stout for toasting St.Patrick.

Roosters Brewery, Knaresborough, North Yorkshire


64True Grit 3.9% Named after the 1969 John Wayne film of the same name. Bold pale ale with citrus aromas and a long finish.

Rocky Head Brewery, Kimber Road, Wandsworth ***NEW BREWERY***


65 Rocky Head 6.5% An American inspired Pale Ale available here for the first time on draught as opposed to bottle. Another first for the Wandsworth Common Festival. This is the nearest of the 4 yes, FOUR breweries now operating in Wandsworth since the demise of the Youngs brewery. Each captivating the spirit and tradition of brewing in this London borough.

Rhymney Brewery, Glamorgan ***NEW BREWERY***


66 Black & Tan 4.0% Smooth and delicious brownish ale. First time served outside Wales. Must try.

Sambrooks Battersea, London


Pumphouse Pale Ale 4.2% Zesty and light with a wonderful citrus aroma. The first
sambrooks beer not to be entrirely made from English ingredients. With New Zealand Hallertau and Celeia hops.

67 Powerhouse Porter 4.9% My favourite of all the Sambrooks beers. A dark brown porter with very pleasant roasted malt nose. The flavour is of caramelised fruit. A delicious pint.

Sarah Hughes Brewery Sedgley, Dudley


68 Pale Amber 4.0% A well balanced beer initially slightly sweet but with hops coming through on the finish. 69 Bramling Cross 4.6% Only available at this festival and the Beacon Hotel brewery tap in Sedgely. Never available before outside the Sarah Hughes pub. A single hopped golden fruity ale. Must try. 70 Sedgeley Surprise 5.0% Bitter sweet and medium bodied. Nice to have all 5 beers from Sarah Hughes for you to sample 71 Dark Ruby Mild 6.0% Regulars at this and other festivals will be aware of this wonderfully eccentric extremely drinkable 6% mild . Brewed in an open copper Victorian brewery. We actually sent a van all the way to Dudley to collect this. Has acquired an almost mythical status as its either never arrived or just run out. Dont worry we have several firkins put by. Enjoy. 72 Snowflake 8.0% Snowflake is the ultra rare seasonal ale from the Beacon Hotel in Sedgley. Has never been sold outside the homebrew pub except at this festival. Barley wine style with a hint of coconut. I used to say that the Ruby Mild was my favourite beer in the world but this runs it a close second.

73Amber Fireside Ale 4.5% Seasonal ale from Britains oldest brewer. Fruity aroma and full malty taste. 74 Double Stout 4.0% Made from a recently discovered brewers code book of an ancient recipe. Magnificent classic double stout. Velvety with roasted coffee and cocoa. Black and creamy.

75 Early Bird. 4.3% Refreshing golden ale with honey and freshly cut grassy aroma. 76 Bishops Finger 5.0% Originally supplied only in bottles in 1958. But for some time now the flagship cask strong ale from this Kentish brewing dynasty. Ruby coloured and mouth filling. Named after a signpost found on the Pilgrims Way. Also known locally as Nuns Delight or Ecclesiastical Digit.

Small Pauls Brewery, Gillingham, Dorset


77 Gillingham Pale 4.5% Started in 2006 this half barrel nano brewery (smaller than a micro) has been the talk of the festival circuit. Light golden colour made with pale malts. Very refreshing lighter style of beer. One to try if your fed up with the sledgehammer hoppy beers that most newer brewerys tend to insist on brewing.

Stocklinch Brewery, Somerset **NEW BREWERY**


78 Ramblers Gold 3.8% Golden, sweet with vanilla and caramel notes detected. Very interesting and new.

Strathhaven Brewery, Lanarkshire, Scotland


79 Avondale Amber 4.0% Distinctive session bitter, amber in colour as the name suggests but with a stunning floral aroma followed by bitter finish.

Tavy Brewery, Devon ***NEW BREWERY***


80 Ideal Pale Ale 4.8% Golden and citrusy but well balanced. First time available outside its local area.

Three Castles Brewery, Pewsey, Wiltshire


81 Spring Daze 4.1% Blonde beer with loads of juicy flavours releasing a vibrant aroma. Well worth a try. 82 Tanked Up 5.0% Copper coloured beer. The area around the brewery is noted for the army battleground where the Challenger tank is constantly on manoeuvres. Big beer that will go down the tubes with a bang.

Tintagel Brewery, Tintagel, Cornwall


83 Harbour Special 4.8% Dark amber to brown in colour. Very malty with dried fruit on the palate.

Titanic Brewery, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire


84 Black Ice 4.1% A black bitter using Cascade and Yakina hops. Black with a ruby hue but drinks like a traditional bitter. Titanic beers never fail to impress. This is one worth trying.

Topsham Ales, Topsham, Devon


85 Truckle Bed Alley 4.2% Started in 2010 as a co-operative. So not quite a new brewery but this the first time the beer has been sold outside its locale. Amber ale, light, dry palate, tangy hops, dry finish.

Twickenham Fine Ales Twickenham, London


86 Vanguard 4.1% Copper/amber beer made with English and German hops. 87 Spring Ale 4.4% Hoppy ale with sweetish edge. Golden coloured with big fresh citrus nose and taste. 88 Naked Ladies 4.4% Well hopped with First gold and Styrian. Extremely fine beer. Essential. Do try before it runs out. Deservedly popular. 89 Gothick Dark 4.6% Gothick Dark makes its first appearance here at Le Gothique where it would a regular if it were not for the fact that it is only rarely brewed by Twickenham. A strong flavoursome dark mild. Must try. 90 Honey Dark 4.8% Chocolate, coffee and honey. Full bodied dark and tasty.

Twisted Oak Brewery, North Somerset ***NEW BREWERY***


91 Fallen Tree 3.8% Amber coloured session beer. Clean and sharp tasting. Bitter and full of flavour. From a new brewery all opened in late 2012 and this is the first barrel to reach London. Must try.

Upham Brewery of Upham, Hampshire


92 Punter 4.0% Rich ochre in colour. Hints of syrup and toasted grains. Big dry finish.

Williams Brothers Kelliebank, Alloa, Clackmananshire


93 March of the Penguins Porter 4.9% A warm dark mahogany coloured bitter. Silky smooth with fruity/spicy mouthfeel. Definitely one to give a try.

Windsor and Eton Windsor, Berkshire


94 London Stout 6.8% The result of a collaboration between Paddy at Windsor & Eton the Kernel Brewery. A mega stout. Must try. 95 Kohinoor 4.5% The second Jubilee Ale from Windsor & Eton. Made using Jaggery sugar, Jasmine petals, coriander and cardamom from the Far East. A must try from a respected brewer.

Windy Brewery, Seavington, Somerset


96 Hurricane 4.2% New brewery opened in 2011. First time served in London. Blonde ale brewed with Maris Otter and Crystal hops. Then dry hopped with Cascade for refreshing finish.

WJ King Horsham West Sussex


97 Kings Old Ale 4.5% Big tasting Old Ale with silky smooth mouth feel of coffee and molasses This was our March 2012 Festival overall Champion Beer of Wandsworth. We welcome its return for you all to savour once again. Highly recommended.

Wolf Attleborough, Norfolk


98 Wolf Ale 3.9% Flagship brew from this tried and trusted brewer from Norfolk. Copper coloured with lots of bite! Locally grown malts combine with Challenger hops.

Wood Brewery, Craven Arms, Shropshire


99 Beauty 4.2% An amber brew to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the regions listing as an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A fruity malty beer. .
