Engineering in General
Literature Review In general, engineering is the practical application of science and mathematics to solve the problems in our daily life. Engineering technologies are used in the design and construction of structures, machines, devices, systems, materials and processes, to improve the ways we communicate, work, travel, stay healthy and entertain ourselves. Engineering is a broad discipline which is divided into several sub-disciplines. Every discipline focus on the issues associated with developing a specific kind of product, or using a specific type of technology. The advantages of engineering to society can be categorized into four categories, those are sustainability, safety, cleanliness and connection. In the case of sustainability, engineering is planning for continual growth of human population by ensuring the sufficiency of resources for people. Engineering is also concerned with the safety by considering all the possible factors in the on-going progress to reduce the risk of accidents and disasters. Engineering also manages sewages, wastes and purification to improve the cleanliness of the surroundings which directly ensure the health of the people. Lastly, engineering focuses on the connection and globalization by implementing new technologies and design to speed up and improve the global connection and directly boost the growth of economy. Engineers are problem-solvers, organizers, communicators, calculators and designers who apply mathematics and science such as physics to find suitable solutions to problems. Besides, they also use the skills and knowledge to make things work more efficiently, quickly and less costly by proposing and managing any relevant materials or resources required and designing the solution in complete detail. Summary Engineering is the involvement in technical task related to design, construction of new structures, process, maintainance or supporting the quality aspects of the tasks. It aims to bring convenience to mankind, reduce the risk of accidents and predict and safeguard the human survival. Engineering has wide branches where every branch focuses on different issues. The technologies of engineering can improve the quality and implement new options to our daily life. Mostly, engineering today emphasizes on sustainability, safety, cleanliness and connection. It deals with the existing problems and finds suitable and constructive solutions to overcome it. Engineer is the person who works in this field and on solving existing problems by analysing and predicting the source of the problems.

How to be a professional engineer?

Literature Review

According to NSPR, a professional engineer is a credential that signals and indicates an engineer capability to shoulder higher responsibilities and manage more important projects.

There are several advantages of being a professional engineer, one of them being job promotion. In this context, it provides a big opportunity to engineers to be involved in corporate management and handle senior engineering projects (PE Exam Review, 2012). Besides, it also highlights expertise and credibility, earning the licensure holder a higher level of respect in the fraternity of engineering field. The licensure also plays an important part in broadening the career prospect of an engineer; with this position, engineer would qualify themselves to take on post in governmental engineering positions in either municipal agencies or federal states.

To be a professional engineer, one must register as a Graduate Engineer with Board of Engineering Malaysia (BEM), undergo training for three years in the field of process design, planning, research and teaching in order to get practical experiences to be qualified to sit for Professional Assessment Examination (PAE) and pass the exam. Besides, being elected as a Corporate Member of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) would also qualify an engineer to be an IR.

Summary

A professional engineer is a qualification to handle higher responsibilities. It indicates expertise and knowledge in the field. Therefore, a professional engineer has the higher opportunity to get promoted and get engineering projects. So, to be a professional engineer, one has to register as a Graduate Engineer with Board of Engineering Malaysia (BEM). He has to undergo an industrial training for three to five years. During the training, one will involve in design, planning, research and teaching to gain practical experience so that he/she can be qualified for the Professional Assessment Examination (PAE) and must pass the exam. To be a professional engineer, one must possess integrity, willing to assist, respectful, listen to the advice or opinion of others and with own right judgement, continuous learning and be positive personalities.

Questions

Engineer: Lim Tow Nam (an electronic engineer) 1. In your opinion, how do you define engineering in general? Engineering is the involvement in technical task related to process, maintainance or supporting the quality aspects of the tasks. It could be involved in multiple areas of operations such as in manufacturing and construction of infrastructure, or provides services as consultant that requires knowledge and skills to perform.

2. As we know, engineering plays a vital role in the development of whole mankind. Please tell us about the benefits and advantages that engineering brings to us. It provides mankind the convenient, overcome natural disastrous, provide lively entertainment, predict and safeguard the human being survival.

3. These are some examples of the contributions of engineering to society. Building of bridges that can withstand the load of all heavy vehicles from one place to another. Air conditioning in car that will maintain a consistent room temperature while driving & ensure the passengers sitting enjoy the journey Accident free, economic and pleasant fight to the other country we wish to travel to work or for holiday. The exploration of space through rocket or spacecraft one day could ensure the continuous survival of mankind living in this or another universe in the long or distant future Engineering have played its role to make the products we want and have more userfriendly, affordable, artistic and many more. Another example of engineering is the CRT TV becomes today flat screen smart TV, with less energy consumption, can play video game or driving like a real sport car in front of the TV. Also Engineering can assist us to stop using the fossil fuel to solar energy, electric car, etc...

4. What personal characteristics do you feel are necessary to be a professional engineer? To be a professional engineer, one must possess 1) Integrity (abide Ethic and Code of conduct) 2) Respectful personality 3) Willingness to assist 4) Listen to the advice or opinion of others and with own right judgement 5) Continuous Learning 6) Be positive.

5. How can we as a student, practice these attribute starting from now? First, we must strengthen our foundation by studying hard and be interested on what you are going to learn. Next, we must be active in legal activities so that we can know more about other people We must never give up to what we want and got to do. Lastly, we should always seek for help, assistant and consultation from our friends and lecturers when we face obstacles in studies and activities.

6. Would active participation in organised activities or events help in facilitating our future progress towards becoming a professional engineer? Yes. Besides having involvement in team management, we can also learn the experience from the organizers. This involves lots of human aspect instead of just engineering or science. The knowledge & experience learned from the activities are real & can't just be reading to understand. It is so-called as learning through involvement.

7. Do you think that we need to achieve high level of academic qualification in order to become a professional engineer? Or it is just a condition that we need before become a professional engineer It is always good to achieve higher level of academic qualification. Of course it will useful for next further study or more. What is important is that we use what we have learned through academic study to better our tasks when we come to work in the society. Also, it depends to the type of professional you want to be, very in depth understanding of the technical subject matter in order to do specific research and development.

Applying what you have learned also depend very much the type of job you will involve. It all goes down to what you want. For example, Microsoft Bill Gate do know what he want to be and quit early from University, did not stop him to learn and do what he wanted to.

8. As we know, working as an engineer has lots of workload. So how do you feel about the workload in the engineering department on your present or previous job? In industrial like ours, a person can have multiple job rotation from engineering to project based, to management base. One must be happy with what he/she is doing plus others factors like pay increment, promotion, career path and so forth. It is not just about workload, it involve how do you work as team with your counterpart, your superior, your subordinate and others.

9. As an engineer, how do you overcome the problem that come of all a sudden? If the problem arises from the work task, be calm & review what went wrong. We should justify if we can solve the problems ourselves or we need help. For example, if we face technical problems, we cant resolve it ourselves but we need help, need more training or need some guidance or advises from the senior. However, if we face relationship problems among colleagues and teammates, try to control our emotional feeling as this is sometime tricky and even cause more harm than technical, it must be handled more tactfully & carefully. It is best to get the advice from those experience seniors whom you trust can assist & advise.
