Foreword
This is the second IEEE International Conference on Multi-Media In Engineering Education. This conference is being held at a time when rapid advancement in multimedia technology and its usage in education is taking place. Since the first conference, the utilisation of Multimedia technology in education has grown beyond imagination. In their ever lasting search for quality, flexibility and efficiency in teaching and learning it is not surprising that modern day universities and educational institutions have taken to Multimedia and used it in lecture delivery, practice and tutorial classes. With the rapid advancement in microelectronics and optical fibre communication technology, the trend is expected not only to continue but to grow very rapidly. This conference offers the opportunity for educators, and especially engineering educators, to debate issues relating to Multimedia and how it can best be used to enhance the learning and teaching process. The exchange of ideas and experiences amongst participants will no doubt help all of us in our search for achieving quality, effective and efficient course material delivery, tutoring, utilisation of resources and enhancement of learning. The organising committee has endeavoured to present participants with a comprehensive program of varied and interesting applications of Multimedia in education. The Committee has been fortunate enough to enlist the support of many world renowned experts in the field. These experts will deliver keynote speeches, take part in panel discussions and debate topical issues. The Committee has selected exciting contributions of varied scopes and themes which will expose participants to state-ofthe-art multi-media based engineering education through live demonstrations. This conference has been possible only with the help of the dedicated and hard working members of the steering committee. I would therefore like to express my thanks and gratitude to all members of the steering committee. Thanks should also go to Professor Michael Wald, Chairperson of the International Advisory Committee for his much appreciated and vital contribution on many fronts. Thanks are due to Professor Bill Charters, Dean of Engineering at the University of Melbourne, for his solid support of the conference throughout. The technical support has been offered by the University of Melbourne's Department of Engineering Computing Resources, for which we are t h d l . Finally special thanks must go to the Universities of Melbourne, Monash and RMIT and all other sponsors for their support of this conference. Finally, I wish our overseas visitors a happy and successhl stay in this country and I thank them and our own local participants for their support.
