MCKENZIE Welcome to fundamental course.

MCKENZIE A design exhibit dedicated to and work of industrial designer Dieter Rams. We wanted to go in direction by taking the advice of Rams himself. Using his idea of representing his work by using only what is necessary.

ERICA We were inspired by the yellow button on the his calculator and decided to use this as inspiration for our vibrant color treatment.

ERICA Our monochromatic color palette, legible type, and image treatment allow for Rams work to speak for itself.

FIRST FLOOR // LAYOUT

MCKENZIE When walking through the gallery the viewer is fronted with bright yellow walls. Almost, overwhelming, but keeping the graphics to a minimal it still keeps the space open.

SECOND FLOOR // LAYOUT

MCKENZIE The viewer can continue on the journey of Rams work to the second floor as a continuation of the bottom, where the actual artifacts will be located. His products were for the people and so we felt that having the actual pieces would give the viewer even more context for his design.

ENTRANCE WALL // CONTEXT

ERICA As you will discover as we take you on this journey our design is bold, contrasting, and taking one from Rams himself, minimal.

CONTEXT

ERICA Walking in the space the viewer is greeted with the ten principles.

MAIN ROOM // CONTEXT

MCKENZIE He thought that his designs should modest and restrained. Our designs contrast that principle. We want the artifacts to be blown up on the walls.

CONTEXT

MCKENZIE We only used the keys words or phrases from his ten principles. Like innovative seen here. Each principle is paired with one of his products. He was ahead of his time and we wanted to really focus on his pieces that made him successful.

CONTEXT

MCKENZIE The graphic element of the the black line throughout the exhibit is the course to lead the viewer through the space. It links in different spots from wall to wall.

MAIN WALL // CONTEXT

MCKENZIE Having the pieces so large on the wall, we thought it would create an interesting interaction by turning the ipad into a viewfinder. We want them to interact with the ipad and find out more information about each piece.

606 Shelving System-1960

With its unobtrusive, pared-down silhouette, the 606 Shelving System Ramss less-is-more aesthetic when it was introduced in 1960. The modular system can be used as e ectively for a single shelf or an entire library, and has the key advantage of being designed aesthetically and practically to last, no matter the changing need or fashion. Through meticulous design and a carefully considered service o ering, obsolescence has e ectively been built out. Its ability to evolve and improve with the passage of time has demonstrated over the 50 years since its conception that this an investment as safe as houses. Safer, in fact, because you can take it with you when you move anywhere. 606 is a design classic by any standard: whether you use as a measure of that the fact that it has won numerous awards for design excellence, and is part of the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art in New York (among others); or whether the criteria is more the fact that it reaches such soaring heights while entirely transcending fashion. It doesnt change.

once the piece is fully scanned it redirects you to an informational screen showing you additional information as well as images. once the view is done, they would tap off of the information.

OUTSIDE BILLBOARD // CONTEXT

MCKENZIE The space outside is reminiscent of the inside, with the name, one of his products, and his name.
