Students and Teachers Gather to Discuss Social Cliques

Diamond Bar High School held DB Forum for the fifth time on Monday, October 20, at the South Coast Air Quality Management District. This years theme was About Face, which focused on stereotypes. The DB Forum is a non-profit event funded by the Brahma Foundation. Its purpose is to expose students to the different labels placed on them around campus. At the event, facilitators led groups of students through various activities and discussions. I felt that every single group connected either one way or another, said senior Valerie Lopez, one of the forums facilitators. Led by Peer Counseling advisor Sandra Davis, students from DBHS and peer counselors from Walnut High School took part in discussions and activities concerning the discrimination present in their schools. I want students to leave [DB Forum] feeling that they are more aware of the stereotypes on campus and realize that we have a lot more in common than we have differences, stated Davis. The DB Forum was formed a year ago by Davis in hopes of making DBHS a better campus. Unlike previous DB Forums, both DBHS and WHS peer counselors worked and participated together in the event. Approximately 105 students and 20 adults attended this years forum. I was really surprised to see how many people were struggling through such hard problems, commented senior Alice Chen, about the discussions that went on during the event. DB Forum is held two to three times a year. Attendees include students who have been recommended by their teachers or grade level coordinators, or students who sign up by filling out an application. Whales Added to Endangered Species List With Much Opposition

The populations of beluga whales and polar bears have declined severely due to global warming. Adding these species to the endangered species list will affect Alaskas economy. Genesis Keller Asst. News Editor On Friday, October 17, the Bush Administration decided to protect beluga whales under the Endangered Species Act, despite the many opponents they faced, including vice presidential candidate, Sarah Palin. The government has ensured that a small, isolated population of beluga whales in the Cook Inlet near Anchorage, Alaska will be protected. During the 1990s, the beluga whale population declined by 50 percent; consequently, a 10year program was introduced by the National Marine Fisheries Service to stabalize whale population. The program failed, and according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the whale population has not stabilized. Palin claimed that adding the whales to the endangered species list would harm the economy of the Cook Inlet area since off-shore drilling would be banned. Palin strongly opposed this move and argued that there is not enough scientific evidence to back up the governments claims. She said, Weve actually seen the beginnings of an increase in [the whale] population. A 50 percent decrease in the beluga whale population occurred in the Cook Inlet between 1994 and 1998. In 1995, the whale population consisted of 635 whales. That number decreased to 375 by 2007. The decision to add the whales to the list was delayed [Please see ANIMAL on page 3]

A club called Project Fusion was established by the peer counselors to reach out to students and help them with any problems they face in school. The club was created by Davis after a suggestion by a student at one of last years DB Forums. Davis and Emily Clark, a history teacher at DBHS, are advisors for the club. Davis hopes that future forums will bring the same success that the previous DB Forums have brought. DB Forum was one of the most remarkable experiences that I have had the pleasure in participating in. It was eyeopening and I would definitely go again, remarked senior Mina Mohammadi. The next DB Forum will be held on Monday, February 23. [Please see TALK on page 3]

Sycamore Canyon Park Vandalized

Elizabeth Lee Staff Writer

DAMAGE: The most severe case of vandalism in Diamond Bar within the last several years recently occurred at a local park. The cost to repair the damage will amount to almost $9,000.

The Walnut/Diamond Bar Sheriffs Department currently has two juveniles and one adult in custody for the vandalism that occurred in Sycamore Canyon Park some time between Friday, August 29, and Friday, September 5. The defacements were reported to officials on September 5, and Detective Mark Gittens was assigned the case. The vandalism included the wreckage of the railing of a deck, the dumping of the destroyed railing into the nearby creek, and the uprooting of a trash receptacle. The first person that was contacted regarding the incident was the citys Parks and Maintenance Superintendent, Anthony Jordan. Science Club Visits Aquarium of the Pacific

EXHIBIT: Science club members had the opportunity to listen to a man dressed in a black, ghostlike costume read stories in the Marine Life Theaters Spooky Storytelling Show. Pamela Lewes Contributing Staff Writer The Science Club went on a field trip to the Aquarium of the Pacific on Saturday, October 25, from 12:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. On the first floor of the aquarium, students saw tropical fish in the Tropical Pacific Gallery. Students also saw sea lions, seals, and jellyfish swimming in their natural environments. I liked the moray eel, seahorses, and exotic fishes, stated junior Jessica Kim. [The aquarium] had the biggest abalone and spiny lobsters. Outside, students touched different types of sharks and stingrays. They watched the sharks feed, as trainers tossed shrimp into the water. Many dangerous sharks were on display in enclosed tanks, through which students could view the sharks. In the Lorikeet Forest exhibit, visitors were allowed to travel inside of the habitat of various tropical birds. On the second floor, there was a Sea Lion and Seal Show. There, students were able to watch sea lions and seals do tricks such as jumping out of the water and waving a flipper at the audience. Also located on the second floor was the shore

bird sanctuary in which visitors were able to view different types of ducks. Forty-two students attended the trip, but all Diamond Bar High School students were welcome to attend. The admission cost for club members was $16, while non-members paid $19. The trip was planned about two months ago by Biology teacher Eric Sorenson, the Science Club advisor. We go on four or five trips a year. They are well attended and fun, commented Sorenson. A trip to the aquarium was in the making for a long while in the science club, and the experience was just as wonderful as we members thought it would be, commented junior Emily Miller, president of the Science Club.

In Diamond Bar, a city where the majority of the population is relatively untroubled by things such as violence or nancial issues, students are becoming increasingly convinced that by attending a prestigious university, they will be successful in the future. For most students, being accepted into a good school means having a high grade point average and participating in extracurricular activities in a more than I can handle fashion. Although there are many different types of activities on and off campus, there is only one activity that is considered to be mandatory: volunteering. Paradoxically, volunteering has now become involuntary. Nowadays, volunteering can be seen as a key component of college applications. Students and parents alike are constantly being told that volunteering is absolutely necessary when dealing with academic success. As a result, the word, volunteer has completely lost its true meaning and importance in todays society. If one were to ask any student volunteer today why they help the poor, clean up

parks, or tutor other students, the volunteer would probably say, I volunteer because I love helping my community! While this may or may not be true, what the volunteer has failed to mention is that their main reason for volunteering is the number of hours they can put on their college applications. After the volunteers precious reward is received, the true concept of volunteering will become completely foreign to them. The student volunteer is volunteering for all of the wrong reasons. Adolescents are breaching their integrity and ethical values because high schools deem it okay to volunteer just for the sake of having the right to write down I volunteer. Teaching students these values will only create generations of adults that lack the pure spirit of altruism. Students who volunteer may seem like students who are seless, but in reality, many of them are not. As long as volunteering is considered to be a key factor when it comes to being accepted by a college or university, students will continue to volunteer not to help others but to help themselves.

You Should Bank on it

Katie Lee Editorial Cartoonist Banks depend on your money and your faith. Recent risky loan practices and the resultant housing crisis have undermined not only the U.S. banking system but the economy as a whole. Washington Mutual and a dozen other banks have failed because they have not been able to meet their nancial obligations. Terried of losing their money, depositors have tried to pull out their funds. If left unchecked, such a dearth of faith and withdrawal of money from banks will render the banks unable to sustain themselves. In the case of such widespread failure, the economy will continue its downward spiral, subsequently hurting all sectors. This scenario directly pits what is benecial for the individual against the greater good of society. The government has counterbalanced peoples irrational fears by providing insurance against loss of deposits and by repeatedly highlighting this point to the panicked populace. Now that they have done so, people need to listen, do their part, and stop panicking Banks maintain liquid assets, immediately available money, as a small percentage of their total assets. If all depositors demanded, without notice, to pull out their money at once, no bank would be able to survive because their operating capitol would not be able to cover the demand for cash. People should not withdraw money in a panic because it will harm the national economy. The sense of security they

The sense of security customers get by pulling out money is an illusion since an economy in a severe recession would harm everyone.
get by pulling out money is an illusion since an economy in a severe recession would harm everyone. This individual peace of mind comes at a huge collective cost because security is sought where there is no danger of loss in the rst place, while nancial peril to everyone is a certainty if such a scenario were to proliferate. To ensure

against such an occurrence, mandatory legislation was put in place decades ago to protect the individual, the U.S. economy, and the global economy. Because the banks are protected, the economy is also protected. During the Great Depression, bank depositors were quick to withdraw their money, leading the country into an economic collapse. Since then, the Federal Government has created a Federal Depositors Insurance Corporation (FDIC) which now protects bank deposits to the amount of $250,000; therefore, individual loss is protected. Hence, the depositors fears of losing all of their deposited money is irrational. The panic is based on the innate selsh nature of people that prevails; however, this fear must be contained to prevent the economic recession from turning into a national crisis. Individual restraint would benet all depositors. The recent bank bailout is another instance of panic and self-interest as an obstacle to economic stability. The initial bailout plan for $700 billion

was met with hostility by a population that claimed that the government should not add to the federal decit by recklessly throwing out their taxpayers dollars. Of course, the stock market crashed immediately after the bill failed to pass and only rose in the days after a harried Congress nally did vote to pass it. Although it is common belief that any amount of decit is harmful, this is an economic fallacy. It is the governments duty to pump money into an ailing economy. After the economy recovers, the decit should be replenished. Contrary to popular beliefs, it is sound policy to borrow money and run a temporary decit to mitigate a crisis. Without swift government intervention, the problem would be aggravated. While the government is not free from blame for our economic woes, it is wrong to point the nger solely at them. If the government is a reection of our society and if the society is an amalgam of people and their ideas, then perhaps the governments irrational nancial policies come from peoples irrational instincts. We all have to take individual and collective responsibility to protect our economy.

I am a harsh critic of John McCain, but as he already gets ridiculed by the liberal media, I will dare to take on Obamas cult. I know that to do so is to commit heresy against the Church of the Savior Obama, but what he has spoken of is a utopian society, which even realized, would only be utopian to him and his disciples. He says universal healthcare is noble, but does not speak of its quality to individual buyers. He wants less tax burden on the middle class, but who would pay for a bail-out, poverty initiative for other nations, or free healthcare then? If only money grew on trees. He says the business taxes are too low and only benet the upper class, but my parents own and manage a business and struggle to make six gures together. Jump off a cliff in the name of Obama if you so desire, but I will abstain from this pleasure. Andrew Luk John McCain would not be my rst choice in the 2008 Presidential Election but he is undoubtedly more qualied than Barack Obama. McCain has been in the Senate for nearly twentythree years while Obama has only been in the Senate for two. Many argue that McCain is too old, but throughout his seventy-four years, McCain has been through war and economic depression. He knows the dangers that we are facing in Iraq and would not keep our soldiers there unless it was absolutely necessary. With Obamas short term in public ofce, it is hard to believe that Obama even understands half the things that he promises to do. Instead of coming out with anything that will get him elected, McCain realistically claries his effective plans. Ruby Hwang Wouldnt it be nice if we could make our perfect candidates? Unfortunately, we do not have Build-a-Candidate Workshops where we can pick and choose the various qualities of our ideal choice, and in presidential elections, we are forced to settle on one nominee. In this upcoming election, I feel no strong afnity towards any one candidate. Both have policies which I disagree with, but then again, I suppose the only person who would satisfy my criteria would be myself; but because every American cannot run for presidency, I and almost every other American will have to compromise our numerous and varying ideas into a single person. So if I could vote, I would choose Barack Obama, but you will not see me at any Obama rallies or wearing any Change We Can Believe In t-shirts. Adeel Mohammadi

That Poor, Poor Kid...
Adeel Mohammadi Asst. Editorial Editor In the wake of a horrifying attack on zoo animals by a seven-year-old boy in Alice Springs, Australia earlier this month, the issue of holding children accountable for their own actions has been brought into question. Throughout the world, laws are written so that young minors are not liable for their actions. Many believe that letting children go without proper punishment will leave the youngest members of society without a sense of accountability, leading to a dangerous and amoral generation of future adults. However, regardless of the situation, parents should be responsible for the actions of their young children. Instead of heading to school on a Wednesday morning, the Australian boy (whose name has not been released for legal reasons) decided to sneak into a reptile zoo, where he killed various lizards by pounding them with rocks, and fed multiple lizards to a crocodile. All in all, 13 rare lizards were killed, damage that amounts to over ve thousand dollars. Since local laws dictate that children under the age of ten cannot zoo? In fact, the boys parents should have been watching over the youngster. Parents have the obligation to teach their children morals; obviously, the parents of the Australian boy did not do a sufcient job; in scenes from video recordings of the gruesome incident, the boy is seen to be smiling. It is incumbent upon parents to teach their children, and laws should hold them accountable for their childrens rampages. Otherwise, victims are forced to run after parents and try to sue, hoping that the judicial process reimburses them for their damages like the zoo is trying to do. While we think of children as sweet and innately lovable, if parents do a poor job of raising them, they can grow up to be reckless adults. The responsibility of their actions and upbringing, rests solely upon their parents shoulders, and if childrenregardless of agemisbehave, parents should be held liable.

Pro: Proposition 8
Elizabeth Lee Staff Writer Marriage has always been known as a covenant between a man and a woman. However, since the issue of legalizing gay marriage has been brought up in numerous other states, Californias denition of marriage has blurred. Supporting Proposition 8, which amends the California constitution to only recognize marriage between a man and a woman, will preserve what marriage has always meant and protect the peoples voice. Voting no on Proposition 8 is unjust and unwarranted. If Proposition 8 is not passed, homosexuality will be exposed to children without the approval of parents. The Parker familys story in Lexington, Massachusetts is a perfect example of the rejection of parental rights that the legalization of same-sex marriage entails. David Parker requested to be informed when his children would be exposed to informational material regarding homosexuality but was turned down. He was then arrested after refusing to leave a meeting between the principal and the towns Director of Education

regarding the homosexual material taught in Estabrook Elementary School. If Proposition 8 does not pass, it would become mandatory for homosexuality to be taught in public schools as a normal concept. Homosexuality should not be perceived as natural. This material will negatively influence children, especially those who are too young to fully understand sexuality. On May 15 of this year, a California Supreme Court ruling of 4-3 legalized gay marriage. This did not reect the views of California citizens because 61.4% of voters were against same sex marriage. The court had no right to overstep boundaries and make same-sex marriage legal despite the majority vote. This arbitrary decision of the court was a clear insult to the democratic institution and should not even be humored with another statewide election. The state Supreme Court acted unjustly by brushing aside the

voice of the people and legalizing something that citizens clearly did not support. Voting no on Proposition 8 will only encourage the Supreme Court to continue ignoring the peoples will. Many believe that Proposition 8will encourage prejudice against homosexual couples. That is not the case. Earlier this month, F a t h e r Geoffrey Farrow of F r e s n o announced t o h i s congregation his views on Proposition 8 after he confessed that he was gay in a television interview prior to Mass. Farrow was later removed from his position because he used the power and authority that came with his occupation to advertise his own opinions. He opposes Proposition 8 because he believes that it would strip lesbian and gay partners of their citizen rights. The proposition however is merely a clarication of a legal definition and legal interest of the state. It is not

meant to discriminate, ridicule, or infringe on the moral rights of homosexual couples. The traditional and practical reason why Proposition 8 should be supported is the physical make up of a male and a female. Sex between partners of the opposite gender is the only natural way to produce offspring. One of the main purposes of marriage is to create a secure family unit for the procreation of children. Homosexual partners cannot satisfy this fundamental tenet of marriage and therefore, should not legally be entitled to marry. Proposition 8 is meant to overrule the state Supreme Courts unfair decision by amending the state constitution. This proposition needs a simple majority vote to pass. If passed, the sentence: Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California, will be amended to the states constitution. Those who oppose Proposition 8 disrespect the democratic process and will create an uncertain future for California residents. Rather than leading California into lapsed morality and injustice, voters must vote yes on Proposition 8.

San Diego, Los Angeles Applicant: McTella, Lyam Non-weighted GPA: 4.1 Projected Major: Political Science Essay Prompt #1(excerpt): The world around me has been integral in shaping my beliefs and has especially fueled my desire to excel and thrive in a competitive environment. When I was in that car accident in 1996 and lost my arm trying to save my baby sister from the savage jaws of the metal around us I learned that...When I lost my mother last year in an armed robbery, I realized that only I have the drive to make serious political change in this nation. Change we can believe in. Lyam McTella, a laidback senior with a tragic past, agreed to sit down for an interview where he was asked about the application process and his beliefs on the alleged dishonesty pervading application contents. McTella : For me, the application process has been relatively simple. Its almost like writing a storyan autobiography, of course. I just have to sit back and let everything come to me. All my achievements, and everything thats happened to me over the years. My arm? Ohwell you see this arm here is a clever prosthesis covered by makeup to resemble an actual esh arm. Yes, I just want to be a normal kid. As for the dishonesty thing, I dont feel that thats much of a problem. Students know the consequences and we avoid that kind of behavior. Unfortunately, the interview with McTella had to be cut short as he claimed his mother was in the parking lot, waiting to pick him up. But we can glean from his words that college applications are an accurate reection of the applicant. Have no fear, underclassmen; the time will come when you too can enjoy the pleasures of senior year and write your own stories (autobiographies, of course). Until then, seniors have all the luck in the world.

Con: Proposition 8
Sharon Lin Asst. Editorial Editor To put it simply, Proposition 8 is nothing more than an underhanded attempt at gaining legal permission to discriminate against homosexuals. It eliminates legalization of samesex marriages in California despite the fact that same-sex marriages have been legalized by the state Supreme Court in a 4-3 vote just this May. Proposition 8 will in no way protect marriage as its supporters claimit will create a divided society in which freedom is unequally given to citizens. Proposition 8 supporters claim that a marriage is not legitimate unless it is between a man and a woman because procreation will not happen otherwise. This denition is an insult to marriage itself because marriage is not for the sole purpose of procreation and if it was, any couple unable to conceive a child would be prohibited to marry. As this is clearly not the case, it is valid to say that marriage can exist without the production of a child. An inability to reproduce without the help of a third person does not change the meaning of marriage at all, but Proposition 8 does. It places restrictions on marriage and stresses it as a religious ceremony instead of a ceremony between two people who are fully committed to each other. Many supporters are worried about the fact that their children will be taught that homosexuality is normal if Proposition 8 is not passed. Though children will be taught that homosexuality is just as normal as heterosexuality in school, this is not a subject of concern. Homosexuality is not contagious and will not negatively affect their children. These biased views are a result of a lack of knowledge about homosexuality and its social implications. The increased availability of information regarding homosexuality will help eliminate prejudiced views early on and result in a more tolerant attitude. Any worries are unfounded; embracing the reality of same-sex marriages will not cause any negative influence to society. Unfair treatment of homosexuals has been happening for too long. Giving them the right to marry will put them at an equal level with all other citizens, a right that has long been overdue. Though it may seem to be a religious ceremony to some, marriage is open to those of all beliefs. Marriage is not a right that belongs to a certain religious group or a certain group of citizens who have the ability to produce offspring. It is a right that should be open to all citizens, and Proposition 8 takes that right away. In fact, on October 5, Father Geoffrey Farrow admitted to his Roman Catholic attendants in Fresno that he is homosexual. He expressed his opposition to Proposition 8 by claiming that it will limit the rights of homosexuals. After making his remark, he was ordered to stay away from all church communities that he had worked with, and lost both his salary and benefits. Considering his 23 years of dedicated work as a priest, Farrow was brushed away rather quickly without a second thought. The rash decision made on behalf of the St. Paul Newman Center is clear evidence of the unfair treatment against homosexuals. There is a line that separates marriage from religion, but in the eyes of Proposition 8 supporters, the two have somehow become intertwined to the point where religious members cannot express their personal views for fear that they will contradict the church. Farrow knew the consequences that awaited him, but chose to speak out despite potential criticism. Marriage between a man and a woman is undeniably traditional, but that is not to say that traditions must remain unchanged forever. There comes a time when change is needed so that society can grow and develop. Same-sex marriages will not harm society and changes need to be made to comply with modern civilization. This societal advancement can only take place by voting NO on Proposition 8.

BATTLE ROYALE:
In the news, all we seem to hear about is what our presidential candidates plan to do about the economic crisis: the continual drops and sudden jumps in the stock market, millions of retirees losing their retirement funds, the housing market plummeting. But have you ever thought to yourself: How do any of these things factor into my life? Well lets face it, they dont. As high school students, we dont care about the stock market because we dont invest, we dont care about retirement because thats farther off than college, and we dont care about the housing market because we dont own homes. So what do we care about? Education. Thats probably rst and foremost on our list of concerns. How, if at all, do Barack Obama and John McCain plan to improve our educational opportunities? Obama intends to institute the American Opportunity Tax Credit. This would make tuition to community colleges free to all Americans, and cover nearly two-thirds of the cost of tuition to universities. McCain plans to x the current student lending programs through a proposed expansion of the lender-of-last resort capability of the federal student loan system. In basic terms, this means an expansion of a program aimed at helping students acquire loans despite their lack of strong credit. McCain also plans to simplify the higher education tax benets to allow a greater number of families to apply for the benets and to lesson their nancial burden. Both candidates agree on the idea of simplifying the federal nancial aid application. Obama has put forth a plan to enable families to apply for nancial aid by simply checking a box on their tax forms. The environment is another area which many students would not consider a big factor in their lives. However, if we take the time to consider, despite how lame it may sound, we are the future. We are the ones who live in the environment being shaped by the policies of today. McCain supports a program of increased domestic exploration for oil and natural gas, as well as the construction of 45 new, nuclear power plants by 2050. The main priority of the Republican campaign is to eliminate the nations dependence on foreign oil. Obamas environmental plan focuses on reducing carbon and greenhouse gas emissions and developing clean energy approaches. He plans to invest $150 billion into clean energy programs over a 10 year period; he also plans to improve energy efciency by 50% by 2030. It is true and very unfortunate that many, actually the majority, of the issues addressed by the media do not currently affect us. This may be because a large number of us do not vote. Therefore, we currently have no power to sway the election. Regardless of how unfair this fact may be, we need to understand the issues, because one day we will, or at least should, vote.

Obama vs. Mccain

Erin Duff Contributing Staff Writer Eunice Lee Asst. Photo Editor If you expect to read about me telling you how wonderful my high school years were and the valuable things I have gained that will help me succeed in the future, please ip the page and read a rather fun article about a new movie or street art. Right now, Im suffering from a state of sleep deprivation as I complete yet another night of applications; Senior proles and a variety of other forms for applying to private colleges are killing me just like they are everyone else. Starbucks has become my second home, where I stare at essay prompts for hours and stress over thoughts of college with my friends while drinking one venti caramel macchiato after another. Who said senior year would be a breeze? It seems to me that these past few weeks have been more stressful than my junior year: however, knowing that Im almost done gives me a relaxing feeling though. Anyways, I dont want to write generic comments, saying how fast the last three years went by and how Im going to miss high school. Those statements are redundant and boring; rather, I want to talk about the few important things I have realized as a DBHS student. Believe it or not, stressing does nothing but arouse more stress, although I know the word stress is part of DBHS students lives because of the rigorous honors and AP classes. Its better to simply take a deep breath, make a list of what you need to do, start completing tasks one by one, and cross out each task as you go. Sometimes you just need to take a break even if you have three quizzes, two tests, and an essay due the next day. Forget about school and actually spend a few hours doing things you love to do even if its just sleeping or watching a short movie. After relaxing, I can guarantee that you will take less time to nish the tasks than if you were to do them without taking any breaks. But above all, the most important thing to remember is that you should enjoy every part of school; although it may seem like the least likeable place. With overwhelming loads of homework and one test after another, high school really is the biggest part of your teenage life. Whether you want it or not, school is mandatory. What is taught will shape your minds; the best thing you can do is to make the most out of everything. Your effort will always bring the best results even if it may take some for the benets to come to you. What Im trying to say is, relax and enjoy. School isnt that bad once you stop stressing over every detail. Always remember that you will miss your high school years later (although Im just mentioning it) and it is important for you to make the right decisions and not waste any part of your time doing something you will regret. Lean back and take a twominute break. Actually, I should stop stressing over college essays and nish my Statistics homework and watch a Prison Break episode. Before I run off to do all those tasks, let me just say this: Carpe diem! guys.

Pauline Phan Asst. Feature Editor Im only sixteen, but not too young to leave France and experience a different culture, and improve my English, shared junior Marion Buso. What seemed to be merely a dream for this French teenager became a reality when she arrived in the United States two months ago after planning for this tenmonth trip a year in advance. I had the pleasure of interviewing this mademoiselle and although there was a bit of a language barrier, Buso was amiable and surprised me with many facts about her life in France. Buso shared the fact that she is very grateful to her host family, French teacher Anthony Tietzs family, and the new friends she has made because they have helped make transitioning easier. DBHS is so different from my old school, said Buso, who also gushed about the football games and student activities at DBHS. She reected, We didnt have any of that in France. It was just go to school, take tests, study, and do homework. Actually, Busos old high school, which students attend for three years, requires students to select a major (Economics, Science, or Literature) during their second year. She explained that in France, her schools curriculum was more difcult than the one at DBHS because there was more emphasis on writing, less quizzes were given, and each student had to take eight or nine classes per semester. In addition, her school day in France lasted for more than eight hours! However, the students had a one or two hour lunch break where they could leave the campus and come back before their next class began. Though her school in France is very different from DBHS, she said that everything else is quite similar. Being a teen is the same in France or in America, expressed Buso. When I asked her what French teenagers liked to watch on TV, she immediately replied, One Tree Hill. Who knew that the surreal lives portrayed on these dramatic American teen dramas actually appeal to French people? To add to my shock, I discovered that Buso prefers to watch Asian dramas, such as the famous Korean drama, My Girl, on Youtube with French subtitles. Taken aback by her comment, I then asked her what she thought about the large Asian population at DBHS. Buso shared that she didnt expect there to be so many different ethnicities at DBHS, and appreciates that she is not only able to learn more about American culture, but also has the opportunity to be exposed to other cultures as well. Buso is very excited that in the small amount of time she has been in the States, her English has improved signicantly. Although she misses her family and friends a lot, Buso said she knows that this experience will be life-changing and worthwhile in the end. With a friendly smile on her face, she told me that she anticipates what is yet to come in the remaining eight months of her stay in America.

Fro my own good DARE?

Do you
Jennifer Shin News Editor Andrew John Asst. Sports Editor Never a bad hair day...Andrew John gives Zoolander a run for his money. James An Oh my gosh. I love your hair! If I had a dollar for every single time someone said that to me, I would be lthy rich. Along with the occasional, Can I touch it? I basically get the former comment on a daily basis. It no longer comes as a surprise to me. I mean, it is not everyday you see an Asian with an afro; that is, of course, unless you know me. The two most common things that people want to know about me concerning my hair are whether my hair is real and whether I am an ethnic mix. They always ask, Are you half-black? or, Is that a wig? Responding to these questions comes without much thought nowadays. Everyone is always in disbelief at rst when I explain that my hair is completely natural, without any perms or dyes, and that I am of full Korean descent. Even though I have explained these things countless times, talking about my hair never seems to get dull; maybe the warm feeling I get knowing that people are fascinated with my hair overcomes the trite repetition of hairrelated questions. Its always amusing to get comments about my hair, especially when the comments come from people I dont know. There is one instance of this that especially stands out: two workers loading shelves in a grocery store kept staring at me while I walked past them. It was pretty funny. They stopped what they were doing, and their heads slowly followed my progression down the aisle, keeping their eyes xated on me. Sure it was a little weird, but I thought the expressions on their faces were priceless. Whether I am at the market or the mall, random people all around me are captivated by my fro. People always say that looks arent everything, but looks still count for something. A persons sense of fashion and a persons hairstyle can say a lot about that persons personality. In my case, my hair does a lot of that talking. It sets me apart from the regular crowd and says that I dont always go with the ow. My fro is a huge part of my identity. People who dont know me personally, know of me. If a random person was asked if he knew who Andrew John was, he would most likely say that he did not know him. However, if that same person was asked if he knew the Asian guy with the fro, chances are that he would know. Im planning to donate my hair soon so that someone less fortunate than me can experience the same pleasures that I have had with my hair. Sure, I may be cutting off part of my identity, but itll grow back. But until that time comes, Im ne being the Asian guy with the fro. We have all heard of Bloody Mary, but what many of us have not heard is that Miss Say My Name Three Times and I Appear in Your Mirror is not the only haunting dare around. Here are some dares that just might make you wish you had sat in your seat waiting for the bell to ring instead of picking up this very newspaper that is in your soon-to-tremble ngertips. Similar to the overrated story of Bloody Mary is a myth about the symbol of evil himself, the Devil, also known as Lucifer. It is said that if you wake up from a good nights sleep without opening your eyes, walk down a stairway backwards, open your eyes while facing the nearest mirror and say the name Lucifer, the master of all that is unholy and wicked just may appear. On Halloween night, at exactly 6:06:06 p.m., knock on a strangers door thirteen times. When the stranger answers, ask to use his or her restroom. In the restroom, turn off all of the lights. Close your eyes and recite blood, blood, appear red blood thirteen times. With the lights still turned off, turn on the sink and wet your hands. Write blood on the mirror with your ngers and turn on the lights. You just might see blood everywhere. At midnight, go to an empty park with one of your closest friends. Go to the swing set and ask your friend to push you while you are swinging back and forth. While your friend is pushing you, imagine that your friend is being snatched away by a demented young girl in a white dress, with long, black hair streaming over her pale skin. Imagine that the girl is now pushing you. Turn around and see who your new best friend is. James An Asst. Photo Editor The last three years at Diamond Bar High School have been the best experience of my life. All the teachers are fully dedicated and excited to teach. All the students are trustworthy and hardworking. DBHS is the best place to learn; classrooms are quiet, computers are upto-date, and the campus is so clean. I look forward to school everyday, and I cannot believe that I am already a senior. DBHS is full of school pride and I am proud to be a Brahma... not. In reality, high school has been the longest three years of my life. It had its short, great moments, but that was it. For me, high school has been nothing but a lack of motivation. Yet parents, teachers and school administration make DBHS seem like it is the best high school in the world, lled with happy, innocent students taking part in a rigorous academic curriculum. DBHS has crowded hallways, bad food, stairs, more stairs, tardy sweeps, cheating, more cheating, even more cheating, drugs, and last, but denitely not least, the great, privileged United Student Body. Talk about equality among the students, USB. Oh yeah, you cant. Of course, there are some teachers who are fully dedicated and some students who are trustworthy, but they are just a minority at DBHS. And I guess USB isnt that bad No more complaining, I promise. After living in Diamond Bar for the past twelve years, I looked forward to college as my only way out. I am seriously ready to move out and go to college, yet I still have my senior year to go through. One more year! Taking AP Chemistry was actually not a big mistake, but taking physics at Fullerton College was. Honestly, I do not understand a single thing that the professor talks about. Why do I even go to class? Otherwise, school work has been fairly easy this year. For once, I stopped myself from procrastinating and nished most of my college apps early. Maybe I am that anxious to get out of high school. But then again, looking toward the future, I do not think it looks so bright. With the economy going down the drain, the war continuing, America losing power, and China gaining power, who knows? Who knows if Obama will actually bring change? Now it is time for some reminiscing. I miss everything from my childhood. The yo-yos, Crazy Bones, Pokemon cards, Yu-gi-Oh cards, razor scooters, nger skateboards, rolling backpacks, Heelies, eld trips, and even school kept me happy. I want to relive those days when I was carefree and completely oblivious. LIVING DEAD
Desiree Wang Asst. Feature Editor My clothes smell like weed. And no, I dont mean the same weed that gardeners pull out of front yards; no, my clothes smell like the other kindthe marijuana kind. So after I got home and reected upon my two hours spent in Hollywood, I realized that my journey to the Hollywood Forever to watch a scary movie in the middle of the night was nothing more than a complete disappointment and a waste of time. The result of my expedition was nothing like I imagined. Instead of a frightful experience, and an anticipated sleepless night, after watching the movie, all I got was a wasted two hours lled with stupidity and clothes that now smell like marijuana. For those who dont know me, I am the worst person to watch a scary movie with. I scream, squirm, and squeal throughout the entire thing. But really, alliteration aside, I truly am the biggest wuss known to man. However, during the 1976 version of Carrie, which I watched in the cemetery on Saturday, I could only laugh at the stupidity of the movie. I also spent a lot of time gagging, but not because of the supposed horric images that were projected onto the wall of a building I suspected to be a mortuary. I was gagging because of the overwhelming smell of marijuana, as the fumes wafted over with each breeze that came my way. Dont ask me how I know it was weed the cemetery-goers were smoking. I just know. The telepathic main character of the movie, Carrie, hence the title of the lm, was apparently supposed to frighten the audience with each use of her telepathic powers. However, every time horror music played and the camera zoomed in on a shot of her face when she telepathically moved something, or killed someone, I couldnt help but laugh at the dumb bug-eyed look she had on her face. Every single character in the movie had hair the size of our football eld, but I suppose that just comes with the year the movie was made. Its a good thing I went to the cemetery with my friend. If it wasnt for her, Im sure I would have gotten jumped because of my obnoxious laughter directed toward the screen, or perhaps for the more likely reasonthe obnoxious gagging noises I directed toward those who were smoking joints. Ill admit though, the walk through the cemetery was quite frightening. This was not because of the so-called eerie music they blasted prior to the movie, but because of the many creepy headstones and the strange crowd of native West L.A.-ers carrying enough narcotics to knock out a fully grown horse. Hollywood is nothing short of eclectic. Among the 400-ish people who led into the cemetery, about half of them were either painted in dark gothic makeup, or were carrying illegal substances and alcohol. For the rst half hour after arriving, I spent my time trying to decipher whether each person was a he or a she. To be honest, I really couldnt tell through the pound of black and white makeup slabbed onto their faces. The movie was scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. and the gates to open by 5:00 p.m. We were late, so naturally, just about every single parking space was lled with strange Hollywood-ites. For two hours, my friend and I sat on wet grass in the very back corner of the clearing, watching a ridiculous movie surrounded by ridiculous people. If the people next to us werent openly making out, they were either shouting vulgar comments at the screen or smoking their joint. I vaguely recall someone jumping up and down, right in front of the screen, during the movie. Someone next to me actually brought a bottle of Champagne and lugged in a keg of beer. For the few moments of the movie when I actually looked at the screen, I saw naked women running around. Oh joy, thats just what I came all the way from Chino Hills for.

A&E Editor We often think of art as something painted or prepared with an absurd amount of thought in order to evoke certain feelings. These pieces are impressive, but they all lack one thing: life. The works of Eduardo Kac have been and will continue to change the eld of art as we know it by incorporating true science. Eduardo Kac is a transgenic artist, or a bio artist. He uses biotechnology and genetics to create his provocative art, which also allows him to explore scientic techniques and critique them. His first notable work was Genesis, which was commissioned by Ars Electronica 99. The piece explored the intricate relationship between biology, technology, interaction, and the Internet. The key piece was the artists gene, a synthetic gene created by Kac. To create the gene, Kac turned to the Bible and translated a sentence from the book of Genesis into Morse code. Then, he converted the Morse code into DNA base pairs, according to the conversion principle he designed himself. The gene was incorporated into bacteria, which was shown in the gallery. People surng the web had the ability to turn on an ultraviolet light in the gallery, which caused biological mutations in the bacteria. One of Kacs most wellknown works is the GFP rabbit, Alba. Kac commissioned a French lab to create a rabbit that would glow green under a specic blue light. GFP stands for green uorescent protein, a gene extracted from a species of jellysh. From the beginning of the project, both Kac and the laboratory agreed that after the exhibition, in which Kac and Alba

Courtesy of www.eduardokac.com would live pseudo-domicile in a gallery, Alba would be Kacs to take home. This, however, faced a lot of controversy when the lab that created Alba refused to keep to their agreement. Kac has tried repeatedly to get Alba back, but has failed. The newest of Kacs works is a series of works called the Specimen of Secrecy about Marvelous Discoveries. Its a compilation of various biotopes, living pieces that continually adapt and change during the exhibition, responding to internal metabolism and conditions in the environment. Each one is a self-sustaining ecology lled with earth and water. Kac himself controls the metabolism of the organisms, which allows him to produce continual evolving living works. Kac and his scientic art will undoubtedly have an impact on current art and society, further blending life into the arts.

Are you Done with Dunn?

Elizabeth Lee Staff Writer The Annunciation of Francesca Dunn, written by Janice Hallowell is quite a mouthful to say, much less understand. However, it is actually one of the most thought-provoking modern-day novels I have ever read; it challenges ones faith in religion and depicts the struggles of a teenage girl in unthinkable ways. Francesca Dunn starts out as an ordinary girl. However, readers soon learn that her parents are divorced, her best friend is emotionally unstable, and a kind homeless man has become very involved in her life. The young 14-year-old is soon convinced, thanks to the aforementioned homeless man, Chester, that she is the reincarnation of the Virgin Mary. Although she does not instantly believe it, building adoration for her and exaggerated instances of her divine powers are recited to her, and she soon becomes convinced that she is holy. Unfortunately, with her acceptance of her divine abilities comes her arrogance and pride associated with becoming instantly famous. Like other works of literature that explore mans divine connection with God, such as Jodi Picoults Change of Heart, Hallowell leaves readers free to decide for themselves

whether they believe that the protagonist is the reincarnation of Mary or if she is a delusional schizophrenic. Hallowell takes readers through the entire ordeal from several different points of view that each have their own style and personality. However, even in Francescas point of view, readers do not see her thoughts or feelings. This allows readers to understand what every characters opinions are, except Francescas; and in the end, readers are free to choose which character they agree with, and perhaps contemplating the question: Who was right? This novel uses emotive language and imagery to draw readers close to the characters. The author also takes readers through every aspect of each characters life, adding little quirks and details to make them sound all the more real. The author expertly manipulates her readers emotions to draw them deeper into the novel. The setting, modern-day America, plays a huge role in this book. With alcohol/drug addictions, divorces and depression, this book seems to parallel our current society. The setting of this book appeals to many readers because it is easy to relate to as well as understand. One of the things I enjoyed most about the novel was all the controversial topics that surfaced, ones that we are afraid to question. For example, one of the most apparent controversies brought up in the story was where the ne line was between schizophrenia and holiness. For instance, Joan of Arc has been regarded both as a prophet of God and a woman who was simply hearing voices in her head. In this story, Francesca is regarded both as a virgin capable of miracles and a delusional girl who is the product of negative enviromental inuences. This novel forces us to think about the topics we have been taught to accept and explore the opinions of different types of people. Though this book is at times emotionally provocative, it will catch your attention and leave you wondering about the same challenges that have plagued the characters in the book long after youve nished it.

Jane Park Asst. A&E Editor Museums can seem boring, except when they have events where you sing karaoke or when they encourage you to go on a drug run. Nope, they just dont make museums like MOCA anymore. MOCA, the Museum of Contemporary Art, is the site of several events collectively called the Engagement Party series. The organizers are artists from the Los Angeles based group called the Finishing School. Every rst Thursday of the month, the Finishing School plans on having interventions to introduce fun into what would be an ordinary museum experience. The rst event, in October, was appropriately named Executive Order Karaoke. Guests were encouraged to participate by singing their favorite mixes of George W. I Will Survive. In November, the Finishing School will once again do something outrageous called the Little Pharma Drug Run. Participants will meet at MOCA for a costume-making session to help them dress as their favorite pharmaceuticals. Afterward, the group will go on a bike tour of drugstores in downtown L.A. in these outts. Following the tour, the group will congregate at Fringe Exhibit, where participants can explore Finishing Schools Little Pharma, a project that investigates the use of alternative medicines and lifestyle changes as cures for some of the drug industrys diseases. If the Executive Order Karaoke is any indication of what participants can expect from the Finishing School, the Little Pharma Drug Run is sure to be entertaining. The group will meet at MOCA Grand Avenue in Downtown L.A. on November 6 from 7:00 to10:00 PM for what will be a memorable experience.

Ever since the release of the Nintendo DS (2004) and the Play Station Portable (2005), handheld consoles have been an ever-more popular presence in the pockets of gamers all over the world. The accessibility and freedom granted by these portable consoles have enabled gamers, old and young alike, to game on the go. Since its release, each console has had noticeable upgrades, including the DS Lite from Nintendo, and the PSP Slim from Sony. Many thought it would stop there, but on October 2, Nintendo confirmed the rumors that the DSs hardware will be upgraded in a new package simply titled: the DSi. The DSi is by no means a new console, so dont worry about having to discard your beloved DS games just yet. However, the Gameboy Advance slot will be replaced with an SD memory card slot for storing music, images, and even downloadable content. This new development has been received with mixed reactions as games like Guitar Hero: World Tour, which uses the Gameboy Advance slot to make the DS simulate a guitar, will not work on the DSi. Still, the Gameboy Advance is about four years out of date. If your jaw hasnt dropped yet, it will. In addition to the new SD card slot, the DSi boasts many other improvements. Some noticeable updates include a camera on the outside of the DSi (3 megapixels) and a camera on the inside of the DSi (.3 megapixels), both with a 640 x 480 resolution, which is about standard web picture size. Along with that are physical updates, including the DSis smaller size by about 2.6 mm, screens that are now both .25 in bigger, and improved speakers. Other updates i n c l u d e programs such as the storage of downloadable apps, editing and exporting pictures taken with your DSi, and adjusting sound playback. The DSi will still have built-in Wi-Fi but will now include an Internet browser and access to an online shop for the DSi. The DSi will launch in Japan November 1st of this year marked at $179. The release date and price for the DSi internationally is, at the moment, scheduled for sometime in 2009, but neither has been announced as of yet. Keep your eye open for this improved bundle of touch-based fun and convenience.

I am an artist...and I do not approve of John McCain. Courtesy of www.nymag.com his supporters, and Obama has his. But which candidate has the musical industry on their side? That would be Obama. McCain, sticking to the classics, has used songs such as Jackson Brownes Running on Empty and Hearts Barracuda. Neither artist is pleased with his use of the songs. Browne is even ling a lawsuit against McCain and Heart is asking McCain politely to change the song; McCain, however, is pursuing no action to do so. He is also using Medal of 2004 campaigns. Brooks and Dunn who supported Bush and the Republicans, now supports Obama and the Democrats. Music plays an important role in peoples lives and sets the tone for certain situations; deranged hip-hop music is used to pump athletes up and deep, touching songs can be used to move the presidential election toward a certain candidate. However, music has its limitations as well, and the winning vote goes to Obama who has the music industry on his side.

What Are Cross Country Preps for Your True Finals in San Diego Colors?
Kevin Acciani Staff Writer Sure, everyone who likes sports says they are true fans of a certain team. But there is a ne line between the true, diehard, face-painting, extremely obsessive fans, and the worst things in the world of sports, bandwagoners. For those of you who dont know what a bandwagoner is, it is someone who only follows a team once they start doing well. Bandwagoner come in many shapes and sizes, and often they are very good at hiding their true identity. Do you think someone you know may be one of them? Here are a few quick tests to enlighten you on their fan status. If you are a bandwagoner, you can name your teams starting quarterback and, maybe, running back. If you are a true fan, you can name the rst round pick that was supposed to lead your team to greatness, but failed. Example: You may know who Phillip Rivers is, but do you know the name Ryan Leaf? Does hearing that name still make you cringe? If so, you are a real Charger fan. Bandwagoners may know some history about their team, but they arent experts. True fans live and die by the history of their team, and are still hurt by much of it. Example: It is common knowledge that Dave Roberts had the stolen base to set up a miracle ALCS comeback, but do you cry when you hear the names of legendary Sox killers Bucky Dent, Aaron Boone, and the immortally infamous Bill Buckner? If so, then congratulations, you are a part of the elite Red Sox Nation. A bandwagoner loves to go to ballgames, when their team is on a roll. True fans are still waving their team ag when it is having the worst start in franchise history. Example: Many bandwagoners loved going to games at the end of the Angels 2002 World Series run, but only true fans went to games at the beginning of what looked to be a horrible 2002 season. If you were one of those, you are a real Angel fan. Bandwagoners almost always have a jersey of the young, newly signed player on the team. True fans have jerseys of their favorite unknown player from 20 years ago. Example: Wearing a Manny Ramirez jersey does not make someone a great Dodger fan. Wearing a 1984, #21 Bob Bailor jersey probably does. Bandwagoner fans leave their team when things start to look bad. True fans are still at every game. Example: Do you still go to Raiders games? How about the L.A. Kings? If so, you deserve to be called a true fan in exchange for your pain and misery. Im sure many people will test themselves and not be happy with the results. The test does, after all, have room for ones own perspective and has a slight margin of error. If you feel that you should be considered a true fan, go out and buy a Bailor jersey; go to a Kings game; do something to prove your existence as a real sports fan, more than just going to a game. DISCLAIMER: Results may vary. Side effects may include nausea, indigestion, upset stomach, and extreme anger. If any of these symptoms occur, please consult your nearest sports store. Just One More Chance

Ryan DeVore Asst. Sports Editor Its the time of the season when the MLB takes center stage and America watches their beloved teams play the roles of complete underdogs or favored power-houses. A Hunt for October has been fullled by all organizations, but only the cream of the crop can make it to the rst round of the ght. Thats where the controversial debate lies: in the rst round of the postseason. It is a corrupt system that rivals that of the BCS rankings. The format of a best-of-ve series instead of a best-of-seven playoff doesnt make sense at all, for it changes the true nature of the playoffs for the worst. First of all, the drama and excitement of a series that stretches to a crucial game seven is forever lost. Thats what baseball fans across the U.S. long for, a dramatic ending to a long season. Does the commissioner think that no drama can be created through a competition between an underdog wild card team and a divisional winner power-house? Just take the 100 gamewinning Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim against the scrappy Boston Red Sox, who had to claw their way to the playoffs. Even though the Angels delivered a brutal beating to the Sox during the regular season, the club from Boston still found a way to uncover some postseason magic and topple the Angels three games to a lonely one. Now I bring up the question of the formatting. Is there a possibility that the, once again, 100-game winning Angels could have turned the series around just like the Red Sox did to the New York Yankees in 2004 in the American League Championship Series? Thus, the possibility of a comeback for the ages is shattered due to the opportunity being taken away from the Halos. So what is there not to love about a seven-game series in the rst round of the postseason? The fans would receive the drama and excitement they deserve, while the MLB would only rack in only more piles of precious money. However, while the fans and league would receive their incentive, the players would be getting the greatest opportunity of all, which is a trip to the big show, commonly known as the World Series. Dont get me wrong. The teams that have dug themselves in deathly holes have only themselves to blame, but just that sliver of hope of a dramatic comeback is stripped from the athletes that put their hearts and souls into their franchises. This isnt a pitty parade for the teams that were swept in three games, but a mere stride to bring a different attitude toward the post season. Post season magic is attainable by any team that enters the playoffs. So am I making an excuse for the teams, say for the Angels, for not defeating a team that they destroyed in the regular season? Absolutely not. The Angels were the cause of such a collapse and the Red Sox deserved to advance. All I propose is a different outlook on the post season, with a couple of extra playoff games in the rst rounds that will create a more dramatic series. If the Red Sox can comeback, so can everyone else.

Its not going to be easy. But I know we can do it.

Later, freshman James Powell and junior co-captain Tim Huang nished within a second of each other with times of 19:17 and 19:18. Junior Roger Huang ended the day for the Brahmas, nishing at 20:31. The team feels condent that theyll make CIF. I think our team is ready, stated Tim Huang. What we are aiming for is just third place. We just need to stick to the game plan. Their condence comes from their performance in their last league meet. There, the boys placed third, beating the fourth place nisher, Chino Hills High School, by over 20 points. However, the team must not become complacent. Head coach Brian Wiencek said that Chino Hills simply ran a bad race that day. With their eyes set on the prize, the team has a strong chance of making CIF. Its not going to be easy, commented Roger Huang. But I know we can do it.

Volleyball Defeats Glendora 3-2 After Tiebreak

Phoebe Hua Sports Editor With an amazing victory over the Glendora Tartans after an intense tiebreak game last Wednesday, October 22, the Lady Brahma volleyball team is now tied for rst place in the Sierra League with the Tartans. The Brahmas and the Tartans had a tough battle for the win, but the game went in favor of Diamond Bar, 3-2. The game started off strong for the Brahmas as they defeated the Tartans in the rst two games, 25-17, and 25-12, respectively. We played like we never played before and we were really pumped up. Everyone was mentally focused and we had an inspirational pre-game talk where everyone had input, said senior captain Jamie Parke. However, the Brahmas lost their solid lead as Glendora took over and won the next two games 25-23 and 25-22, respectively. So, with the overall score at 2-2, the teams were forced to play a tiebreak game. Coming into the tiebreak, Parke said, We tried to stay really positive, tried not to get tense, and supported each other even if we messed up. The Brahmas won 15-11, breaking the tie and making the ending game score 3-2, advantage to Diamond Bar. The Lady Brahmas displayed great teamwork throughout the game, with each player individually contributing to the teams victory. Senior Katie Kelly said, We really wanted it and we believed in each other, and Im really excited and proud that we won! Head Coach Becky Bevans could not even pick a and freshman Kathleen Torres both had four aces to add to the teams win. Other than the obvious chemistry between the girls, the components of their win were that their serves and receives were strong, their defense was aggressive, and they were condent in offense, taking more risks and running more plays than normal. Bevans said about the game, It was the best team performance of the season. Everyone did what they should have done. Our stats were high in everything we did. It was an amazing win for us. So, for the second round, the Brahmas came back ready to get their revenge. We made sure we didnt get overcondent and didnt let out. We knew we had to keep ghting, said Parke. Both teams currently have a record of 5-1, making them tied for rst place in the Sierra League. With this rst place standing, it looks as though the Brahmas will go to CIF this year.

Ryan DeVore Asst. Sports Editor The Lady Brahma golf team packed their bags for the road to face off against Rosary High School at Western Hills Country Club on Thursday, October 23. Despite difcult playing conditions, the Brahmas decisively defeated their opponent by seven strokes with a nal score of 234-242. With this victory, the team improved their record to .500, with ve losses and ve wins. Coach Phil Duarte claimed that they played teams that they knew were tough, so that they could get the experience they needed in order to have a successful run

It was really tricky because it wasnt our home course and the pressure was on to win our last match.

The girls hung tough and we prevailed, commented Coach Duarte on the teams show of perseverance a n d determination during their m a t c h . T h e greens at W e s t e r n Hills were, according to the coach, extremely fast and the fairways were narrow. Also, the fairways were protected by hordes of trees that required precise tee shots in order

to be able to attack the pin. Co-captain Lizz Torrecillas commented on the difcult conditions by stating, It was really tricky because it wasnt our home course and the pressure was on to win our last match. Due to the fact that the team had only played on that course once before, the team had to overcome an incredible disadvantage because the girls from Rosary were well aware off all the twists and turns on the course. Prior to this stellar performance, the team had competed in the coveted Knabe Cup at Lakewood Country

Club. After the girls 18-hole scores were recorded, the team placed 9th out of a total of 31 teams. The team nished with a total score of 452, an impressive total that rivaled those of other top-notch schools. Coach Duarte described the course as being in decent shape, which was a concern because of the fungi that infested the greens and fairways. The team not only had to overcome this obstacle, but also the extremely hot weather, further affecting the performance of the girls. With the team having already nished with eight rounds of golf under a nine-hole total score of

240, the team is optimistic about their chances of qualifying for the CIF playoffs. According to Coach Duarte, the team is condent but not overcondent. If the team qualies for CIF, then the girls will play at Rio Hondo Golf Course in the rst round.

Brahmas Lose Heartbreaker to Ayala Bulldogs, 40-0

Kevin Acciani Staff Writer It has been said that 90% of football games are won by heart, and effort alone can be enough to win a game. However, that doesnt always work. Although the Brahmas fought hard all game long, they fell short to the Ayala Bulldogs, 40-0. Ayala and Diamond Bar have been rivals for a long time, dating back to the mid 90s, when the Sierra League was created. During Diamond Bars time of greatness (winning three CIF titles in ve years), Ayala was the other powerhouse in the area, and games between the two were ferocious, hard-fought battles between two rivals that really hated each other. This game was no different. It was a well played game, and one could feel the hatred from a mile away. Years and years of loathing were put in this one mistakes hurt the defense and game, this one last chance for gave the Bulldogs great eld the seniors to prove themselves positions, making it very difcult against a tough opponent. The rst half did not go very well for Diamond Bar because they ended it down 28-0. Clock control helped Ayala the most, since their average drive was about six minutes, half of each quarter. Those long drives let their offense rest and kept the Brahmas defense on the eld with no rest. The Bulldogs had only four offensive possessions in the rst half and they scored on all four. The second half went a lot better, with Diamond Bar only giving up 12 points by the end of the half. The offense started to play a lot better too. Their drives became longer and longer. In the end, there really isnt anything bad to say. The Brahmas gave it their all, and it will be a good experience for them to move on and become a better team.
