Miles of Memories

Well-written narrative lede forces the reader to stick with the article from graph to graph without giving away the real kicker that Jones father has died until after the jump (although, the subhead gives it away.) Best feature lede of the bunch, while substantive human interest angle makes the article compelling even to readers who may initially be turned off thinking this is a strictly sports piece. Like all good sports writing, the author relates this article to larger themes, in this case, of perseverance, accomplishment and honor of a loved one who has passed.

Down & Out in Aldrich Park

Michael Chins Down & Out in Aldrich Park is a delightful account of an audacious, slightly wacky, possibly illegal stunt: spending a week sleeping outdoors on campus. The idea alone was inspired, but what makes this story a winner is Chins deft narrative, which combines humor, vivid writing and an element of suspense as he describes his week ensconced in a tent deep in UC Irvines Aldrich Park, braving jitters, drunken passers-by and an automatic sprinkler system. There are some lovely turns of phrase: I was then alone, kept awake by arbitrary nighttime noise, ghosts of wind rattling the leaves of my paranoia. And Chin brings an unusual sensibility that can bring the pop of surprise to the story. When a hummingbird flits in front of him, he doesnt find it charming or beautiful; it is, rather, sickeningly dreamlike. Given the potential dangers, this is probably not an idea that should be replicated. But for his imagination, fine writing and sheer chutzpah, Chin deserves this recognition.

Of all the entrants, Steve Hills submission was the best balanced as far as being well written, well reported and dealing with a substantive topic. His topic was the challenges of being a part-time teacher in community colleges. His lede was crisp, readable and to the point. He knew hot to use good quotes, avoiding the practice of simply quoting data. Hill ended with a good quote which wrapped up why despite the financial and other constraints of being, essentially, a 2nd-rung teacher, these people persevered. The story felt complete, both in its reporting, writing and arc.

UCLA must clarify admissions process. A civics lesson for UCSA Enough with evading the issue, LMU World AIDS day goes by unnoticed at Biola Redefining roles Transfer centers

A no-nonsense take on a statewide issue that combined good writing with research and reporting. An unusually mature perspective from a college paper that easily ranks with the best from daily papers in California. Tightly written, easy to follow and concise view on campus issue. Interesting take on controversial subject matter. Hard-hitting, concise editorial on a very topical subject -- the Catholic Church's sex abuse scandal, with a local angle. Tough subject for a church school to tackle but done very well. Interesting take on social issues from a Christian worldview. Nice comprehensive backgrounder on the A.S. Council and issues it's confronting. Packs a lot of information into a tight space, makes solid points about questionable state policies toward the community college system in California. Quirky take on campus elections, with the twist that research reveals how little the candidates change their goals from year to year. Matter-of-fact analysis of sexual harassment on campus.

Tough, thoughtful stance on important campus topic; darn near the perfect college college newspaper sports column "Incredible Impact of Title IX'' Finally, a college sports columnist writes powerfully about the most important college sports legislation of our lifetime "Don't Look Back In Anger.'' A masterful job of putting college sports priorities into perspective "Coaching: Good Cops and Bad" Stinging, yet fairly reported rebuke of a badly behaving coach "One Last Shocktoberfest" An artful good-bye column written with honesty and grace "Body Image and the Female A well-written, revealing look at the whispered affliction of female Athlete" college athletes "Dons Win Five Consecutive Well-reported, well-written look at a guy in the shadows Pitcher of the Year Awards'' "Is it the fans?'' Interesting, well-reasoned challenge to the student body "Cubs Culture Clashed'' Asking the important question: Why is there no intercollegiate sports on this college campus? Good composition and just enough information to strengthen this image and make it a winner. Love the red light! Great capture in an obviously crazed situation. Nice timing by the photographer. Good moment as the woman is taken into custody. Beautiful light on the subject as she is surrounded by the darkness of the police uniforms. Photographer was able to make a compelling image in a tough situation. Nice capture. Nice composition and lighting. I like the placement of the victory/peace sign of the protester. Draws the viewers eyes to the situation. Sometimes just being in the right place, at the right time, is what it takes to capture a news image. The addition of people would have moved this image higher, still a good news image. Tough lighting in a tense situation, but a good news image that tells the story. Effective composition turns a typical rally into a good news image that conveys the emotion of the story. Photographer filled the frame with the marchers, but a stronger moment would have made a more effective image. The protesters on the right looked more animated than the one in the foreground. Still a good image. This image has everything a great sports photo should contain. It's a shame it couldn't have run larger, so the faces of joy would have popped more for the reader. Nice job by the photographer. Nice composition and timing as two football players console each other after what appears to be a loss. The reader really feels the emotions of the players in this image. Photographer had good foresight to get above the crowd for this shot of a player being lifted up in celebration. Nice image.

Great image and timing of a touchdown catch. Every element is exactly where it should be to make a good sports image. Good job! Nice timing of a catcher showing he has possession of the baseball. The image could have been cropped for greater impact, but still a nice moment. Good composition and timing, especially the guy in the lower right of the image. His joyful expression makes this image. Nice timing. Sports can be especially tough to cover as a college student without access to the expensive long lenses, but this image is quite nice with the composition, timing and lighting all making for a great image. Good job. Nice tight shot of a swimmer that shows good timing and excellent composition. Great slice of life image that is fun and informative at the same time. Nice frame. Beautiful image that captures the essence of the story. The lighting is exquisite from a situation that probably has horrible fluorescent bulbs. Great job. A portrait that is eye-catching and shows some skill with off-camera lighting. Composition is very structured and well thought out. Just a fantastic image. Best image of the category! The timing is perfect, composition and lighting all add to this image that is fun and a delight to look at for the reader. Excellent frame! Nice composition and I love the fans going crazy in the background. They make this image. A good job by the photographer. Good moment from some sort of competition. Composition is well done, looks like a tough lighting situation with a high ISO, but the photographer handled it well. Nicely done image. A strong composition and well-timed moment make this a winning image from a concert shoot. Typical situation, turned into a well-executed moment. Good job. A pretty photo with beautiful lighting and good composition with the boat in the lower right area. The repetition of the sails and the side of the lighthouse make for eye candy for the reader. Well crafted image. Nicely composed. Wish the background was cleaner and less distracting. Good timing as the dancer flipped up her dress.

A very complete look at data about international students on campus. Probably a little bigger than it needed to be and with a few "art" elements (not quite blended ocean colors) that distract from the overall look. But strong presentation overall. Data rich and well designed. Good information, but looks stretched to fit the space and some elements are redundant. Individual pieces presented nicely and overall composition works well. Good local focus. Nice combination of artwork and information. Well designed and appropriately sized for the amount of information. Strong page design. Not much "graphic" but good information presented clearly. Good use of color. Really more of a page design than a graphic but still the best in this division. Excellent photo cutouts and display of information.

A photo-driven infographic that does a good job of walking the reader through the steps. A little short on actual information and graphics. Election preview graphic, local poll is overly large for amount of information/ "Outline" technique on photos distracts from any otherwise good package. Strong visual that makes its point powerfully. kaleidoscopic, panoramic, cineramic, and just plain cool! amusing, yet pointed the Doodlemeister has bite and fights for what's right. hilarious Cosmo sendup, perfectly accompanies column. cleverly captures the essence of final exam anxiety. frighteningly illustrates students' Little Shop of Horrors.' excellently captures editorial's key point. makes its 'lifeline' point of view simply and effectively.

best back to school or orientation Very clean covers, loved the on campus/off campus sections, solid issue content, good newsy issues in front section, nice stories in on campus section Best back to school or Really nice to pick up a meaty newspaper. I like the sections, unique orientation issue story ideas. This issue had good, clean layout. Nice fonts. Clearly a lot of work went into this. I can see something this big being a bit too big for a casual campus reader though. Best back to school or Really creative cover, good use of color, Bezerkley phrasebook was a orientation issue nice touch and had creative layout. Excellent illustrations and use of art. It did feel a bit cramped though. best back to school or orientation My hat's off for the professional, innovated pocket guide. What a great issue, starting with the cover with the light bulb! Love the clean design throughout, article choices. The double-truck editorial section in the middle really looks nice as well. "Creative ways to recycle newspapers." Great cover and researched topic: drugs. I liked the very clean layout and use of good graphics as well. Again, I think this was a great topic to focus so much attention on. Starting with a great cover and cutout of the football player, this is a solid issue. Very clean design throughout. Only advice is possibly updating the body copy font face. Love the cover, with the take on a movie poster with awards or accolades on the bottom. Very clean design throughout, and it looks like a lot of work went into this issue. It shows off well. Only advice would be to get a more modern-looking body copy font face, and to perhaps kern the letters less frequently. While the cover is a little bare (though clean), the inside sections stand out better. Nice design throughout. The holiday gift guide in the middle stands out nicely as well. Great job! Very professional-looking cover. Nice and clean design throughout. I also like the use of a locator map.

What an amazing cover with the campaign buttons! Very, very nice on job on that, as well as the clean design on the inside. It's a concise issue that gets to its point nicely. Love the cover with the hand-drawn graphic of California upside-down. Design is pretty good throughout, as are more of those graphics. Bar graphs, however, could be spruced up more to make them look more appealing somehow. Might want to try a more modern body copy font as well. Overall, nice work. I love the topic of this special section: "The lowdown on trash." The humor of the back page being the rear of a trash truck was not lost on me - what a great touch! I love this as a topic as well. Only criticisms would be trying to modernize and spruce up some of the inside layout. However, it is a clean layout. Nice work overall!
