Getting Keryx
26 1 04 2011 11:02
http://keryxproject.org/tutorial/
Grab Keryx from the Download page and extract it to your ash drive.
Starting Keryx
On Linux
Linux: Navigate to the keryx/linux directory on your ash drive and double-click the keryx icon.
On Windows
Windows: Navigate to the keryx/win32 directory on your ash drive and double-click the keryx or keryx.exe icon.
From Source
OSX: You will need to install GTK-OSX and wxPython on OSX. You can then run keryx/source/keryx.py If you are running Keryx on an Ubuntu installation older that 8.10, you will not be able to use the Linux executable. Instead, follow the instructions for running from source (on the Wiki).
Creating a Project
New projects MUST be created on your oine computer!! After starting Keryx, enter the name of your project (or leave the default) and click New Project. Alternatively you can see if a pre-made project has been contributed on the forums.
When asked whether you would like to download the latest package lists, choose No, then exit Keryx.
Opening a Project
26 2 04 2011 11:02
http://keryxproject.org/tutorial/
Start Keryx and choose your project from the bottom drop-down menu. Then click Open Project.
If you would like to have the latest packages available for download, choose Yes when prompted whether to download latest package lists (recommended).
Installing Packages
Open your project and select Install Packages from the Project menu. Check all the packages you want to install and click Continue.
A terminal will display the progress of package installation. After installation is complete, press ENTER.

So that Keryx will know that you have installed new packages, you should now update the project status (Project > Update Status). For a more detailed, step-by-step tutorial, see the one on crashsystems.net.

It should work on 11.10. I'm also in the process of building a new version that should simplify things for 11.10.

work. This is what I hope your application will accomplish in a future version. 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) 8) 9) I install a computer with internet access; I load it with all the stu I need (extra-repositories and packages); I install KERYX and take a snapshot of my brand-new machine; After that I deploy my machine somewhere without an internet access; I go back to my den and download on KERYX proles' directory the stu from my machine; Sometimes after, I feel I have to apply upgrades to my remote deployed machine; I re KERYX and tell it to download update repositories and upgraded packages; I put them on my usb-thumb drive and bring to the oine machine; KERYX starts the upgrade process.

If you go to the PPA's page, you can click on the green link that says "Technical details about this PPA." That will give you the lines that you need to add to your sources.list le inside your project folder. Then just refresh the package lists in Keryx and you should be good.

1) Download Keryx onto an online machine, and save the application to your local disk/external device/both. Get a snapshot of the oine machine: 2) Dis-connect and transfer the external device to the oine machine, and launch the application from the external device ... OR , transfer the application to the local device of the oine machine, and launch the application there. 3) Take a snapshot of the [repository] of the oine machine, and transfer the shapshot to ? folder of the external device. Return to the online machine... 4) Return the external device to the online machine, and: a) Transfer the snapshot of the oine machine to the appropriate folder in the application of the online machine, and launch the application in the online machine ... OR b) Leave the snapshot of the oine machine in its' place on the external device, and launch the application FROM the external device. 6) Once the application is launched, select the appropriate interface control [???], to update the snapshot of the oine machine. The update packages will download to the (application folder of the online machine?/application folder on the external device?). If the downloaded packages download to the application folder of the online machine, they will have to be transferred to the appropriate folder on the external device. Return to the oine machine: 7) Connect the external (updated) device to the oine machine, and launch the application (from the external device?)(from the oine machine?). 8) Execute the update function, being sure to have the downloaded packages, as well as the originally installed repo accessible to the application. Step 7 lends to MANY questions, depending on from WHERE the application is launched). These steps make no address of getting non-default packages downloaded and installed.

I'm sorry you're having a lot of trouble with this. Step 7 can be any install of Keryx to open the prole and install the packages, or you can simply plug in the ash drive with the packages to the oine machine and install with Synaptic. The whole process is quite confusing because ubuntu no longer allows you to execute programs from the ash drive. I'm very busy with the last month of college so I can't take a whole lot of time to provide support. :( I wish you luck getting software installed on your oine machine though! Sorry I couldn't be more helpful!

The Keryx 1.0 interface will help you through that. A prole is a snapshot of your oine machine. So you need to start Keryx and follow the instructions on the interface to create a prole. After that, you take Keryx to an online machine along with that prole and open it there.

Make sure that you are running Keryx on your oine machine. If you install it with the deb package, it will be added to the System menu, or if you run it from source, just double click on bin/keryx.py. When the interface comes up, you create the prole there.

All you have to do is click the "Manage" button after you give it a name. You don't have to open it because Keryx needs internet for that part. The project will be stored in your home directory if you installed using the deb, otherwise it will be on the ash drive if you are using the keryx.py le. Copy it to your ash drive and either choose it from the list or browse on the online machine and you should be good to go.

Sure. On your online machine (I'm assuming Windows, if it is Ubuntu, you can just install the deb on there, or go directly to using the source), you'll need Python and PyGTK installed. These two les (install Python rst): http://www.python.org/ftp/pyth... http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME... You'll need the Keryx source ( http://launchpad.net/keryx/sta... ) after you have installed Python and PyGTK so that you can run it on the online machine. Double click the "bin/keryx.py" le ( the keryx.py in the bin folder ) and it will start on your new machine. You can then browse to your folder then and open up Proles, and the one you created should be listed. From there it will download the package lists, show you the list of software you can install and you can search for GParted, etc. To install, you can take the ash drive back home and either open the project up again with Keryx on the oine machine, or you can open Synaptic and click File->Add downloaded packages to have Synaptic install them. If you're just looking for GParted though, you should try using the Ubuntu CD to install that from. It comes on the LiveCD so you can actually add the CD to your oine machine and install it from there without Keryx or the internet.

Yes, I was hoping to clarify the concept of a prole because Keryx needs a snapshot of your oine machine (now called a "prole" instead of a "project"). I'm not sure why Keryx would have started downloading package lists unless you had opened a prole somehow. Try using the interface to download a premade project (if you have 10.04 or 10.10) and skip creating the prole on the oine machine if that makes it easier for you.

Creating a project happens on your oine machine. Keryx needs a snapshot of the oine computer before it can do its work online. The error given in 0.92 isn't helpful I realize, but 1.0 hopefully xes that. Keryx 1.0 is a complete rewrite and makes it a lot simpler to use but you need to copy the project to a ash drive or you can download a premade project using the interface.

I apologize for the poor instructions. School started and I have run out of time to work on Keryx for a while. Creating a project takes a snapshot of your oine computer. Opening a project loads up that snapshot and downloads the lists of packages you have available. This needs to be done online. Installing packages that you downloaded in the previous step can be installed various ways on your oine machine, and it's probably best if you use Synaptic => File => Add Downloaded Packages to do so. Keryx's installation method works, but it might not be the most stable. Mind you, Keryx is still very much a work in progress, but it should at least be a good start. :-)

Keryx only works with Debian and Ubuntu derivatives. If it Slitaz uses APT for package management, then you should be able to use Keryx for it, otherwise I'm afraid not.

10.10 won't let you run executables from ash drives anymore. It looks like you might be trying to do that. This is something we can't really x, but if you copy Keryx onto your Desktop and run it from there, you should be okay.

What the error is saying is that you are trying to create an Ubuntu Keryx project on your Windows machine. So what you need to do is run Keryx on Ubuntu rst and create the project; then take Keryx to your Windows 7 machine to open the project and download packages.

It's likely that Keryx missed a dependency and apt refuses to install because it is not there. You can copy the lists in the project folder over to /var/lib/apt/lists and the packages over to /var/cache/apt/archives, run "sudo apt-cache gencaches" and then "sudo apt-get install <package names="">" in terminal to

install what Keryx downloaded. If anything goes wrong, you'll see the error which should indicate the missing package(s). We're working on a better installation method, and calculating dependencies to be more accurate for v1.0 but it may take some time due to other engagements in school and work for most of our development team.</package>

Yes, you should overwrite them. Apt will notice that they have changed and re-read them.

I think the apt-get install thing didn't work because the comment ended up being weirdly formatted. What I meant to say was that your command should have looked similar to this, replacing the package names after "install" with the ones you chose. sudo apt-get install pidgin xchat 3dchess You'd replace those 3 package names with whatever you chose to install, but it's probably easier for most people to use Synaptic to install instead of Terminal anyways.

Any way to disable the automatic text at the end? Just a bit confusing. Also, was the command I posted above formatted correctly?

I think it's just something that Disqus does for comments. Weird formatting thing they do apparently. You can see my previous reply for an example. You just list the package names space separated instead. I've use apt-get install too much that I tend to assume people are familiar with it hehe :P

Hey Enavseo, so it seems that the issue is caused from using the dierent 32 and 64 bit builds. I think that we only built 32 bit ones and after testing, had no problems. It seems that some people are having issue with them. I've actually quit working on the current version because Keryx v1.0 is almost ready and should be done within the month! :D This new version I will have everything tested out, and dierent versions built so that we can handle this issue properly. If you want to read a little more on the issue, you can read this little article I wrote on it: http://excid3.com /blog/2010/06...

Try running Keryx from keryx.py in the source folder instead. The problem is that we haven't released our Linux 64bit binary yet (had some issues) but it works ne from source.

Are you using a specic locale or anything? I've never come across this error before and Googling around didn't nd me much either. What servers are you using? 32 bit or 64 bit? Anything other errors or unique things about your environment you are running this on?

From what I can tell so far since I got the problem, it appears to be something wrong with our binary code. Seems like running from source doesn't have any trouble but once it's compiled there are unexpected problems. Someone else today mentioned the issue to me so hopefully I can get this gured out quickly.

Hmmm, double checked and it runs ne on my 64bit Win7. Do you happen to have admin permissions? If so you could try running Keryx from source (source/keryx.py) after installing Python 2.5 and wxPython (for version 2.5). If you do that, then whatever error is causing Keryx to crash will show and we can gure out how to x it for you.

Raymond, you'll have to create your project on the Debian machine. If keryx won't start, try running it in the terminal so you can see any errors. Then post the errors here, on the forums, or report a bug on Launchpad.
