Diesel Fire Pump Controllers

2002 Eaton Corporation. All rights reserved.

Operation

Diesel controllers monitor the fire sprinkler system pressure by means of a pressure transducer or pressure switch. Upon detecting a drop in system pressure, a start signal is sent to the engine, initiating its crank cycle.

Starting

The starting process can be initiated by causes other than a pressure drop, such as a signal from a Deluge Valve opening or a Remote Start pushbutton being activated.

Number & Capacity of Batteries

NFPA 20, Section 11.2.5.2.1

Each engine shall be provided with two storage battery units. At 4.5 degrees C (45 deg. F) - each battery unit shall have twice the capacity sufficient to maintain the cranking speed recommended by the engine manufacturer.

Crank Cycle

NFPA 20, Section 11.2.5.2.1

The attempt to start cycle shall be of a 3 minute duration - consisting of 15 seconds of cranking followed by 15 seconds of rest, in six consecutive cycles.

Stopping

There are 2 approved methods of stopping a diesel controller.

Manual Electric Shutdown Manual shutdown shall be accomplished by either of the following:

Operation of the main switch inside the controller. Operation of a stop button on the outside of the controller enclosure. (The stop button shall cause the engine to shutdown through the automatic circuits only if all starting causes have been returned to normal - ie: pressure rises above the start point.) The controller then returns to the full automatic position.

Stopping

Automatic Shutdown after Automatic Start.

There are several conditions that must be met for this method to be used. All starting causes must have returned to normal for a minimum of 30 minutes.

Stopping

Automatic Shutdown after Automatic Start.

The engine cannot shut down automatically on high water temp. or low oil pressure when any starting cause exists. If no other starting cause exists during engine test, shutdown is permitted.

Battery Chargers

NFPA 20, Section 8-2.5.2.4

There are several stringent requirements that Battery Chargers must meet under this section of the NFPA Code. This is an extensive section of the code - without properly charged batteries, there is no way to start the engine - hence . NO FIRE PROTECTION

Battery Chargers

NFPA 20, Section 11.2.5.2.4

Chargers shall be specifically listed for fire pump service. The rectifier shall be a semiconductor type.

Battery Chargers

NFPA 20, Section 11.2.5.2.4

When the battery (lead-acid type) reaches a fully charged condition, the charger must reduce the charging rate to less than 500mA. The charger must charge the battery without damaging it - and must restore the battery to 100% of reserve capacity within 24 hours.

Overpressure Requirements

NFPA 20, Section 12.4.1.3

Due to the introduction of pressure limiting drivers there is a requirement for the controller to monitor overpressure. For engines equipped with pressure limiting controls, the controllers are required to provide visual and audible indication when system overpressure reaches 115 % of total rated head pressure.

Electronic Engine Requirements

NFPA 20, Section 12.4.1.3

Due to the introduction of electronic engines into the market, a visible indicator and audible alarm must be provided for the conditions ECM Selector Switch in Alternate and Fuel Injection Malfunction. In order to meet the requirements, two pilot lights and relay contacts are added to the controller.

Electronic Engine Requirements

NFPA 20, Section 12.4.1.3

Controller terminal strips have two additional terminals for connecting to the engine control panel. They are as follows:

Terminal Number: 301 - ECM Selector Switch in Alternate Terminal Number: 302 - Fuel Injection Malfunction

Jockey Pump Controllers

2002 Eaton Corporation. All rights reserved.

Purpose

Plumbing systems can encounter leaks for various reasons. Leaks = drop in pressure - (usually minor - only a few psi) The pressure must be kept at a level that will enable the system to react correctly in case of a call to start.

Purpose

Since the pressure drop is minor - the fire pump should not be called upon to keep the pressure at a minimum level. A smaller Jockey Pump is used to keep the system pressure at the desired constant. A separate Jockey Pump Controller is used to control the jockey pump.

Internal Components

NEMA 2 Rated Enclosure 120V Control Transformer Circuit Breaker Disconnect Pressure Switch 15-260 psi

Operation

The Jockey Pump controller is essentially an Across-The-Line combination starter with a pressure switch. The pressure switch is set to operate at a specific set-point - set on site.

Operation

Typically the jockey pump starting set point is 10psi above the set point of the fire pump controller. This allows the jockey pump to cycle on and off, as needed, to keep the pressure at the desired psi - without excessively cycling the fire pump.

Breakers -vs- Fuses

Typically two styles of jockey pump controllers can be found in the market. For turning power on and off to the controller either a fusible disconnect or a breaker with a mechanical operating handle are utilized.

Breakers -vs- Fuses

One of the most common reasons breakers are used over fuses, are on-site disappearances of fuses. However, breaker style controllers may be more expensive depending on which manufacturer chosen.

Circuit Transformers

The control voltage in the jockey pump controller is typically line voltage or 120V, 3 phase. The controllers can have a transformer in the circuit which operates on full line voltage and steps down the voltage to 120V.

Overload Protection

Thermal overload protection is allowed by code. Overloads are sized according to the namplate Full Load Amps (FLA) on the motor. Most jockey pump manufacturers size the controller for the appropriate Hp and supply the proper size overload.

Options

Enclosure Type - NEMA 12/3R/4/4X Single Phase Service (120V or 220V) Low Suction Shutdown c/w Pressure Switch Space Heater / Thermostat / Humidistat Power On Light Extra Contacts

Run Period Timers (RPTs)

A Run Period Timer can be added - as an option - to a standard jockey pump controller. The purpose is to ensure that the jockey pump runs for a minimum period of time, when there is a call to start due to low pressure.
