INTRO TO E.I.
WHAT IS E.Q.?
E.Q. is a measurement of emotional intelligence as I.Q. is an assessment of standard intelligence. Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to identify, assess, and control the emotions of oneself, of others, and of groups. Success and achievement in our modern connected world will be achieved by those with a high E.Q.

TO MASTER PEOPLE TAKES FORCE, BUT TO MASTER YOURSELF TAKES STRENGTH.

Lao Tzu said this over 2500 years ago and it remains true to this day. However, modern research has proven this is not just useful for personal development. There is a strong business case for Emotional Intelligence. Research by the Center for Creative Leadership has found that the primary causes of derailment in executives involve decits in emotional competence. The three primary ones are difculty in handling change, not being able to work well in a team, and poor interpersonal relations. When 515 senior executives were analyzed by the search rm Egon Zehnder International, those who were primarily strong in emotional intelligence were more likely

to succeed than those who were strongest in either relevant previous experience or IQ. In other words, emotional intelligence was a better predictor of success than either relevant previous experience or high IQ. These are just two examples of the signicant documentation that demonstrate how important EI is in the business world.

IT IS BETTER TO BE LOVED THEN BE FEARED

Although despots and tyrants might disagree, for the rest of us, success is the direct result of how well we can get people to like us. It is no mistake that like has become the way we show support on social media and elsewhere on the internet. Being liked as a universal need and public gures like the Dalai Lama have such a high EI they are beloved the world over.

YOU KNOW THAT HAPPY GUY WHO IS A TOTAL FAILURE?

Neither do we. Part of self management is the the ability to remain optimistic in the face of challenging situations. This does not mean you smile through your shortcomings, rather that you are able to move into difcult situations and remain self aware while you solve them. Ultimately, people who have a high EI maintain a positive attitude that draws people to them. This results in success in all areas of life, personal and professional.

In closing

INTRO TO E.I.
In closing, please note that emotional intelligence is a contemporary term for an old idea. Many ancient texts speak of self development and the entire personal growth eld as we know it today is based on self development to improve life conditions for an individual. EI has proven that business leaders need to consider how they treat their staff, their customers, and themselves if they want to succeed.
