DRILLING AND TAPPING ON A MILD STEEL PLATE

AIM: To drill and tap 4 holes on a Mild Steel plate as per the dimensions given in the sketch using Drilling machine and Die set MATERIALS REQUIRED: M.S. Flat 50 X 50 X 6 mm thick TOOLS AND INSTRUMENTS REQUIRED: 1. Steel rule 2. Dot punch 3. Hammer 4. Drill bit 5. File (flat surface) 6. scriber 7. vernier caliper 8. Divider 9. Tri Square 10. Spanner 11. Die set PROCEDURE: 1. Drilling is the process of removing solid material from the job to produce a circular hole. 2. Before drilling, the center of the hole is located by drawing two lines at right angle and a center punch is used to make an identification for the drill point(at the center) to start the drilling operation 3. A suitable drill bit is held in the drilling machine chuck and the machine is adjusted to operate at the correct cutting speed. 4. The drilling machine is started and the drill starts rotating. Cutting fluid is allowed to flow liberally and the cut is started. 5. The drill bit is fed into the job slowly. 6. The hole, depending upon its length, may be drilled in one or more steps of cut. 7. After the drilling operation is completed the drill bit is removed from the hole and the power is turned off. 8. The chips are cleared from both the drill flutes and the job with the help of a brush. The job is unclamped from the machine vise and all burrs are cleared with the help of a brush. RESULT: Thus the job has been produced as per the dimensions given in the sketch using Drilling machine and Die set.

INTERNAL KEY WAY CUTTING ON A M.S ROUND ROD

AIM: To produce 4 Nos. of internal keyways in the M.S. Round rod as per the dimensions given in the sketch, using slotting machine. MATERIALS REQUIRED: M.S Round rod 50 mm X 25 mm length TOOLS and INSTRUMENTS REQUIRED: 1) Parting tool 2) Spanner set 3) Punch 4) Vernier caliper PROCEDURE: 1. For slotting a keyway first of all scribe the centre lines across the work piece and mark the width(4 mm) of the keyways on the work piece.. 2. Set the job on a pair of parallels above 10 mm to 12 mm high and clamp down. 3. Use a parting tool about 10 mm wide and clamp it in the tool holder. 4. Adjust the stroke of the ram suitably and move the ram so that the tool just cuts the keyway slowly during down stroke of the tool. 5. When within about 0.5 mm of depth wind away from tool, move sideways until edge of tool will slot one side of keyway to the marking out. 6. Finish that side to the marking out using a very fine feed. 7. Use a 12mm slip gauge and finish the other side of the keyway until a tight fit to the gauge is achieved. 8. Finish the bottom of the keyway. RESULT: Thus the 4 numbers of internal keyways are cut on a M.S round rod as per the dimensions given in the sketch cutting by using slotting machine.

SURFACE GRINDING ON A M.S FLAT

AIM: To produce a M.S Flat as per the dimensions given in the sketch using surface grinding machine. MATERIALS REQUIRED: M.S.Flat 50X 50 X 6 mm thick TOOLS REQUIRED: 1. Vernier Caliper 2. Micrometer 3. Steel Rule PROCEDURE: 1. Check whether the given work piece is suitable for this operation. 2. Locate the given work piece on the magnetic chuck 3. Then the work piece is machined with the help of driving wheel 4. This machining process is done on the both side of work piece to obtain good surface finish. 5. Then the dimensions of work piece were checked by using vernier caliper.

RESULT: Thus the given job is machined as per the given dimensions in the sketch using surface grinding machine.

EXTERNAL KEYWAY CUTTING ON ALUMINIUM ROUND ROD

AIM: To produce 4 Nos of external keyways as per the dimensions given in the sketch using milling machine.

MATERIALS REQUIRED: Aluminium 32 X 30mm length

TOOLS AND INSTRUMENTS REQUIRED: 1) Parting tool 2) Spanner set 3) Punch 4) Vernier caliper PROCEDURE: 1. Initially the work piece is marked according to given dimensions. 2. The cutting tool (milling cutter) is inserted in the milling arbour 3. The work piece is clamped on the machine vice and the required depth of cut is set. 4. The machining is performed by operating the tool towards the work piece. 5. Finally, we get one external keyway cut on the work piece. 6. Repeat the same procedure and produce other three external key ways on the work piece. RESULT: Thus the 4 Nos of external keyways are cut on Aluminium rod as per the dimensions given in the sketch using milling machine.
