Dr.CheeYamSaniscurrentlyanassociateprofessorintheLearningSciences& TechnologiesAcademicGroupandtheLearningSciencesLabattheNationalInstituteof Education,NanyangTechnologicalUniversity.Hisresearchfocusesonnewmedia,specifically intheareaofgamebasedlearningandhehasdevelopedseveraleducationalgames.Dr.Kim ChweeTanisalsoanassociateprofessorattheNationalInstituteofEducationinSingapore.His mainareaofresearchfocusesonstudentsunderstandingofscienceconceptsaswellasthe developmentofsciencecurriculum.Thisarticlesuccessfullydemonstratesthatgamebased inquirylearningcanimprovestudentunderstandingandcomprehensioninascienceclassroom. Itisbasedonastudyofstudentswhousedagametolearnchemistryandcomparestheirpre andposttestscoreswithacontrolgroupwhodidnotusethegame.Comparedtootherarticles ongamebasedlearning,itissimilarinthatitprovidesacasestudyandconnectstheresultsto existingeducationaltheory.Thisisrelatedtomyresearchfocusbecauseitexamineshowand whygamebasedlearningcanbeusedtoimprovestudentengagementandachievementin school.

Interestingly,theauthorsdiscoveredthroughacasestudythatstudentsgivenastorycontextfor theonlineactivitiesdidnotperformsignificantlybetteronassessmentsthanstudentswhodid

notreceiveastorycontext.Theauthorsrecommendthatinstructionaldesignersneedtoavoid includingunnecessaryinformation.Thisarticleseemstocontradictotherresearchin gamebasedlearningthatsuggestsastorycontextisapowerfulmotivatorforstudentsandcan driveengagementandachievement.Thisisrelatedtomyresearchfocusbecausealarge componentofgamebasedlearningisabouthowgameconcepts,suchasastoryline,canbe leveragedintheclassroomsetting.
