Course Outline
Sensors, Actuators and Signal Processing
Department of Mechatronics Engineering, Spring 2013
Course Description
This is a mandatory course for mechatronics engineering students covering the fundamental aspects of the field of mechatronics including signal processing, data acquisition and introduction to different sensors, transducers and actuators. The course covers theory and basic design principles required in the construction of smart systems; closely coupled and fully integrated products and systems. Topics may include actuators and sensors, interfaces, control engineering and instrumentation and automation concepts.

Course Contents and Objectives


1. Measurement Terminologies including resolution, sensitivity, accuracy etc. 2. DC and AC Wheatstone Bridges (Variable Conversion Elements) 3. Analogue Signal Processing using Operational Amplifiers a. Understand the input/output characteristics of a linear amplifier. b. Understand how to use the model of an ideal operational amplifier in circuit analysis. c. Be able to design an inverting amplifier, non-inverting amplifier, summer, difference amplifier, instrumentation amplifier, integrator, differentiator, comparator and sample and hold amplifier. d. Understand the characteristics and limitations of a real operational amplifier 4. Data Acquisition a. Understand how to properly sample a signal for digital processing. b. How digitized data are coded. c. Know the components of an A/D converter. d. Understand how A/D and D/A converters function and recognize their limitations. 5. Sensors and Transducers a. Understand the fundamentals of simple electromechanical sensors, including proximity sensors and switches, potentiometers, linear variable differential transformers, optical encoders, strain gauges etc. b. Understand how force, torque and tactile sensors work and exploit their applications. c. Be able to use different temperature sensors such as thermocouple, thermistors and resistance temperature detectors (RTDs) and introduce to non-contact temperature sensing. d. Introduce to the fundamentals and applications of ultrasonic and ranger sensors. e. Introduction to acceleration sensors and types of acceleration measurement techniques. Also understand the dynamics and characteristics of accelerometers.
