A wastepicking group has organized and is building a recycling business called Luz work in the dumpsite alongside their mothers.

The group needs to build a school and wants to make it an integral part of their community. A safe, beautiful, and environmentally sensitive school, designed and built in partnership with the community will provide education for their children as well as a meeting space for the community.

Caroline James, M.Arch Candidate, GSD, (caroline.amory@gmail.com) Caroline has a background in architecture and design with strong interests in community participation. She eager to apply her academic research to a real project. Amaia Puras, MDesS Candidate, GSD, (apuras@gsd.harvard.edu) Amaia is a registered architect from Spain with building experience and in-depth research on energy and daylighting. Tian Ren, M.Arch Candidate, GSD (rentian2007@gmail.com) Tian has hands-on experience in building such as the Sukkah Pavilion at the GSD. Michelle Oliver, B.A. Candidate, Wellesley/MIT, (poliverg@wellesley.edu) Michelle is studying towards a Bachelors in Architecture. She is a native to Nicaragua thus carries a knowledge and about the culture and contemporary context. Timur Dogan, BT PhD Candidate, MIT, (tkdogan@mit.edu) Timur has extensive experience working with passive energy design. He will serve as the primary consultant for animation and testing of differing design models. Karina Silvester, M. Arch Candidate, MIT, (klsilves@mit.edu) Karina has a strong background in culturally specific architecture. She strives to find low tech and passive solutions for solving problems for low-income communities.
