Introduction
This chapter describes the hardware of the MVB - CAN gateway for the SELECONTROL MAS modular automation system.

Application areas of the MVB - CAN gateway

The MVC 721-T module offers an interface from the MVB vehicle bus to the CAN vehicle bus.

Introduction

Using the MVC 721-T module also provides a link between the CAN vehicle bus and the TCN (Train Communication Network).

This means different concepts can be implemented to meet the requirements placed on instrumentation and control systems in rail vehicles.

1.2

Functions MVB - CAN gateway

The MVB-CAN gateway serves as an interface between the multifunction vehicle bus and the CAN bus. It therefore offers a transparent interface to the TCN (Train Communication Network). The quantity of data to be transferred is designed for 512 bytes. This corresponds to 16 MVB process data ports or 64 CAN identifier addresses. All MVB ports or CAN identifiers as well as all sink/source relationships are user programmable. The bus-to-bus propagation delay is of the order of a few tens of ms and is also suitable for time-critical applications.

Module tests
All modules of the automation system SELECONTROL MAS have been developed in view of the fulfilment of the IEC 61131-2 standard (Programmable controllers: part 2, module characteristics). Additional information and details to these standards are mentioned in the annex under paragraph Test standards.

LED indicator
The LED on the front of the MVC module is used for indicating the status. LED On Meaning Run The MVB-CAN gateway enters run state when the module is started. The LED lights up and signals trouble-free operation. There is an error if the LED is off. Possible errors are: No parameter settings, no power supply, hardware fault. The RUN LED flashes when the MVB-CAN gateway parameters are being set. The LED continues flashing after successful programming.

Connections / interfaces
MVC 721-T modules have a supply connection, a CAN bus interface and two MVB (male, female) interfaces.

Connection terminals
Electrical power supply
The electrical power supply to the MVC 721-T is via the 3-pin connection terminal UC and 0 V).

The power supply (UC) is connected as follows:

0V NC UC

The supply voltage (UC) is also provided at the 5-pin CAN bus connection. This means it is possible to supply additional MVC modules via the CAN plug. The max. current through the CAN bus connection is restricted to 5 A.

MVC 721-T configuration

3.

MVC 721-T configuration

It is possible to load several configurations into the MVC 721-T module at the same time. This means one and the same module can be used in different MVB networks or several MVCs with different parameter settings can be used in the same network. (See also Application areas of the MVB - CAN gateway / concepts). The required configuration is selected using DIP switches. Switches 1 3 are used for this; switch 4 has no function.
