BioLet Electric Models 10 Standard, 20 Deluxe, and 60 XL

BioLet Composting Toilets use the natural processes of evaporation and aerobic decomposition to transform human waste into a nutrient rich, hygienically safe product called humus. When you raise the upper seat on the toilet you will see a clam shell cover called the compost cover. This hides any waste from view while it is composting and automatically opens when the seat is depressed allowing the waste to be safely deposited into the compost chamber below. Inside the BioLet composting chamber is BioLet Starter Mix made from all natural ingredients including a base of peat moss and pine wood shavings. After use, a small amount of BioLet Starter Mix is added to the toilet and the upper seat is lowered. A mixer automatically begins to turn (20 Deluxe and 60 XL models) or you manually turn a T-Handle on the top of the unit (10 Standard) mixing the waste with the BioLet Starter Mix and aerating the material already inside the chamber. This process creates a mixture with all the components required to induce aerobic decomposition (carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and moisture). An electric fan located in the upper back of the toilet continuously draws air into the toilet, therefore, preventing any odors from escaping. It even removes most normal bathroom odors! The air is circulated through the unit and heated by a thermostatically controlled heater. The warm air evaporates the liquids in the toilet keeping the material inside at the proper moisture / carbon / nitrogen ratio for optimum decomposition. The moisture-laden air is then vented to the outdoors through a vent pipe running from the toilet to the outside of the structure where the toilet is housed. As usage continues the material will collect inside the compost chamber. When it reaches the upper leveling arm, its time to empty the tray in the bottom of the unit (once every two months to a year, depending on usage). Simply remove the thumbscrews from the door on the front of the unit, slide the tray out, and empty the dry, nutrient rich, ODORLESS humus. Optimally, the humus can be leached into the soil around decorative plants or mixed in with an outdoor compost pile.

BioLet Non-Electric Model 30 NE

If reliable power is not an option, the BioLet 30 NE is the way to go. Using a process known as batch composting, the BioLet 30 NE can handle a high volume of usage. Batch composting is a process where you collect a batch of material and then remove it from service so the material can compost without anything new being added to it. The BioLet 30 NE has a compost cover and ventilation pipes described in the previous models, but it works by applying a very different approach. Using the batch compost method, alternating bins are used to compost the material. One bin is placed in the toilet until it becomes 3/4 full, then it is removed outside for further composting and the alternative bin is placed in the unit in order to continue its operation. Air circulation through the unit occurs due to the natural convection of air through the ventilation pipe. This is induced by the heat that is produced by the composting process, temperature differentials between the inside and outside of the structure, and by the natural chimney effect created by the vent pipe. Installing an optional 12V DC fan into the vent pipe can induce additional circulation of air and increase the capacity of the unit.

With its advanced Swedish technology its easy to see that BioLet is the toilet of the 21st century.

BioLet Works with Nature

Nature does its own composting. In warm weather, natural soil microorganisms digest and transform leaves, grass and other organic debris into a hygienic, inoffensive soil component. This compost provides the nutrients for new plant growth and holds moisture in the soil. Gardeners around the world utilize this process when they compost kitchen and garden waste and use the compost as fertilizer. BioLet unites the natural composting process with advanced Swedish technology to accelerate and optimize biological decomposition, evaporate excess liquid and exhaust odors all within an elegant bathroom fixture that is easy to use, simple to install and economical to operate. 9

Eco Certification is intended to stimulate environmental concern in product development and promote a sustainable society. The testing of the BioLet 60 XL (Mulltoa 60) was comprised of both laboratory and field-testing. These evaluations were conducted by an independent and specifically selected test facility: The Norwegian Centre for Soil and Environmental Research at the University of Agriculture in Norway. This is the most extensive testing in the world and serves both as an environmental control as well as quality control. In the test, the criteria definition of a closed (self contained) toilet system is a toilet that is not connected to a drainage system for receiving faeces and urine. Criteria stated the toilet must handle waste from four people in a permanent use situation (with no drain installed). The end product must be safe and utilized as a means of soil improvement. Material Quality - Mechanical and electrical components, leak proof operation, ventilation, wear, etc. Odor - No odors indoors or outside on or near the ground. Maintenance - Must be hygienic and easy to service. Capacity & Performance - Toilet must handle waste from four people using the unit permanently and several periods of double usage. This usage is sustained for a long duration and the end product evaluated. Environment - The finished compost is tested to ensure it is hygienic to handle and environmentally safe. Limits are set pertaining to the allowable amounts of remaining bacteria, salts & nutrients. Bacteria, pH, nitrogen, odor and consistency are tested. Economy - The power usage must be within set parameters with a maximum of 320W.
