Dear Colleague, Final preparations are now underway for what will be our largest December examinations yet! We expect a record number of doctors and nursed to undertake the DCH & IPPC December 7 exams in a record number of examination sites around the world. (Australia, Cambodia, China, India, Solomon Islands, Vietnam, Vanuatu, Singapore, Sierra Leone, USA, Canada) Our August stream exams have just been completed in Cambodia, China, India, Vietnam and Sierra Leone. After several years of discussion with our colleagues in Perth, a pilot is being arranged in 2013 to enable a formal collaboration in the awarding of DCH from SCHN and the University of Sydney with the Princess Margaret Hospital and the University of Western Australia. Thanks to our CEO, Elizabeth Koff, our Dean, Professor Bruce Robinson, Professor Kathryn North and Professor Adam Jaffe, the DCH will have a role in heralding the emerging formal collaboration between our two campuses in education, clinical care and research. This is in anticipation of further discussions being conducted around a charitable incorporated joint venture for the DCH / IPPC Business Unit early in 2013. Recent international meetings in China, Vietnam and Cambodia have validated the impact of IPPC for our Participants, Tutors, Health Ministries, acknowledged in each location by our Australia Government Representatives. It is particularly gratifying to see progress towards establishing a permanent continuing medical education environment in Cambodia and to receive assurances that IPPC content will be included in part or in full within this new environment. I am pleased to share with you another development and that concerns our plans to make the IPPC course available embedded within the Telstra / Huawei T Tablet to Participants in Noumea, Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands. This is the first time doctors in these South Pacific countries will have had access to the IPPC in this way so we hope that this year long trial will yield positive results and lead to ongoing support from both Telstra and Huawei for postgraduate education for our near neighbours. I am also delighted to let you know that we have started the first phase of our plans for long term follow up of 100% of our DCH & IPPC Graduates to compile a refreshed database of the local and international benefits generated by this program. Good luck to all those presently studying for their December examinations and to all of you considering this exciting opportunity in postgraduate paediatric education next year. Please remember that we encourage all suitably qualified doctors, nurses and allied health professional to enrol in the program and spend one month sampling Lecture Units at no charge...a worthwhile journey for everyone who cares for children and young people! 2012 Lectures

Dr Louise Baker, Obstetrician and Medical Educator, Remote Vocational Training Scheme I was one of the first rural doctors to have the privilege of doing the DCH by distance education. A small group of rural doctors from across the central west gathered weekly around a TV, video at our local hospital and watched world renowned specialists talk about management of a range of childhood illnesses. We did this for 40 weeks and learnt so much about paediatrics, developed life-long friendships with each other and gained so much more. I would highly recommend the Diploma in Child Health to anyone wanting to gain skills in paediatrics and commend it as a fantastic way of learning without having to travel.

Masters Program University of Sydney

The Master of Medicine (Paediatrics) is a Postgraduate qualification offered by the Discipline of Paediatrics and Child Health at The University Masters in Medicine (Paediatrics) The University of Sydney of Sydney. It is designed for clinicians who wish to further their paediatric knowledge in a range of subspecialty paediatric areas. Participants choose their subjects from a selection of Paediatric Units of Study. Each unit stands alone (with no pre-requisites) and is offered fully online. The units are designed to enhance the participants core knowledge by DCH/IPPC delivering an up to date review of the latest practical and theoretical knowledge in the study area. In addition case based scenarios focus on 25% current evidence based best practice. Each unit contains practical and relevant course topics taught by clinicians who are experts in the area. These units are presented in an interactive online format of case-based clinical scenarios and weekly discussions designed to challenge and stimulate participants. This unique course is appropriate for junior doctors (prior to paediatric training); general practitioners; and any other doctors who seek further experience in Paediatric Medicine but do not necessarily wish to pursue formal paediatric training. The course can be undertaken as a Masters degree (requires completion of 8 units), Diploma (6 units) or Graduate Certificate (4 units). Medical practitioners who have successfully completed the Diploma in Child Health / International Postgraduate Paediatric Certificate may obtain credit (to a maximum of 2 units of study) to contribute towards the Master of Medicine. Internet connection reduced the long distance between us. I do benefited a lot from DCH/IPPC lectures, newsletters and other program in various fields. Program Outline for Diploma in Child Health (DCH) / International Postgraduate Paediatric Certificate (IPPC)
A comprehensive overview of evidence based current best practice in paediatrics: all subspecialty areas from neonates to adolescents. One (or two) year, part-time program. 6 months appropriate paediatric experience required for certification (see below*) A total of 111 Lecture Units updates annually: 1 Lecture Unit = 1 hour Recorded Lecture with Learning Outcomes, Lecture Notes, Self-assessment Questions & online feedback form In Australia: 3 Lecture Units per week; minimum of 3 hours personal study / week At international locations, an additional one hour tutorial per week, from local Paediatricians, as Collaborative In-Country Learning. Two course stream options: either from February to December OR September to August. Available over internet (supported with DVDs by arrangement in some sites, where needed) Assessment: 2 case reports; oral & written examinations conducted in each established site. Year one of Paediatric Specialty Training AND ideal training for Family Physicians & Hospital Doctors & ALL doctors & paediatric nurses who treat children & young people. A not-for- profit education enterprise within a trust structure. Cost effective: In each country, different fees are struck to reflect scholarship support & income differences (maximum full international fee is AUD $5,830).

Collaborative In-Country Learning

Tutors International Sites

Tutors are experienced Paediatric Doctors (and where appropriate, Nurses), appointed after approval, in each international location to provide specific additional information of relevance to the health of children and young people in each region. This includes cultural issues, genetic differences, child protection laws, immunization schedules, scope of presentations, available resources, and infectious disease protocols. Tutors are paid for one hour of face to face teaching at their local hourly rate. There will be a ratio of approximately one tutor per 10 participants.

To be awarded the Diploma in Child Health (DCH) / International Postgraduate Paediatric Certificate (IPPC) you need to:
View all lectures, their study material and newsletters Complete Assessment: submit 2 case reports; pass a written and an oral examination. Have 6 months clinical paediatric experience in hospital or community practice or its equivalent (a 12 month requirement for Hong Kong Doctors). Experience in clinical paediatric medicine is calculated at 25% of time in: o Emergency Departments (with paediatric patients) o General Practice (where paediatric patients are treated) o Obstetrics and Gynaecology
