Brochure
Description: A brochure for a company that is a full-color, folding brochure that will promote the company product, service, or location. Date: 3/28/2013 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Visual Media Section 02 Caryn Esplin Program(s)/Tools: Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop Objectives: Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images. Process: I used the offset fold in Adobe InDesign. I used the layout that we had used for our activity. I first created the logo for the company that I was going to do the brochure on, which is a zoo. I just did a simple text box in InDesign with a dotted line in between the words. Next I went on Google to find the images that I wanted. I knew which types of animals I wanted to put into the brochure, so I just searched for that animal along with the Hogle Zoo. I was able to find good pictures of all of the animals that I wanted, except a tiger. I went to the Hogle Zoo a couple of years ago with my family and I had a good picture of a tiger so I used my own photo for that. But the rest were all found online. I placed the four images on the side. Then I opened the snake, lion, and elephant in Photoshop and used the quick selection to remove the background of the images. I then used the refine mask dialogue box to smooth the edges. I then placed those images in my InDesign document. With the lion I used the text wrap option to wrap around my text around the right side of the image. I did think about inverting the colors so that it would be white on black instead of black on white, but then I decided that a zoo is not dark and black. It is a fun and open place, so I decided to just keep the white background. I got the text from the zoos actual website, but I paraphrased it so that it would be my own words. But I did copy their hours and prices.

Logos
Description: Three, completely different, variations for a company/individual. Date: 2/23/2013 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Visual Media Section 02 Caryn Esplin Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Illustrator Objectives: Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image using the basic tools of Illustrator. Process: For the first logo I used the ellipse shape tool while holding down the shift key to create two different circles to create the shape for the pizza. Then I used pen tool to create a path for the text to go on. I used the arc tool to create a ring shape to go around the pizza. For the second logo I used the brush tool and chose the charcoal-feather option to create a cool line. Then I just copied and pasted that line so that the other one would be identical, except I rotated the second one to where I wanted it to be. For the third logo I used the polygon shape tool to create the triangle for a piece of pizza. Then I used the ellipse shape tool while holding down the shift key to create little circles for the pepperoni.

Montage
Description: A new and fresh inspirational poster using a composite of images and type. Date: 2/15/2013 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Visual Media Section 02 Caryn Esplin Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Photoshop Objectives: Learn to manage Photoshop layers and how to blend images together smoothly, using masks. Apply appropriate typography and also use filters. Process: First I found two images that I liked on the internet. Then I cropped the image to 8.5X11. I used the photo of the girl as the background and added another layer with the photo of the sun rays and added a mask. With the brush tool and a 100% opacity, I softened the hard edges. Then I used a larger brush at 30% opacity to blend the sun rays into the girls face. I put a paint daubs filter on the sun rays layer. I added some type on another layer on top.

Flier
Description: Black and white promotional flier for a graduate leadership conference. Date: 1/26/2013 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Visual Media Section 02 Caryn Esplin Program(s)/Tools: Adobe InDesign Objectives: Use the design principles, basic InDesign skills, and also appropriate typography to create an appealing layout for a flier. Process: I first created four different sketches of my layout. Then I made a draft of one of my designs in InDesign. I used a black box with white text on it a few times to emphasize important details and also to create repetition and also contrast. I made one of the words bigger in the title to make a good focal point. I created some white space so that the flier was not too busy.

Imaging
Description: Editing a good quality image in Photoshop using basic edits and cropping and sizing the image. Date: 2/08/2013 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Visual Media Section 02 Caryn Esplin Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Photoshop Objectives: Learn basic photography skills by using a digital camera to take a quality image. Then size and crop the image and adjust the brightness, contrast, hue, and saturation levels of the image. Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image. Desaturate the selected portion of the image and then use a filter or colorize a portion of the image. Process: I went to Porter Park and took some photos of the slides and other toys with my camera. I decided which one I liked the best and then I cropped it to a 6X6 image in Photoshop. I used the quick selection tool to select the part of my image that I wanted to brighten up. Then I reversed the selection and changed the saturation. Then I went into filters and added a rough pastel filter and played with the settings on that until I got it to where I liked.

event ad
Description: A color full-bleed event ad to promote a bake sale fundraiser using only Microsoft Word and a scanner. Date: 2/02/2013 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Visual Media Section 02 Caryn Esplin Program(s)/Tools: Microsoft Word Epson Scanner PDF2JPG.net (PDF converter) Objectives: Find, scan and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design and use text boxes for layout in Word. Also insert and edit the images in Word. Process: I scanned the image and then used a Word image effect and deleted most of the background. I then added a box on the left side of the page and used the magnify tool under more colors to make it the same color as the raspberries. I made three texts boxes and made the text the same color as the raspberries and the roll.

Business Card
Description: A business card with original logo that fits the personality of the group it will be representing. Date: 3/02/2013 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Visual Media Section 02 Caryn Esplin Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign Objectives: Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Design consistent layouts for a business card. Use the basic tools of Illustrator and InDesign. Process: I started out by creating a logo in Illustrator. I put a spatter filter on the CC part of the text. Then I created a rectangle and put the remaining text on top of that rectangle. Then I used the free transform tool to stretch the text so that it filled the entire area of the rectangle. Next I created the horseshoes by using the type tool and typing C and then I rotated it so that it wouldnt be straight. Then I changed the color to black and added a very small amount of spatter filter. I then created my business card. I first used the rectangle tool to create the outline of my business card. Then I placed the logo on the top left corner and again put a line behind the lower text like I did with the letterhead. I copied and pasted the contact information and put it on the right side and positioned it where I wanted it to be.

Next I created the horseshoes by using the type tool and typing C and then I rotated it so that it wouldnt be straight. Then I changed the color to black and added a very small amount of spatter filter. I decided to make the letterhead the first page. I placed the logo on the lop left corner of my letterhead. I then created a horizontal line using the same color from the logo to keep the repetition of the color. I sent it to the back to make sure that the other box from the logo was a covered. I then copied that line that rotated and put it on the left side of the page. I then created two text boxes and typed in the correct information and positioned them where I wanted them to be.

Web page
Description: A web page of a logo with a description of the design process that demonstrates basic HTML and CSS skills. Date: 03/14/2013 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Visual Media Section 02 Caryn Esplin Program(s)/Tools: Notepad++ and Adobe Photoshop Objectives: Size and optimize and original logo as a .png for a web page. Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to the target audience. Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and content. Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic understanding of CSS. Identify hex colors for web design. Process: I created this web page using only Notepad++. Before this project I had never worked with HTML or CSS. After I inserted my image and put in the content that I wanted, I attached a CSS document that was pre-made to my HTML. I then used the eyedropper tool in Photoshop to get the hex codes from my logo to change the colors in the CSS. I also changed one of my fonts to Rockwell Extra Bold so that it would match my logo for that repetition. I added some backup fonts just in case the viewers browser didnt have the fonts. I also changed the margin of the image so that it would be centered on the webpage
