TITLE Compacting factor test.

OBJECTIVE To determine the degree of difference between half compress concrete and fully compressed concrete density.

THEORY In its fresh state, concrete is tested for its consistency so as to achieve the desired workability. Workability is an important property in concrete since a workable mix will produced concrete, which can be well compacted, transported and placed without segregation. A well-compacted concrete will produce a good strength concrete.

APPARATUS 1. Two conical hoppers and cylinder. 2. Weighing machine. 3. Steel Rod. 4. Scoop.

PROCEDURE

1. Clean thoroughly inner surface of hoppers to reduce friction. 2. Each hopper has hinged door (trap door) at the bottom.Make sure that this door is close before commencing the test. 3. Fill up the upper hopper with concrete to the brim. 4. Release the door to let the concrete falls into the lower hopper. 5. Release the door of the second hopper to let the concrete falls into the cylinder. 6. Cut of excess concrete from the top of the cylinder by sliding it across with two floats. 7. Determine the net weigth of the concrete. This weigth is known as weight of partially compacted concrete.(W) 8. Empty the cylinder and refill it with the concrete from the same sapmple in three layers.Tamp each layer 25 times with the standard steel rod. 9. Level off the top surfaces of the cylinder and weight it to be the nearest 10mg. This weight is known as weight of fully compacted concrete.(W) 10. Calculate the compacting factor of concrete:

Weight of partially compacted concrete Weight of fully compacted concrete

RESULT MIXTURE Cylinder weight Cylinder weight+partially compacted concrete Weight of partially compacted concrete,W Cylinder weight+fully compacted concrete Weight of fully compacted concrete,W Compression factor(W/W) 1:2:4 (g) 2.707 11.850 9.143 13.180 10.473 0.873 1:3:6 (g) 2.890 10.745 7.855 11.815 8.925 0.880

CONCLUSION The compaction factor test has been used more widely in Europe than in the United States, although the overall use of the test seems to be declining. The test has typically been used in precast operations and at large construction sites. Compared to the slump test, the apparatus is bulky and a balance is required to perform measurements. In addition to these practical drawbacks, the test has several flaws that reduce the accuracy of the results. Some of the work imparted into the concrete is lost in friction between the hoppers and the concrete. The magnitude of this friction varies between different concrete mixtures and may not reflect field 8 conditions. Further, the compaction factor test does not utilize vibration, the main compaction method used in the field (Bartos 1992). Compaction Factor is the ratio of the weight of partially compacted concrete to the weight of the concrete when fully compacted in the same mould. The weight of partially compacted concrete in relation to its fully compacted state is a reasonably good indication of the workability of concrete. The conclusion we can conclude is ,the test result compression factor is shown 0.873 and 0.880.Its mean the consistency of compression factor is stiff. The consistency become stiff because water cement ratio is release.Althought the water cement ratio is realease the workability also decrease but the strength become increase.
