Divine Pronouns

There are three levels at which the initiate experiences God. On the first level of awakening God is experienced as He. The initiate juxtaposes himself or herself to this august being as a slave (actually initiate or apprentice), servant, beloved or friend. The Sufis yogic Bakhtis and other devotees (like the milkmaids who were lovers of Krishna) are examples of lovers of Him. Nuns and some monks fall into that category too. A little higher than a devoted lover is one who becomes a friend of God. Abraham was said to be Khalil-Allah, i.e., friend of God. On the next level of experience the initiate experiences himself as a co-creator with God and relates to God as We. Such a one recognizes his or her relationship in and with God and is inseparable from God as a drop of water is composed of, contributes to and is inseparable from the ocean. For in him we live, and move, and have our being. -- Acts 17:28 When the initiate at the We level hears let us make man or surely We created man, he remembers that he has a duty to continue and promote the ongoing creation of the prophetic and divine man. For creation is an ongoing process.

At a certain point the initiate is fully absorbed. No trace of her mortal identification remains. There is no place where she ends and God begins. For such a one, I and the father are one. At that point she has no will. Gods will is her will. Having fully surrendered her personal will to the divine will, only now is she really a Muslim, i.e., one who has surrendered her will to the will of God and thereby attains unshakable inner peace. For such a one God ceases to be experienced as He or even We for there is no other, there is only God. For such a one, God becomes I. When certain Sufis identified themselves as Who They Really Were (God), immature people who thought they were Muslims but werent even close killed the Sufis on the charge of blasphemy. The great Sufis, knowing they could not possibly ever really be killed, allowed the immature ones to strike down the bodies. All that did to the Sufis was to liberate them, to release them from the prison of their bodies.
