L2 Leadership in Organizations.

. Definitions: Organization Behaviour is the systematic study and of how individuals and groups act within the organisations where they work. Management is by putting OB knowledge to work within the organisations. Leadership is the art of influencing people to work towards a common goal. Notes: People have to be able and willing to work. It is important to have good relationship with workers and have high quality relationship with your followers (People focused). Transformational Leaders are leaders who change the basic values, beliefs and attitudes of their followers and engender a willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty. They have characteristics like charisma and they provide vision. Reframing Leadership What is a frame? A frame is a mental model a set of ideas and assumptions. Frames are vital because organisations dont come up with computerized navigation systems to guide you. Instead, managers need to develop and carry accurate mental maps in their head to have a picture of whats happening. The intuitive blink process: 1. Non-conscious. 2. It occurs almost instantly. 3. It is holistic as there is a meaningful pattern. Managers have a tough challenge due to the fact that organisations are complex and diagnostic categories are less well defined. Hence, the quality of the judgement depends on the information available at hand and how well it is utilized. 4 Frames of Leadership Structural, Human Resources, Political and Symbolic/Cultural 1. Structural Leaders (Architects/Engineers) Focus on the practical details and efficiency of the team 2. Human Resource (Catalysts) Leaders are people orientated and the focus on motivational and encouragement. 3. Political Leaders (Advocates) They focus on using influence to reach desired objectives 4. Cultural/Symbolic Leaders (Visionaries) They emphasise on managing meaning, providing a sense of direction and purpose to their followers. Studies showed that the ability to use multiple frames results in greater effectiveness for managers and leaders. Multi-frame thinking requires moving beyond the narrow, mechanical approach for understanding organisations. By solving one problem a specific way results in a failure of both imagination and courage of the leader.

Imagination is the best chance for being ready when problems appear and multi-frame thinking is a powerful stimulus to the broad, creative mind-set imagination requires Summary When organisations become pervasive and dominant, they are harder to understand and manage. As a result, managers are clueless and the consequences of myopic management and leadership can lead to organisational catastrophes. Learning the multiple frames is a defense against being clueless about what you are doing or why. Hence, reframing is a powerful tool for gaining clarity, regaining balance, generating new options and finding strategies that make a difference.
