protecting your iPhone from being lost or stolen
some solutions to common problems.

When using Safari you can quickly scroll to the top of any page by tapping the Status
bar where the time is displayed.

- Automat|ca||y f||| |n forms
Safari can fill in form fields for you on some websites.
To Enable this navigate to "Settings" > "Safari" > "AutoFill"
and enable the option "Use Contact Info".

If there is an account you use often ad this details to a new contact.

- kemember names and passwords on||ne
Safari on the iPhone is able to remember usernames and passwords for websites
that you log into. Unfortuntely not all websites are created correctly (according to
standards that are clearly defined but often ignored) so dont worry if you only seem
to get the option on some websites.

- Save an |mage |n Safar|
To Save an image simply press and hold on an image in any webpage and a menu
will appear

- rev|ew a web ||nk
By holding down the link on in Mail or Safari you can get information about a link
before visiting it.
You can also copy the link or in Safari open it in a new Tab.

- Add Webpage ||nk to nome Screen
To access a website quickly you can create a shortcut on your iPhone Home
screens.
When on a website, tap the "+" button and then the button "Add to Home Screen"
Copyright 2010 Louis Slabbert http://www.iPhoneTutorialVideos.com

Doing this will create a Thumbnail on your iPhone home screen for quick access to
the website.
Website Developers note: If you own/create/manage a website, make sure you
create a favicon.ico because
it will be used by default for the home screen icon.
- Doma|n name auto comp|et|on
In Safari Browser, if you wish to visit a website ending with .com,
just enter the domain name such as iPhoneTutorialVideos
without the www or .com and press "Go"
Safari will auto complete the www and .com for you.

Auto-complete other .net and other Domains

For .net domains just type in the domain name such as fancydresscostumes.net
without the www.

For other Country specific domains simply hold down the .com button and you'll be
presented with options relevant to your area of the world.
-Extremely fast web browsing
If you are on a slow connection and really just need to see some information you
can browse the net without
loading any graphics

You can visit and Bookmark: http://www.google.com/gwt/n and see the website
without any flash, graphics or distractions.

Incidentally using the Google.com/gwt websites is great if you want to check your
Search Engine Optimization of your personal or company website because it shows
your how Google sees your website.

- D|sab|e keyboard sounds
I would bet that most people would disable the sound that their computer's keyboard
makes if they could (sadly only earplugs will work on your home computer)
On the iPhone however it's easy to disable the Keyboard Clicking Sound
Navigate to "General">"Sounds" and turn off "Keyboard Clicks"

Copyright 2010 Louis Slabbert http://www.iPhoneTutorialVideos.com

- D|sab|e Sent Ma|| Sound
If you are at work and sending a couple of emails from your iPhone it could get a bit
annoying after a while.
Disable the sound under "Settings" >" Sounds" > "Sent Mail"

Copyright 2010 Louis Slabbert http://www.iPhoneTutorialVideos.com

- 1ra|n or D|sab|e autocorrect when typ|ng
The Autocorrect feature is great but needs some help to become a good allie

If you have to type acronyms or unusual names often, make sure you close down
the suggested correction the Autocorrect feature suggests. Do this a few times and
the Phone would have learnt a new word that you can type without being corrected.
If you are multi-lingual and type in a different language frequently you could change
keyboard under "Settings" >"General">"Keyboard">"International Keyboards" and
add a supported keyboard.

If however you need to type in say "Afrikaans" the iPhone as yet don't support that
dictionary, so with auto correct turned on your words get corrected all the time and
gets annoying.
To completely disable AutoCorrection navigate to "Settings">"General">"Keyboard"
and switch "Auto-Correction" to OFF
PS: My South African friends have thanked me for this tip.

Unlike any other mobile phone before the iPhone was launched with the ability to
take a screenshot of whatever is on your screen.

Why is this awesome?

Because this enables you to:
Take a screenshot of a Video Call
Take a screenshot of a Game HighScore to show your friends
Take a screenshot of a website you visited

Get an |hone4 Case for free
The iPhone 4 came with an improved antenna which was great, except that they
gave every tester a free iPhone case.
This prevented Apple from realising a design flaw which meant you would actually
short circuit two antenna's in the phone if gripped tightly without a case for a period
of about 20 seconds.
Apple's remedy to this was to provide an iPhone 4 case for free.

Apple also created an iPhone Case App, which allows you to select which case you
want, login with your iTunes account on the phone, and get it ordered right there and
then.

This might not be around for long however as there are rumours that Apple will stop
the free case program end of Sept 2010.

You can also get some great iPhone Cases. Some of which I've reviewed on

Incidentally you can also register any other valuable gadgets you might own.
They will walk you through all the details on how to get the serial.

When police recover items that they believe are stolen, they check the immobilise
database to see if anyone own the item, or whether it has been reported stolen.
Your lost phone might only be a phone call away.

Get your |ost |hone returned to you (my techn|que)

Make sure people will contact you when you misplace your iPhone.
I use an app called "If Found" which actually helped me recover my first iPhone.
(My Girlfriend says her kind text messages to the iPhone was the reason it got
returned though)
The "If found" app allows you to write an alternative contact number or email and
then create an image to display on the phone while the screen is locked.
Thereby if your phone is picked up by someone, the person will know who to contact
to return it. Contrary to popular belief there are more than enough good people in the
world

now to kecover your |ost |hone
Apple provides a paid service called Find my iPhone which is part of their yearly
subscription of MobileMe.

To see where you have misplaced your iPhone you can login to
me.com and click Find my iPhone, or if someone else you know have an iPhone you
can download the free"Find my iPhone" app and see it's location.
You can also send out a message and an audio alarm to the phone, if you think it
might have just fallen under a seat somewhere in the house.

Before locking your iPhone (pressing the top lock button) make sure that you press
the home Button. This will close down any app running in the foreground and thus
use a lot less resources even if it continues to run some functions in the background.
You can now press the lock button.

C|ose unneeded apps runn|ng |n the background
With iOs4 Apple introduced Multitasking which is great when you are actively
changing in between apps to copy and paste and be productive. It however affects
the battery because of the apps running in the background still using power.

By default the iPhone displays our text messages even when your phone is locked.
This is a convenience, however not always appropriate for those unintended text
messages.
To Disable Text message Preview open up "Settings" then "Messaging" and turn off
"Show Preview"

Set a |ockscreen passcode for your |hone
If you have some private data or pictures which you don't want anyone to see easily,
and you don't want anyone to pick up your iphone and go through its contents it is
advised to setup a lockscreen passcode.
Open "Settings" > General > Passcode Lock >

Additionally you can set how long in-between using your iPhone that the lock will
activate. I prefer "After 5 minutes" as it is the least intrusive while still providing great
security.

Lrase a|| Data on your |hone |f |ost or se|||ng |t

If you are selling your iPhone or giving it as a gift you can securely remove all
data from the Phone quite easily.
I would suggest that you first sync with iTunes, and make sure you have copied your
Photo's from the iPhone.
Then Navigate to "Settings" > "General" > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings

You can let your iPhone Calendar App Remind you of the Birthdays of all your
contacts saved on your iPhone.
For this to work you obviously need to have your contact's Birthday saved in their
Contact's information. If you follow the Tip on Syncing contact information with
Facebook this will be a no-brainer.
Now open Calendar and tap the "Calendars" button. Under "Other" you will find a
Birthday Calendar which you can check or uncheck to enable or disable.

Sync your contacts w|th Iacebook

When Facebook just launched we all kinds of tricks to sync all your Facebook
contacts which involved Windows PCs running Microsoft Outlook and extra software
and hacks.
Luckily nowadays its as easy as downloading the Facebook App, opening it up and
pressing the Sync button.

There are many apps that allow you to stay in touch with your social network but Im
sure many of you have seen people typing on their iPhones while walking and nearly
hitting poles.
One of my favourite apps for connecting with my social groups online (while walking)
is at Once Not only does it provide you the ability to update Twitter, Facebook,
LinkedIn as well as other status which can be updated via email, it also turns on the
Camera and allows you to see where you are going (or continue to focus on a
speaker in a training event)

G|ve an |hone App as a g|ft

1) Send an iPhone App as a Gift
Open "App Sore" app and search for your an App that would suit as a great gift, then
scroll down to the bottom. You will find a "Gift this App" Button which allows you to
send the App as a gift to someone.

2) Authorize their computer to be able to run all the apps you've purchased
If it's your partner or a good friend that you see and you can visit them, log onto their
computer and login to iTunes using YOUR iTunes account.
To do this open iTunes,
Authorise their computer to be able to run ALL the Apps that YOU have purchased.
Please note this will only work 4 times as you are only able to authorise 5
computers.

Trust me you would NEVER need to do it as often as a Windows PC (*chuckle) but
99% of the time this is a good first try to resolve your problem

Apps crash|ng on |aunch
Not very often but for some strange reason it could happen that an iPhone app
doesn't start up anymore.
The solution I've found works best is to uninstall the app, install another free app,
then re-install the removed app.
Geeky Developers note: It seems the package manager doesn't always release
the lock on a lock file which causes this issue.

If you are experiencing a very slow connection, sometimes your iPhone just needs to
re-connect to the Wifi or Cellular tower.
The quickest way to do this is to turn on Airplane mode and turn it off again.

Geeky Developer note: Remember that network speed depends greatly on the
availability of Cellular data towers of your provider in the area.
