Security advice
Caution !!! Avoid looking directly into the front side of a powered AirLaser. The invisible infrared light may injure your eyes!

AirLaser IP1000 is in accordance with the following standards: DIN EN 55024 1999-05 Interference immunity of electrical facilities DIN EN 50022 1999-05 Emittance security of electrical facilities IEC 60825-1: 1993 and Amendment 2: 2000-01 Radiation security of laser equipment:
Accordingly the stations are classified in laser class 1M. This recommends as security rules: Do not look into the laser and do not use optical instruments such as telescopes, magnifying glasses or similar instruments to look into the unit from the front side. Mount the devices in a way that guarantees the emitting light above the height of the eyes. Do not expose your eyes to the invisible laser beams.

EN 60 950: 1998 or DIN VDE 0805/05.90 Security of installations of information technology including office machines DIN VDE0100 T410/11.83 Installation of high voltage equipment with nominal voltage up to 1000 Volt. Protection against dangerous body currents Accordingly the stations are listed under protection class 1 and therefore need to be grounded professionally. If the power is supplied by an external 230 V power supply please note: Caution!!! The power line must be connected with a three wire cable including a ground wire according to the technical regulations. The ground wire must be connected duly to the connector at the power supply.

Recommendation: For protection of individuals at direct or indirect contact with the equipment fit in the electrical circuit with a FI circuit breaker (30 mA). These facilities may only be installed by expert personnel. For further improvement of the availability and for protection against power failure connect the system with the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) of the computer equipment and also make use of the opportunity of the redundant 48 VDC power supply, if possible. Lightning The installation pole must be integrated in the grounding concept of the building and the necessary limits protection of the transition resistance have to be reached. The AirLaser has to be connected in a solid and durable way through the delivered potential equalization cable to compensate voltage differences. CBL recommends an expensive lightning protection through a lightning protection equipment installed by experts to avoid a long-lasting danger and damage to the units.

AirLaser manual

1 System Characteristics
1.1 What are the main applications for AirLaser systems?
The AirLaser IP1000 are free space optical links designed for coupling single LANs (Local Area Network) to remote buildings. They transmit Gigabit Ethernet in full-duplex mode over a distance of 800 meters directly through the atmosphere using infrared light. Each system consists of two stations that are connected to the LAN by fiber. Transferring data the system itself acts similar to a fiber connection.

The optional management module can be connected via multimode fiber (MTRJ) toward a 100BaseFX port. Management information is transmitted outbound!

1.2

Exceptional features of the system

The emphasizing progress of the AirLaser is its very compact construction, the modular system design and the individual adjustment.

1.3

Advantages for the user

Aside from the benefits like reasonable coupling (the systems operate licensefree and nearly maintenance-free) you will get a particularly high flexibility. The systems can bridge obstacles like roads, rivers or railroad tracks without expensive construction costs, provide high bandwidths and can be installed simply and fast.

1.4

Availability
The attenuation of the infrared light depends on the distance and the weather conditions. Only heavy fog, hard rain or snowfall can absorb the infrared beam in such an excessive way that the optical path is disconnected temporarily. The AirLaser systems offer a high system margin to restrain this effect (see graphic at page 18).

3 Installation
The AirLaser IP1000 system can be installed quick and easy in three steps: Select locations (chapter 3.1) preparatory work (chapter 3.2) Mounting and alignment of the stations (chapter 3.3) Recommendation: The installation and alignment of the stations should be executed by your supplier. Despite the fact that this procedure can be done easily and trouble-free his technician is in charge with more experience and special technical equipment (e. g. infrared viewer). Furthermore the systems will be mostly installed at some height above the ground.

3.1

Select locations
Selective criteria for locations and beam path: A direct line of sight is necessary. Install the station in a stable, vibration-free position. Nobody should be able to view directly into the local transmission beam. No smoke emissions (e.g. chimneys) should be beneath or close to the beam path since smoke absorbs infrared light. No outlet channels of warm air (e.g. air conditioners) should be beneath or close to the beam path since air creates turbulences which might deflect the beam. Variable obstacles (trees) or mobile obstacles (cranes) should not be able to interrupt the beam. The free access to the operation panel should be possible including the view to the control indicators. You can use a mirror at front-wall installations, if necessary. The holders must be mounted on a stable foundation. The station should be mounted on a location which is protected from wind, rain or sun if possible.

Recommendation: The extension of the optical path should never point directly towards the sun to avoid sunlight on the sensitive receiver. Otherwise short interruptions may occur when the position of the sun is located directly behind the remote transmitting unit.

3.2

Preparation for installation and start-up

Before you can install and set up the stations at the planned location you should carry out the necessary preliminary work. Mount the delivered holder at the planned location according to its installation instructions. At a front-wall or up right installation with screw mounting you should use stainless steel screws. Make sure that the installation is performed stable and the units can be mounted vibration-free. This is absolutely necessary for a flawless operation of the AirLaser systems. Set up the swivel heads which have been delivered with the systems and tighten the screws slightly. Lay the data and power cables to the destinated location. Make sure that the used cables are suitable.

14

AirLaser manual

15

AirLaser manual Recommendation: Use optical fibers for the glass fiber inlet pipe with at least 8 fibers (4 reserves) each single protected and with PE-shell. Please use the 3 x 1,5 mm2 external cable for the 230 V- connection; 0.5 mm2 for a 48 V DC-supply up to 50 m; 0.75 mm2 for up to 100 m and beyond that 1.5 mm2. Furnish the optical fibers with duplex SC plugs and label the ends of the cables accordingly (with TX and RX).

At the control panel of the AirLaser a drill hole is located at the right bottom which is labeled Beam adjust. This represents an adjustment aid for precise adjustment of the laser which can be operated with a hexagon socket screw driver 2.5 mm using two drill holes on the lower right (see red arrows). Turn each of the two adjustment points as far as it will go in one direction first and then opposite direction again as far as it will go. Count the rotations and fix the precise adjustment in the middle position (ex factory setting). Optional: Installation of the power supply at a pole (cable inlets always at the bottom!) Remove the power supply unit from the package. Please make sure not to bend the flexible tube. Slide both stainless steel bands through the slots of the metal plate on the rear side. Place the steel tongue around the pole (alternatively the power supply can be mounted horizontally for front-wall installations) and lead them through the fasteners. Fix the screws of the fastener. Let the tube hang loose.

3.3

Set-up, installation and alignment of the stations

The installation and alignment of the version with the AirLaser power supply (contains all connections for data lines and power feed and can be ordered optionally) differs from the version with own power supply by the customer and direct connection to the network.

3.3.1

Mounting of the station

By justification of the swivel heads make sure that the mounting surfaces are exactly horizontally. Drive the screws for vertical alignment (red arrow). Place the unit onto the surface matching the 4 drill holes of the swivel heads (blue arrows) exactly with the tap holes of the ground plane. Fix the AirLaser with the delivered 6 x 20 hexagon screws. For screw locking please use a flat washer and a circlip.

3.3.2 Optional: Connection to the original AirLaser power supply

Remove the protection cover of the operation panel by unscrewing the knurled screw in the middle of the lower edge of the cover. At the end of the flexible tube which is connected to the housing of the power supply an aluminum frame flange is mounted. Connect this frame with the designated recess under the operating unit of the AirLaser (step 1, red arrows) the tube connection is supposed to be on the left side. Afterwards fix it with the delivered knurled screws. (step 2, blue arrows). Finally connect the AirLaser housing with one of the steel bands of the power supply using the delivered equipotential conding cable (greenyellow). Please fix the cable to the marked drill hole in the middle of the bottom plane of the AirLaser which is directly beneath the depression for the cable adoption.

Put the voltage feed (green plug with 5 wires) in the destined socket on the left side of the operating panel.

3.3.3 Optional: Connecting the AirLaser to a 48 V DC voltage feed without original power supply
Remove the protection cover of the operating panel by unscrewing the knurled screw in the middle of the lower edge of the cover. Connect the provided aluminum frame with the designated recess under the operating unit of the AirLaser using the two PG screw connections (step 1, red arrows). Afterwards fix it with the delivered knurled nuts. (step 2, blue arrows).

17

AirLaser manual Establish a potential equalization (PE) between the AirLaser housing and the pole by fixing the provided steel band to the pole. Wrap it around the pole and pull the mounting link through the designated fastener. Tighten the steel band manually and tighten the screws. Connect the AirLaser housing with one of the steel bands of the power supply using the delivered PE cable (green-yellow). Please fix the cable to the marked drill hole in the middle of the bottom plane of the AirLaser which is directly beneath the recess for the cable adoption.

3.3.4 Connecting the optical fiber to the AirLaser

Remove the front plate by unscrewing the four nuts (yellow arrows) and pulling the plate at the handle bar (small black plastic ball). Behind the cover of the AirLaser version with management the modules are located. Pull off the two small coax cables of the left module (red arrows) and the ribbon cable (blue arrow). The yellow arrows show the duplex SC interface for data connection and MTRJ interface for the management data. Carefully pull out the module. Connect the optical fiber to the duplex SC and the MTFJ interfaces located at the lower end. Please pay attention to the correct polarity of the data connection: the lower interface is the RX interface that receives data from the network and provides them for transmission through the atmosphere (lower yellow arrow). Please check the jumper assignment of the optical fiber management port F2 (v. image) . The data transfer is pre-aligned to 100 Mbps full duplex at the optical fiber port F2. For the use of a half duplex connection please change the jumper assignments according to the following picture:

Full duplex Half duplex The F1 port is always configures as 1000 Mbps full duplex mode. Re-insert the circuit board. Make sure that it is placed in the destined slide and with soft pressure restore the contact with the back plane. DO NOT USE ANY HARD PRESSURE!!! DAMAGES OF THE CONTACTS MAY RESULT!! Reconnect the coax cable with the circuit board. The red labeled cable (v. arrow) belongs to the upper contact. Reconnect the ribbon cable. The marking of the cable (black in the picture) needs to be at the top. PLEASE CHECK THE TIGHT AND APPROVED PLACEMENT OF ALL CABLES!! Carefully reposition the front cover. Please pay attention to the cables

18

AirLaser manual they must not be bent or damaged. Fix the front plate with the four knurled nuts.

3.3.5 Optional: Connecting the power supply and the data line
Open the cover of the power supply by unscrewing the four screws on the front side of the housing and remove it. Remove the plastic isolation which functions as a touch protection by opening the knurled screw that is located in the middle. Lead the electric cable through the PG screw connection. The feeder clamp for the 230 V AC voltage feed is located in the lower right (red arrow). In case a redundant 48 V DC supply is also available please also lead it through the PG screw connection. The connections are located in the lower left corner of the power supply. Please pay attention to the correct polarity of the supply line. Reposition the plastic isolation back into the housing and fix the optical fiber feeder clamp with the nut to the retaining pin. Pull the optical fiber data line through the PG screw connection and connect the duplex sc plugs to the corresponding sockets. Please pay attention to the correct polarity! Place two loops of the optical fiber cable into the housing and reposition the cover. ATTENTION! THE CABLE MUST NOT BE BENT OR JAMMED!!! After turning on the power the AirLaser boots automatically.

3.3.6 Optional: Connection the 48 V DC power cord directly to the AirLaser

For the voltage feed insert the 48 V DC exterior cable into the right PG screw connection and tighten it. Furnish the 48 V DC cable with the provided plug. Pay attention to the correct polarity according to the marking. Plug it into the designated socket on the left side of the control panel.

The AirLaser will boot and run a self test.

3.3.7 The boot process of the AirLaser

Once the AirLaser is connected to the power supply it will boot. Normally this will happen only at setting-up operation or after an upgrade of firm- and software of the management module (see chapter 4.11). The boot process requires three steps: The AirLaser beeps once long, twice short and after 3 seconds once short again. This shows the successful self test. 19

AirLaser manual Afterwards the application module will boot. During the boot process the bargraph of the receive level indicator shows the progress:

The boot process is started and the I2C devices are scanned. External RAM is being tested Main-module is being loaded Application module is being initialized Internal Ethernet switch is being initialized Configuration of the application module EEPROM is being tested Configuration of the back plane EEPROM is being tested

If a fault occurs, the flashing bargraph shows the error code:

Ethernet switch EEPROM not found Application module EEPROM not found Back plane EEPROM not found Last but not least the management module is started. The bargraph indicator of the management module (page 9, number 19) shows the progress of the boot process:

20

AirLaser manual

Kernel of the operating system is being loaded Initialising of the system is being started Systempartitions are being tested File systems are being integrated into the system Software modules (device drivers) are being loaded erden (approximately 3 sec.) Web server, SNMP-agent, backup and the serial console are being started

By this the boot process of the management module comes to an end. The bargraph indicator of the module changes to normal operation: Signal strength of the incoming signal at the remote station (example!)

Note!

A normal boot process of the software image Airlaser.2.2.3 takes approximately 45 sec. If the status LED of the management module blinks after an update with following swap with reset of the system, a firmware-update takes place with a subsequent boot process. This may take several minutes, because depending on the upgrade operation for the different parts of the management, the systems need several boot-ups.

3.3.8 Alignment of the stations

Roughly align the station with the telescope towards the receiver by turning back and forth and adjusting the tilt angle until you can see the maximum amount of light emitting diodes in the left bar indicator. Tighten the screws of the swivel head tight enough so that the AirLaser cannot be moved any more. With the Beam-Adjust on the right side you can align the local transmitting beam with a 2.5 mm hexagon socket driver exactly towards the receiver. Corresponding inlet sockets are located on the right side and under the ground plane of the AirLaser (red arrows). Please note the maximum intensity of the destination field listed in the chart below. Close the control panel cover and fix it with the knurled screw to the base of the disc. Repeat these steps for the remote station.

4.1

Adaption of the management interface to your network

Before you can use the management you need to assign an IP-address and subnet-mask within your address area as well as the address of the standard gateway.

4.1.1 Assignment of the IP-address by console

In order to use the web management you will have to integrate the management module of the AirLaser into your network. You require a PC or notebook with serial interface and a null modem cable (D-Sub 9, female-female, crossed. The cable is not part of the scope of supply!) Connect the RS-232 port of the PC or notebook with the console interface of the AirLaser. (see no. 26 in picture on page 7). Switch-on the AirLaser and the computer. Start Hyperterminal with the following configuration: terminal emulation VT 100, 9600 Baud, 8 bit, n (no parity), 1 stop bit. The welcome screen of the AirLaser console appears with the request for the Read community password. For log-in you need the same passwords as for the web-based management. The factory set default passwords are public for the read- and private for the write community.

Warning!

After you entered the password the system requests the password for the write community.

If you enter a wrong password at this point, you cannot configure the system, but only read the parameters.

24

AirLaser manual Once you are logged-in you see the main menu of the console.

4.1.2 Configuration of the passwords for read/write access

Choose the submenu Communities by typing 1 at the system prompt.

You jump into the menu for changing the passwords. The default passwords (ex factory setting) are public for the Read community and private for the write community. For changing the password of the Read-Community choose 1. At the bottom of the window you will receive the request for entering the new password.

Attention!

Because every read access needs the password for the Read-Community, you have to LOG-IN again directly afterwards with the NEW PASSWORD. Otherwise you have no access to the configuration data any longer. Changing the Write-Community will be done entering 2. You can fill in the new password. The system will request the entry a second time for affirmation. At this point a new log-in is not necessary, only in case you want to make further changes of the configuration. With q you return to the main menu. 25

AirLaser manual

4.1.5 Reboot
Normally you do not need to restart the AirLaser. Apply enables you to execute changes at once. If a restart should be necessary you may initiate it by pressing r in the main menu. AirLasers then perform a shut-down and a restart of the system. By this the adoption of the AirLaser to your network by console is finished. Note! If there is no entry for more than 10 minutes by the terminal, the system terminates the session and you need a new log-in for continuing the configuration.

4.2

Access to the AirLaser management: The log-in procedure

Please establish an IP-connection to the management module of the AirLaser. Start your web browser and enter the IP-address of the required management in the address bar. Log-in to the AirLaser. The ex factory password settings are public for the read-community and private for the write-community. Please change the passwords during the first log-in.

4.3

Changing the passwords for access and SNMP-configuration

Login to the web-based management of the AirLaser with read-/write-access. Change to the submenu SNMP-Configuration.

28

AirLaser manual Here you may change the password for the community (visible by green frame). Changing the Read-community: Click into the corresponding field and fill in the new password for the Read community. Changing the Write-Community: Click into the corresponding field and fill in the new password for the Write community. Afterwards a message-box appears and requests a re-entry of the password. Acknowledge by pressing the OK-button and enter the password into the lower field of the Write-community passwords. Adopt the new passwords with Apply. After changing the communities you have to perform a new log-in! Without the right passwords an access to the management is not possible. Please take care of the passwords. If you forget the passwords you gain further access only by sending the management module to the manufacture for re-configuration and factory setup! In the lower part of the web-site you may configure up to three destination IPaddresses for sending the SNMP traps. The entries will be adopted automatically and need not to be affirmed by pressing Apply.

Attention!!!

4.4

IP configuration: Changing of the IP-address via web-management

Due to network modifications you may have to change the IP-address. The management supports this procedure. Login to the web management with read and write access. Choose IP Configuration in the menu on the left. The following screen appears including the prompting fields for VLAN configuration (v. chapter 4.1.4, page 26).

Now you can fill in the new data for the local IP-address, the subnet mask as well 29

AirLaser manual as the local gateway. (IF YOU DO NOT KNOW THE VALUES; YOU GET THE INFORMATION FROM YOUR SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR!) Both Domain Name Service (DNS)-server-entries are responsible for the release of the domain names. They are used to translate server names into the corresponding IP-addresses, which simplifies the addressing of outside contacts. Please enter the IP-address of the remote station in the corresponding field as well as the password for SNMP Read-community for this station. Both information are mandatory for a trouble-free exchange of management data with the remote station. If you entered the right values you will see some receiving levels of the remote station (see below) at the local unit. Use Apply to save the values to the configuration file of the AirLaser.

Now you changed the IP-addresses. A further description for configuring the VLAN at systems without backup you find in chapter 4.13, page 47.

4.5

Displaying the system status

Login to the web-based management of the AirLaser with read and write access. After successful log-in the system status is displayed. Here you may see actual information on the status of the system and the most important parameters. Besides you will find further details on the operating conditions of the AirLaser path in the menu Extended Information.

4.5.1 Structure of the overview

1. Data transmission path You will recognize quickly if the data transmission takes place through the optical path (green bar) or if the optical transmission is interrupted (red bar). Simultaneously you will note the actual receiving level of the local unit. The arrangement is equal to the respective displays at the unit. You will also receive a numerical display of the receiving level (dBm and percentage) and the field optical margin states the actual system margin of the installed link. By clicking into the graphics the management direclty changes to the system identification side. Note: The receiving levels of the remote station can only be displayed correctly, if you entered the right IP-address and the correct password for the Readcommunity of the remote station (see chapter 4.4)! 2. Status information text Directly beneath the graphical display the system provides you with additional system parameters. Aside the mode of operation the web-interface also indicates the status of the optical path and the front screen defroster. The right column indicates the data source (optical fiber port F1) actually being used as well as its transmitting mode. Two other displays indicate the current temperature in the system and the up-time of the SNMP agent.

30

AirLaser manual ATTENTION! The name of the local system (Local System Name) can ONLY be changed in the system identification menu, the identifier of the remote station only during log-in to the remote station by the web-based management! The setting of the transmission mode of the glass fiber port F1 is unchangeably pre-aligned to full duplex. 3. Extended Information

Note:

In this submenu you will find detailed information on systemparameters. The upper third of the display indicates the temperature of all deployed sensors inside the system. Below that you will find the internal voltage display. If the power is fed by the original AirLaser power supply, you will receive all actual data concerning the power sources (230/115 V AC and/or 48 V DC) to control the internally created voltages.

4.7

Event handling of AirLaser IP1000

The AirLaser management provides a large number of functions for configuration and monitoring of the system. Just as important is a logging of events which can influence the operation temporary or even permanently. These event-logs will help you to operate the transmission path safely over a long-lasting period since they notify problems timely like trees growing into the path. The management provides an own memory for registration and storage of eventlog files. Each file contains up to 200 entries. Afterwards a further file is generated by the system. The administration of all files takes place via the webbased management.

4.7.1 Which events become recorded?

The system records respectively the change in status of the supervised parameters. Among the collected events are: Over- respective undershooting of the common temperature of each AirLaser module; Change in status of the F1 port: Link up to link down or reverse; Change in status of the F2 port: Link up to link down and back; Change in status of the TP1 port; The power supply with the registration of over- respective under-voltage at 5V, 3.3V and 2.5V; Survey of the redundant input voltages 48VDC and 230VAC; Failure of an internal fan; Failure of the front screen defroster;

4.7.2 Event Configuration

The AirLaser disposes of three possibilities to log appearing events: Entry of an event into a log-file The log-file is stored locally in the configuration memory. By means of a web browser it can be viewed, printed, downloaded on a PC or deleted (see chapter 4.7.3 Working with event list). Each file contains a maximum of 200 entries and is marked with its name as well as date and time of the creation. In the configuration memory is space for at least 20 log-files. When exceeding this number you will get a message by e-mail that older files should be deleted. 33

AirLaser manual Sending an SNMP-trap For each event the AirLaser management can send an SNMP-trap to a maximum of three hosts (receiving computer). Each trap for an event will be sent only once. The destination computers (trap-destinations) can be indicated under item SNMP configuration (Chapter 4.3, page 24). The SNMP-trap is composed as follows:

Sending an e-mail Events can also be communicated by the AirLaser via e-mail. Under item SMTP configuration you can indicate up to four e-mail addresses to which the event message should be distributed. Example for an e-mail text:
AirLaser Event Report Serial Number: 1000135 IP address: 192.168.0.141 System Name: FH-Dieburg City: Dieburg Street: FH-Gelaende Time: Tue, 05 Nov 2002 13:47:51 Time: Tue, 05 Nov 2002 13:47:51 Time: Tue, 05 Nov 2002 13:47:51 Time: Tue, 05 Nov 2002 13:47:51 Time: Tue, 05 Nov 2002 13:47:51 Time: Tue, 05 Nov 2002 13:47:51 End of message. Event: F1 port interface status = link down Event: TP1 port interface status = link down Event: Fan1 status = standby Event: Fan2 status = standby Event: F1 port interface status = link up Event: TP1 port interface status = link up

The configuration takes place via mouse-click on the page Event Configuration: Login to the web-based management with read-/write-access. Switch to the page Event Configuration. There you will receive the overview of the recordable events, the desired logging via logfile, trap and/or e-mail as well as the actual status of the controlled systems. A change takes place with the setting or removing of a checkmark in the corresponding fields.

4.7.3 Working with event list

In the web-based management you will get all possibilities to view the log-files, to print, to download on a PC as well as to delete. Login to the web-based management with read-/write-access. Change to the menu Event List; View the files:

35

AirLaser manual With the first start of this menu the system will automatically display the actual log-file with the name eventlog. The file is structured as follows: Orange part (Read only): 1. line: Equipment indication including the add-on Event Logfile 2. line: Indicates the name of the file: <Name of the opened file>, the start of the logging in this file 3. line: The serial number of the device With it you will get all necessary information to allocate the log-file to a particular device. The window contains the list of the (up to 200) events. It starts with the following data: 1. line: Name of the system 2. line: The town as part of the installation location for this AirLaser IP1000 3. line: The street as part of the installation location for this AirLaser IP1000 Afterwards the logged events are following. The first column of an entry contains the index number of the entry. The date of the event follows in the second column and the time in the third. The last column contains the event itself. The columns are separated by tabulator positions whereby the log-file can be transmitted easily to a spread sheet program. After 200 entries the log-file will be closed and a new file will apply. Closed log-files will be stored in the AirLaser under the name eventlog_<date>_<time>. Example for a log-file:

Selection of an older file: At the lower area of the Event List page the choose-button is placed. The dialog for the selection of an older file will be displayed.

If more than 20 files are available a message box (see picture) will inform on it. Setting a marker in one of the radio buttons in front of the file name selects it. Click View and the contents appears on the screen in the described format. Delete a file: If you want to delete data in the configuration memory of the AirLaser for instance that the data are no longer required or they are secured through a download on a computer in the network it can be done with two modes: - With the radio buttons you can choose the file to be deleted in the selection mode. A click on the Delete-button removes the file after a security request irrecoverably from the memory. - In the View-mode (the contents will be displayed with the view-button) another delete option is offered. This procedure will also delete the file irrecoverably after a security request. After that the system switches automatically into the selection mode where you can choose a new file.

4.8

SNTP (Simple Network Time Protocol) Configuration

For logging and monitoring the AirLaser uses an internal system time. The configuration is done by the SNTP Configuration. Normally the setup of time and date should be performed automatically by an SNTP server integrated in your network and accessable for the AirLaser. If there is no time server or you do not wish to execute this function, you may setup the time manually, too.

40

AirLaser manual Systemtime (Orange => Read Only): Here you will find the actual local time of the system, which is used for generating the eventlog files or an entry into this files. UTC (Coordinated Universal Time)-Offset: If required you may define the difference of the local time zone to the UTC. For Germany you should fill in +1 (CET = Central European Time respectively MEWT = Middle European Winter Time). Enable: Activates the automatic time adjustment at the server defined under Host. Host: At this point you define the timer server, which responds to SNTP requests at port 123. If you enter a name and not an IP-address, you have to configure at least one DNS server at the IP Configuration (see chapter 4.4, page 26). Interval (Sync every ...): Configure the time in seconds, which should elapse until the next syncronization. The value has to be larger than 60! Manualy adjust: Here you may fill in the local time for the AirLaser system manualy, if the automatic time adjust is no activated. Via the Set Time-button you assign the values of Year, Month, Day, Hour, Min and Sec to the AirLaser.

4.9

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) Configuration

If desired, the AirLaser can inform the responsible administrator in case a special event occurs. You may configure up to four e-mail addresses at SMTP Configuration.

System Name and domain name please do not use umlauts as ",,,,," or 41

AirLaser manual "". Enable: With selection in this field you activate the dispatch of the AirLaser messages to this address. SMTP Server: Fill in the mail gateway. If you enter a name, you have to configure at least one DNS server at the IP Configuration. As far as we know all SMTP server need no authentification of the user by user name and password for sending out an e-mail! User (not supported right now): If in the future the AirLaser has to authenticate himself to the mail-server, you need to fill in the Account Name into this field. Password (not supported right now): If in the future the AirLaser has to authenticate itself to the mail-server, you need to fill in corresponding password into this field. Address: Here you fill in the e-mail address to which the message should be sent. System Name (mandatory for sending out the e-mails!): The name of the system is identical with the defined name at the System Identification page. If you change the System Name on this page, it will be changed automatically also on the System Identification page! Domain (mandatory for sending out the e-mails!): Here you define the domain in which the AirLaser is located!

4.10 Update of the management-software and the firmware

To keep the AirLaser IP1000 system technically up to date and to effect adoptions of the management software and the firmware, all units of the AirLaser IP1000 series with management include corresponding update features. This makes the AirLaser IP1000 a future-proof system that can be easily adapted to your needs and with new features the adoption to coming standards of data transfer will be quick to realize.

4.10.1 Background: Update-Process

The AirLaser uses its own operating system that provides all functions for an SNMP or web based Management and which represents the interface to the most important internal parameters. For higher security level and more availability two software partitions are included - each of them equipped with an operative version of the currently actual software version. One of them functions as the active partition, the other as a standby partition that can manually be switched to the active partition in case of system errors. 42

AirLaser manual A successful update takes place in several steps. In the first step a software image is being uploaded from a specific FTP-server into the standby partition. In addition to the complete operation system this software image contains also the management software, the web-server and the firmware for the programmable logic of the AirLaser IP1000. After the download the "Reset and swap"-button (placed on the download page) starts the new software. While booting the new software the systems checks the compatibility of each software component with the available hard- and firmware. Necessary updates of the firmware result automatically as well as a required system reset. The AirLaser functions as usual right after rebooting.

4.10.2 Download page: Updating the AirLaser IP1000

Login to the Web-based management with read-/write-access. Change to the submenu Download (left menu)

Software-Images (READ ONLY): - Active: Indicates the active software version including the revision number.
-

Standby: The above described second partition in which a further software image may be embedded. An update is generally being installed in this partition. Only by pressing the "Reset with swap" button the software image is being booted in the standby partition. The active partition becomes the new standby partition.

Update Status (READ ONLY):

Now the update of the soft- and firmware of the AirLaser is completed.

4.11 Management access with VLAN networks 4.11.1 Configuration

The two management ports of the AirLaser IP1000 (F2: 100BaseFX and PT1: 10/100BaseT(X)) can support port based VLAN.

4.11.2 When do I have to activate the VLAN support?

Management Port: The VLAN support needs to be activated as soon as VLAN packets are to be transferred to the management. If the VLAN support is not active, the management is not accessible and the AirLaser cannot be configured and controlled via Ethernet! The following steps configure the VLAN: Log in to the web-based management of the AirLaser with read/write access. Enter the IP configuration page. On this page you will also find the options for the configuration of the VLAN settings.

44

AirLaser manual VLAN-Enable: Switch on the VLAN option by mouse click the corresponding box is marked. By activation the VLAN tag of all incoming Ethernet packets will be removed at the internal management port. Outbound packets will be provided with a VLAN tag with the adjusted ID automatically. VLAN-ID: At this position you may adjust the identifier for the VLAN by which the management is supposed to be effected. Adjustable Identifiers: 0 to 4094 (decimal diction). "0" has a special function: it switches the VLAN functionality off. VLAN packets will then only be transmitted corresponding to the VLAN-priority. VLAN-IDs for the management port and the TP1 port are identical and adjustable only via the management port (green frame).

Twisted Pair Port (TP1): access. Data Port: Service Port:

The twisted pair port can be configured as a service port for management Only VLAN-tagged packets will be accepted. Check service port, if you want to have access to management with a service computer.

4.11.3 Availability of the management

Also in VLAN networks the management needs to be available at any time. Therefore all Ethernet packets that are sent by the management are automatically marked with priority 7 (highest priority). This results in a prior transport of these packets within the network and in a prompt processing of management requests.

4.11.4 Setting the system to factory default

In the case that the access to the management should be denied in cause of an incorrect VLAN configuration the AirLaser may be reset to the factory VLAN default settings. Proceed as follows: Keep the heating mode button pressed (page 9, no. 13) Press simultaneously the reset button (see page 9, no. 9) of the application interface. After a few seconds every other LED of the level indicator flashes. Release the heating mode button. All configured VLAN settings are now erased and the factory default settings are recovered. The factory default settings are indicated in detail in Appendix D.

4.13 System Identification

The orange framed fields will be filled-in by the system itself, the green framed fields Local/Remote System Name und Local/Remote Location Address can be accessed and should be completed by you. Note: Please, do not use umlauts (,,,,,) and no for the system- and the name of the city!

In the Extended System Identification you will find all serial numbers of the integrated modules and functional units as well as, denpending on the module and the unit, the revision of the hard-, soft- and firmware. All information will be 47

AirLaser manual displayed automatically by the management system and is READ ONLY (orange frames as indicators!).

5 SNMP for AirLaser Management

Beside the Web-based management with integrated Web server the AirLaser family provides you with a SNMP-agent. By this the configuration and the faultand performance management will be accessible by SNMP compatible management platforms like HP-OpenView, Castlerocks SNMPc or Tivoli. The SNMP agent provides you with a lot of actual parameters and tables. Changes of status and problems will be sent to up to three management servers (trap destinations, chapter 4.3 page 28) via SNMP traps. The SMP agent supports the version SNMPv1 of the SNMP protocol. All information, which is provided by the agent, is defined in the Management Information Base (MIB). This MIBD is scope of delivery and has the MIB ID 2800.

6 Trouble shooting
6.1 Inspection and replacement of fuses
The fuses are located directly under the green voltage feed plug on the left side of the control panel and in the fuse holder in the AirLaser power supply.

Indication:

Replacement inside the AirLaser: Remove the control panel cover by opening the knurled screw at the base of the cover pane. Unplug the voltage feed plug! Remove the fuse insertion. Replace the fuses (250 V/1,6 A delay fuse!). Reposition the fuse module into the AirLaser until it snaps in. Reposition the plugs into the socket. The AirLaser performs an automatic selftest while booting. Check the configuration. Close the control panel cover and tighten the knurled screw.

Replacement inside the power supply: Open the power supply by unscrewing the four screws in the cover. The 230 V-AC-connection is located on the right side. Unscrew the cap and replace the fuse: 250 V, 3.15 A, delay fuse. F2 (left side inside the power supply) secures the 48 V DC-supply line. Unscrew the cap and replace the fuse link: 250 V, 2.0 A, delay fuse. Check the tight fit of the cap and reposition the cover. Make sure that no wires are being jammed! Fix the cover with the screws.

49

AirLaser manual

7 Service
In principle the AirLaser IP1000 is maintenance-free. Recommendation: Depending on the influence of the local environment, you should clean the front screens once or twice a year. Then check the optical reception level of the stations. Compare the values that occur on the reception level display under normal weather conditions with the values achieved during installation (v. entries on page 15 respectively 19 without power supply). If the reception level is more than two bars lower than the value achieved during installation, then you should check the alignment of the stations (v. page 18).

8 Repair and Disposal

Only the manufacturer may repair the system. For this reason the stations are sealed. Please note: Your warranty expires by damaging the seals or opening the stations! Further on the manufacturer guarantees to take back the systems and dispose them properly.

9 Terms of warranty
In addition to the legal guarantee requirements, the manufacturer guarantees to remedy deficiencies in the stations in accordance with the General Business Conditions of the CBL GmbH company within a period of twelve months following the date of purchase. This guarantee only applies, if the units have not been opened, i. e. that the seals are not broken.
