Cam Plates
CAM PLATE The Cullen CP Cam Plate allows the connection of timber joints by using perforated plates on each face of the joint, nailed together through the jointed timber. Cam plates have characteristic depressed dimples around pre-stamped nail holes. For fixing the Cam Plates we suggest 30mm x 3.75mm square twisted nails, hand fixed through the pre-stamped nail holes. MATERIAL s 1.0mm galv mild steel - G275 Cam plates available to order in 80 / 105 or 150mm widths and any length in increments of 50mm DESIGN AND SIZING OF CAM PLATES FOR TIMBER TO TIMBER JOINTS All Timber to Timber Joints for use on Trussed Rafter frames must be designed in accordance with Guidelines given in BS 5628 Part 3:1998. Careful consideration must be given to End and Edge Distances, as no nails can be fixed within these areas without the possibility of the timber splitting, so no load carrying capacity should be taken for these areas. A cam plate should be positioned on each side of the joist, with nail fixings from alternate faces to avoid nails clashing. Care should be taken to ensure equal numbers of nails are fixed from each side. TYPICAL JOINT ARRANGEMENTS Fix nails only in hatched area of timber
On butt Joints Fix nails only in hatched area of timber. BS 5268 Part 3: CI 6.5.6 states that irrespective of theoretical design requirements, the minimum dimensions of the cam plate should be taken as: WIDTH = NOT LESS THAN 0.7h LENGTH = NOT LESS THAN (0.8h + 80mm). Where h is the depth of the member in millimetres. Careful consideration should be applied to butt joints carrying moments, where polar moment design checks should be applied. TYPICAL JOINT ARRANGEMENTS - Heel Joints Additional Design/Detailing Rules BS 5268 Part 3: CI 6.5.6 states that irrespective of theoretical design Fix nails only requirements, the minimum bite of the cam plate into a chord member in hatched should be taken as the greater of the following: area of timber (0.2L + 15)mm Where L is the overall size of the cam plate in millimetres (mm) measured at right angles to the chord member 30mm, or 0.25h Where h is the depth of the member in millimetres (mm). Where the trussed rafter is supporting imposed loads greater than or equal to 1.5 kN/m2 all joints should be designed for 50% greater forces than those used in the member design, and the minimum fastener bite should be taken as 0.5 times the depth of the member in millimetres (mm). These limits do not apply to butt joints.
SPLICE PLATE The Cullen SP Splice Plate is suitable for butt jointing timbers of similar cross section TYPICAL APPLICATIONS s Replacement of damaged or decayed end joists s Repairing localised damage to structural timber MATERIAL s 1.0mm GALV MILD STEEL- G 275 For fixing the SP350 splice plate we suggest using 3.75 x 30mm square twisted nails installed using the pattern shown. The capacity of butt joints formed with SP splice plates will depend upon the type of forces acting on the joint (e.g. tension or bending), and in the case of bending members, what their span is. Restraint Straps
RESTRAINT STRAPS Horizontal and Vertical straps are required by the Building Regulations, BS 5268 : Part 3 and other building standards for horizontal and vertical restraint when connecting timber floor and roof systems to masonry walls. s Cullen horizontal restraint straps meet Building Regulation requirements for lateral restraint of walls via roof trusses, rafters or joists. s Vertical restraint straps are designed for vertical loads such as holding down wall plates on top of masonry walls. s Horizontal lateral restraint straps should be spaced not more than 2m centres and attached to at least 3 timber members through the use of noggings and packing. Attach to timber members with four screws or four 4mm x 75mm round nails for roofs and two into each joist for floors. s Vertical strapping should be at least 1m long. Fix to masonry with at least 3 no 12 x 50mm screws. At least one screw should be located within 150mm of the bottom end of the strap. Nailing into the masonry is not acceptable.

Restraint Straps
RES - ROLLED EDGE STRAPS The Cullen RES rolled edge strap offers the specifier, arguably, the most engineered rolled edge profile on the market. Its unique, double rolled profile directly transfers the load from the fixings, through the strap to the building superstructure maximising performance. Under test (Ceram) the RES restraint strap performed at a similar level to the traditional 5mm strap with performance being restricted by nail / fixing failure. When failure was not related to fixings the RES out-performed traditional horizontal restraint straps. TECHNICAL BENEFITS s Unique double rolled section s 4mm holes more compatable with nails used s Direct load transfer through internal form, maximises performance s Lightweight MATERIAL s 2.0mm galv mild steel - G275 ORDER EXAMPLE 1600mm overall RES with one bend 150mm = 1450/150 RES PFS The PFS is an innovative concept in floor system restraint. It consists of a lightweight single piece product that can be fixed in the conventional manner as illustrated or alternatively it can be fixed onto the top flange of the I-Joist flange and into noggings supported off Cullen UZ Z-clips or by skew nailing. It has been verified by CERAM as providing comparable load performance to either the RES or the traditional 30mm x 5mm strap with the additional benefits of faster construction times, greater load spread between strap and masonry, plus a heavier galvanised protective coating. Restraint Straps
RESTRAINT STRAPS PARALLEL The second situation where masonry walls need restraint is in the parallel to joist direction. The Building Regulations have always required restraint straps to be used in this direction, but the new Building Regulation Part L robust hanger support detail for air tightness has removed the restraint traditionally provided by the joist being built into the masonry wall and reinforces the need for the hanger/strap connection to provide that parallel restraint system. The simple way is to specify one of the various tested Cullen options that securely fixes to the side of the I-Joist flange. The straps feature a double 90 bend to allow them to transfer the load from the side of the top flange over the masonry hanger and against the outside of the inner leaf of masonry.

GENERAL NOTES 1. Perpendicular restraint straps should be fixed at maximum 2m spacing along the wall, and extend over at least 3 joists. 2. In all cases noggings should be tight fitting between the I-joists and nominally fixed to the strap using a minimum of 3 no nails or screws into each nogging. 3. When using the PFS strap, 38 x 89mm or 47 x 97mm noggings may be installed flat wise between the joist flanges and fixed using either UZclips or skew nailing. 4. Cullen RES, PFS and PST restraint straps have been tested and verified by CERAM as having equivalent performance to the traditional restraint strap.
5. Parallel restraint straps should be fixed at convenient joist locations along the wall and be spaced no greater than 2m apart. They should be fixed to the I-joist flange using a minimum of 7 no 3.75 x 30mm square twist nails. 6. Contact Cullen Technical for requirements not listed 7.
