NOWCastSAs mission is

to promote and facilitate an inclusive civic conversation.

NOWCastSA was founded as a nonprot organization to ll the need for meaningful local news and information with an online, neighbor-toneighbor network.

How NOWCastSA uses the Internet to reinvent local news:

NOWCastSA educates people about important local issues using articles, photos, slideshows, video and interactive maps. NOWCastSA uses live streaming webcasts to open the room at community events, making them accessible to anyone with an Internet connection. People who can't attend can still participate live, online, by watching, listening and asking questions from a mobile device or computer. NOWCastSA offers training for community journalists and teaches digital literacy and online communication. NOWCastSA is a grassroots project of Community Information Now (CI:Now), a collaboration formed to democratize data. NOWCastSA is made possible by underwriting, sponsorships, grants and donations from organizations and individuals like you!

Focus on Data
NOWCastSA believes that access to data and information is essential to a healthy democracy. It partners with NOWData to interpret and share information with people who are working to change their community for the better. Through collaborations and projects like the Eastside Promise and Wheatley Choice Neighborhoods, the State of Texas Children and the Bexar County Health Collaborative, NOWCastSA uses community engagement to connect people with information in new ways. Rather than giving a brief summary of events, it captures complete, unltered video and invites the public to join the conversation. Rather than telling stories, it links stories with data and encourages people to learn more and get involved.

Expanding the Room for Civic Events

NOWCastSA allows people to be two places at once with any Internet-connected computer, cell phone or mobile device. It makes local government t into anyones busy schedule through archived video that can be replayed later, and enables people to overcome barriers to civic engagement. It is like public television on the Internet, but it doesnt just show people what is going on: With the NOWCastSA platform, people can actually participate in events live as they are happening. Community Outreach and Education

NOWCastSA connects the community with resources online through its stories and interactive maps, showing parents where to go to get their kids vaccinated, free school supplies, summer-time out of school activities, free lunch programs and more. Staff attend community events like the Girls Inc. RockIt Into the Future Science Festival, Bark in the Park and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial March to teach people how to use media technology, such as how to take photos with a smartphone and post them to the web using free tools. Staff also teach free classes and workshops to groups on topics ranging from journalism basics (interviewing, storytelling, writing and editing) to video editing and photography, social media and mobile webcasting. NOWCastSA focuses on using free and low-cost applications and teach people how to best use the equipment they already have in new ways.
