This program description manual does not claim to address all of the safety
issues associated with the use of the mPDS 2000V3 and samples. It is the
responsibility of the user to establish health and safety practices and
determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Before using the mPDS 2000V3, read this program description manual
completely.

Anton Paar GmbH only warrants the proper functioning of the mPDS
2000V3 if no unauthorized adjustments have been made to mechanical
parts, electronic parts and software, and the following points are adhered to.

Follow all hints, warnings and instructions in the instruction manual to ensure
the correct and safe functioning of the mPDS 2000V3.

Do not use the mPDS 2000V3 for any purpose other than described in the

incorrect use of the mPDS 2000V3.

Do not use any accessories other than those supplied or approved by Anton
Paar GmbH.

The installation procedure should only be carried out by authorized

personnel who are familiar with the installation instructions.

Do not operate the mPDS 2000V3 if a malfunction is suspected, or

damages, injuries or loss of life cannot be excluded under all circumstances.

The mPDS 2000V3 is not an explosion-proof instrument and therefore must

not be operated in areas where there is a risk of explosion.

Service and/or maintenance procedures which involve removing outside

covers and working with the power switched on may only be performed by
authorized service personnel.

Ensure that all operators are fully trained to use the mPDS 2000V3 correctly
and safely.

Due to the nature of the measurement, the measuring results not only
depend on the correct use and functioning of the mPDS 2000V3, but may
also be influenced by other factors. We therefore recommend that the

5 Application Program Ext-Cell

5 Application Program Ext-Cell

[Config] [Appl-Prog] [Ext-Cell]
This application program determines density and/or concentration of a sample
filled into an external density cell (DMA 512P, DMA 602, DMA 401, DMA HPM).
For the DMA HPM, also the measuring temperature can be displayed.
It enables the automatic calculation of the adjustment constants DA and DB,
storage of 256 different sets of transducer constants and storage of 256 sets of
concentration formula coefficients.
It is replacing the EXTCLL21 application program of the mPDS 2000 V2.
Necessary equipment:

One external measuring cell (DMA 602, DMA 512P, DMA 401 or DMA HPM).

One interface for external cells (for DMA 602 and DMA 512 P)

mPDS 2000V3 evaluation unit

Miscellaneous programs group "D"

To check, which application software is stored on the mPDS 2000V3, press the
"" key. The version of the application program is shown on right side
(e.g. "D01.00")
Important:
The mPDS 2000V3 is a process evaluation unit and has to be installed into a
separate housing or switch board.

5.2

Product Selection

Different products can be selected via submenu (Prod-No) or an external product

selector switch. Valid product numbers are:
0 ... 255. The current product number is shown in the measuring window (E.G. "#
005").
During measurement of a particular product, the product number must be set to
the number (0 255) which has been chosen initially.

5.3

Adjustment of the External Density Cell

The external cell has to be operated at constant temperature and constant

pressure using an external thermostat.
To enable a density measurement the external cell has to be adjusted using two
different samples of known density (2 standards), usually air and distilled water
for temperatures between 0 and 80 C.
For the adjustment at higher temperatures, air and a liquid of precisely known
density at adjustment temperature has to be used. The boiling point has to be
considerably higher than the adjustment temperature. For temperatures up to
approximately 130 C, n-Nonane may be suitable, for temperatures up to 150 C
n-undecane may be useful.

16

A90IB16

5 Application Program Ext-Cell

Select a product number using menu [Prod-No]

The following equation is used to determine density from the period of oscillation
of the measuring cell:

= DA * P 2 DB
DA =

1 2
P12 P22

P22 * 1 P12 * 2
DB =
P12 P22

. unknown density of sample

1 . density of standard 1
2 . density of standard 2
P1 . period of oscillation, standard 1
P2 . period of oscillation, standard 2
P . period of oscillation, sample

Apparatus constants DA and DB have to be determined by measuring the periods

of 2 standards of known density at measuring temperature. DA and DB are only
valid for this temperature and pressure.
The program contains the feature for the automatic determination of constants DA
and DB for 256 different temperatures and pressures.
The program contains the feature for the automatic determination of constants DA
and DB for 256 different temperatures and pressures.
Strictly follow the steps below:
1. Select a product number 0 ... 255 via submenu [Prod-No]
2. Fill density standard1 of known density. If air is used as density standard 1
rinse and dry the cell properly.
3. Wait until the period of oscillation is absolutely stable. The second digit after
the comma should be constant. Note down the period in the adjustment
report (appendix).
4. Enter the density of standard 1 to product parameter [Density1] via submenu
[Prod-Spec] - [Parameter]. Note down the density of standard 1 into the
adjustment report (e.g. 1.204 E-3, density of air at 20 C. See also Chapter
5.7).
5. Set product parameter [Control] to "1" via submenu [Prod-Spec] [Parameter]. The program automatically stores the current period in product
[Period1] and sets [Control] to "2".
6. Fill the second standard of known density. For 20 C distilled water is
commonly used.
7. Wait until the period of oscillation is absolutely stable. The second digit after
the comma should be constant. Note down the period into the adjustment

A90IB16

17

5 Application Program Ext-Cell

report.
8. Enter the density of standard 2 to product parameter [Density2] via submenu
[Prod-Spec] - [Parameter]. Note down the density of standard 2 into the
adjustment report. (e.g. 9.98204E-1, density of water at 20 C. See also
chapter 5.7.)
9. Set product parameter [Control] to "3". The program automatically stores the
current period in product parameter [Period2] and sets parameter [Control]
back to "0". The program automatically calculates the new DA and DB
constants. The new values are stored as apparatus/transducer constants
'DA' and 'DB'. In addition product parameter [Const-A] is set to 'A' and
product parameter [Const-B] is set to "DB".
10. Now the mPDS 2000V3 reads the correct density at the temperature and
pressure used during the adjustment.
Important:
Do not change the product number as long as you measure at this
temperature and pressure. Otherwise you will get wrong density and
concentration results.
The adjustment must be carried out for each product number separately using
proper standards with known densities at measuring temperature and
pressure.

5.4

Concentration Calculation using Customer

Specific Polynomials

After having adjusted the external cell at a particular temperature you may enter
a concentration polynomial valid for a particular sample at this temperature.
The following polynomial is built-in:
concentr =

KA + KB * dd + KC * dd2 + KD * dd3 + KE * dd4 + KF * dd5+

KG * dd6 + KH * dd7
KA ... KH ....................... polynomial coefficients
concentr ........................ concentration in %
dd ... ......... density

The coefficients have to be stored by the user for each product separately:
Select the product number you have been using during the adjustment of the
external cell and enter the coefficients as follows via submenu [Prod-Spec] [Parameter]: [KA], [KB], [KH]

18

6 Control of Density (IBM-BFE)

[Config] [Appl-Prog] [IBM-BFE]
This application program is used to keep the density of a 2 component liquid
constant. Because during the process operation water evaporates, water will be
added automatically after the density overshoots a selectable target density.
The Anton Paar measuring system for the in-line monitoring of density consists of
the following components:

DPR or DPRn transducer

mPDS 2000V3 evaluation unit

Program group miscellaneous (EXTCLL, )

The IBM-BFE application program of the mPDS 2000V3 replaces the IBMBFE22
software of the mPDS 2000 V2.

Hints for Putting into Operation

Important:
All the procedures listed in this section should only be carried out by
authorized personnel!

Putting the instrument into operation is explained in the mPDS 2000V3 Instruction
manual. Additional functions for the application program are explained below.
Special wiring and scaling of inputs and outputs
DO1

This digital output is 'high' during the closing time if the

measured density at reference density is greater than the
target density at reference temperature + Dead-zone

DO2

This digital output is high if the density at reference

temperature exceeds the target density +/- Tolerance.

The regular alarm function using the 2 relays of the mPDS 2000V3 can still be
used for additional purposes.

Dead-zone

Zone for no control (default: 2e-5 g/cm)

Cycle

(default: 2 minutes)

Target-D

Target density at reference temperature

(default: 1.04998 g/cm)
The display value 'Target' is set equal to application
parameter Target-D.

Tolerance

Allowed density tolerance from target density before

activating the alarm output DO2.(default: 1e-4 g/cm).

Ref-temp

Reference
temperature
for
the
temperature
compensation formula (default: 27 C):
CompDens = Density + K1*(Temp - Ref-temp) +
K2*(Temp - Ref-temp) + K3*(Temp - Ref-temp)

K1

K1 linear coefficient for temperature compensation of

density. (default: 3.4971e-4)

K2

K2 quadratic coefficient for temperature compensation

of density. (default: 2.2847e-6)

K3

K3 cubic coefficient for temperature compensation of

density. (default: 0)

Control function
The program calculates the CloseTime using the density at reference
temperature at the beginning of the control cycle. If this density at reference
temperature is greater then the target density, digital output 1 (DO1) is high for a
certain time thus controlling the adding of water.
The CloseTime is calculated in the following way:
CloseTime = abs [P * ( TARG - DCOMP)] = abs [P * DEV.]
P
TARG
DCOMP
DEV.

30

application parameter P-factor

application parameter Target
CompDens = current density at reference temperature
Last deviation between target and current density at reference

A90IB16

6 Control of Density (IBM-BFE)

Important:
CloseTime is calculated at the beginning of each control cycle.
If CloseTime is greater than the cycle time CloseTime is set to the cycle
time.
If the deviation between target and last density at reference temperature
is smaller than the application parameter Dead-zone then the control
output is low and CloseTime is set to "0".
The digital output 1 (control) is only closed if the current density at
reference density is greater than the target density at reference density.

EXAMPLE: (using default values)

Control Cycle time

20

Current CompDens

1.05005 g/cm

Target

1.04998 g/cm

P-factor

120000

CloseTime is calculated as follows:

CloseTime = abs [120000 * (1.04998 - 1.05005)] = 8 seconds
The digital output 1 (control) is "high" for 8 seconds within the control cycle time.
After 20 seconds CloseTime is calculated once again.

Hint:
The mPDS 2000 set the digital output 1 (control) to "high" for
CloseTime +/- 1 seconds. There is an uncertainty of about 1 second.
The shorter the cycle time the greater the relative influence of this uncertainty.

Alarm function
The application program uses the digital output 2 (DO2) as a special alarm output.
The alarm limits are derived from the following application parameters:
Lower limit = Target - Tolerance
Upper limit = Target + Tolerance
If one of the limits is exceeded the digital output 2 gets "high".
Otherwise this output is "low".

7 Application Program Milk-Fat

[Config] [Appl-Prog] [Milk-Fat]
This application program determines several concentration values of milk using
application/product-specific polynomials. The customer is able to enter the
coefficients of the polynomials.
Necessary equipment:

DSRn transducer or SPRn/SPR Transducer+DTR transmitter

mPDS 2000V3 evaluation unit

Miscellaneous programs group "D"

To check, which application software is stored on the mPDS 2000V3, press
the "" key. The version of the application program is shown on right side
(e.g. "D05.00")

Measuring ranges:
Concentration: Depends on the validity of the used polynomials
Important:
The software does not check the plausibility of the concentration values. If the
calculated concentration is below 0 it is set to '0' and a warning message is
displayed.

Temperature

Product Selection

Different products can be selected via the submenu [Prod-No] or an external

signal from PLC or via a product selector switch. Valid product numbers are:
0 ... 255. The current product number is shown in the measuring window
(e.g. "# 005").
During measurement of a particular product, the product number must be set to
the number (0 255) which was set when it was adjusted initially.

7.3

Adjustment of the 3 Concentrations using

Offsets

The 3 concentrations (Fat, Solids, Fat-2) can be adjusted using constant offsets.
1. Assign a product number (1...255) to the product flowing through the transducer and select this product number in the of submenu
[Prod-No].
2. Compare the displayed concentrations (Fat/Solids/Fat-2) with the results of
several samples analysed in the laboratory. Calculate the mean deviation.
3. Correct the mean deviation. To achieve the best accuracy, it is important not
to correct the reading after each comparison with the laboratory.
4. In submenu [Prod-Spec] [Parameter] select the parameter
[Fat-off] / [Solid-off]/[Fat-2-off]. Add the calculated deviation to the displayed
value of the parameter [Fat-off] / [Solid-off]/[Fat-2-off] and enter the new
offset.
