I also see Volvo's that use fully synthetic oil and when they begin to have high miles they start to sludge because fully synthetic oil does not clean as well. Now there may be other factors such as oil change intervals etc. , but this is just what I've experienced in 15 years of working on cars. The best thing to do is use the appropriate viscosity for your engine and climate as recommended by the manufacturer. In general, newer vehicles will specify lower viscosity oils such as 5W-30 while older vehicles will specify higher viscosity oils such as 20W-50. This is because today's engines are built with tighter bearing clearances to take advantage of the fuel economy benefits of lower viscosity oils. It is not really a good idea to use thicker oil in one of these engines because it will disrupt the oil flow characteristics of the engine and may create excessively high oil pressure. In an older engine that was designed with larger bearing clearances, it is appropriate and recommended to use a thicker oil to maintain proper oil pressure and provide adequate bearing film thickness. This is also true for engines that have a lot of miles on them and the oil pressure is starting to drop off. By using higher viscosity oil, you can boost the oil pressure back to normal levels and increase bearing film strength. If the oil pressure is starting to go down when the engine is warm, just change to a heavier grade oil at your next oil change. If you've been using 5W15, change to 10W30 or even heavier. That will help you get a lot more life out of the engine. The thicker oil will keep the worn bearings lubricated better and help the engine last longer. It really doesn't matter if you have used only dino oil over the years.

Thick oil flows more slowly than thin oil, so it tends to reach the bearings last. But with higher mileage engines the bearings get worn a little and you need a litttle thicker oil to fill the clearance. The thicker oil will not be able to leak past the worn bearings as fast. That will allow the oil pump to keep up with the rate that the oil is leaking out

It's better to keep your motor cleaner with more frequent oil changes at 3k with dino oils than running up to 57k with syns

When you introduce synthetic oil to an engine that has been running dino oil all those years... well it either breaks or leaks around those false seals. 1.) the detergents break the seals and 2.) synthetic oil is so slick that it can get in places that conventional dino oil can not.

The important part of oil related motorcycle maintenance is not so much what oil you use, but how often you change it. Many motorcycles have drastically different oil capacities and run at much different RPM's. Those two factors are what contribute the most to the life of the oil in your bike. A bike with a large oil capacity that runs at relatively low RPM (like a large cruiser or mid sized twin) will circulate the oil slower and cause less wear. A high strung motorcycle (performance or sport oriented) will circulate the oil much faster and wear it out in about half the time. Most of my street machines get their oil changed every 2000 miles. What to Watch Out For.

The faces of the transmission gears mashing together cause significant wear to your oil, which is why it is best recommended that motorcycle oils are changed on a more regular basis than a car. Most vocalists for motorcycle specific oils state that you should use them because they have additives to keep your clutch plates from slipping and wearing out faster. A good quality auto oil is just as suitable for a motorcycle and gearbox as is a motorcycle specific oil. Auto oils also cost 1/3 the price and are available everywhere.

A new bike with low miles will benefit in the long run by using a synthetic oil, it has been proven that they really do protect better. Don't run synthetic oil in an older motorcycle that has not been using it. Synthetic oils are more thin than fossil oils and can seep right though old gaskets. If you bike has been running on dino oil, keep it that way. Cheap oils. OK, auto oils may be inexpensive, but don't get the CHEAP stuff. Buy a major brand oil (mobil, pennzoil, castrol, etc) at a typical price point ($3-4 a quart). If you're buying some garbage oil like "Master Cruiser" for $1.39 at the dollar store, you are going to be sorry. Cheap oils are just that, cheap. They are the remaining sludge in the tank, they are often recycled, and if you look up their ratings they are often not suitable for vehicles made after 1950! Just use common sense and you'll be fine. Detergents. There aren't many oils that use detergents anymore; this can probably be lumped into the 'cheap oil' category. Back in the day they used to add detergents to oils to 'clean' the motors. This is no longer common practice as oils and motors have come a LONG way over the last 50 years. Do NOT put an oil with detergents into your wet clutch motorcycle. The detergents will make your clutch slip terribly and you'll need to flush the system several times with fresh oil, and maybe even remove the clutch plates to clean them by hand. Consider yourself warned. If there are detergents in an oil it will say it on the bottle, no common modern oils have detergents. Keep it topped up. After a long day of riding, or riding in some extensive heat, I always check the motor oil level. In fact, I check my oil nearly every time I stop for gas.

Also note this, if you use dino then don't change it frequently because it is now proven that frequently changing dino oil is more harmful then over-extending. It's because the detergent additives in dino are very corrosive and cause wear, use wears out these harmful detergents so it's better old then new. Some people will tell you that it doesn't matter what you use if you just change it frequently...WRONG!

Shear effects by bearings and gears in your transmission effect the viscosity ability of all oils It is best to use an oil that does not need supplemental additives! Inexpensive Dino Oil: Kendall GT 20w50 or Castrol GTX 20w50 (or it's High Mileage formulation). I'm not a big fan of GTX, but if changed often, it's okay. Good Dino Oil: Valvoline 4-stroke motorcycle oil 10w40 or 20w50. This oil is easy to find and comes with an API SF/SG/SJ rating. Best Non-Synthetic Dino Oil: Swepco 15w40 "306" motor oil. Many shops who had been using Mobil 1 have switched to this and most if not all their problems (including bearing failures) went away. Best Semi-Synthetic:Brad Penn Racing (it's 100% Pennsylvania crude and a modern version of the green Kendall GT from decades past) and has 10% group III synthetic blended in for cold start and extreme heat protection.
