ASSIGNMENT GULLIVERS TRAVELS

QUES - DISCUSS GULLIVERS TRAVELS AS A MULTI GENRE TEXT.

Jonathan swift published his gullivers travles anonymously in 1726. The four part series is a travelogue in which the narrator , a ship capatain and surgeon named lemuel Gulliver voayges across fantastical lands, meeting various kinds of inhabitants. The text is an exploration of mans social and moral nature in non theological terms, done in allegorical manner and embedded in a fantasy. The text is a fictional account of the travels made by gullivers with vivid discriptions that help the author to critiuque follies of human nature via building the grand satire and encompassing in it the unique way of travel accounts, irony, sarcasm , comedy, fantasy , adventure that both appeals the raeder and allows him or her to circumspect. The text despite its depth and the subject matter it deals with is often classified as a childrens story. This is so because of the popularity of the liliput section which is frequently bowdlerised for children. Various films and adapatations have been produced for the same purpose. The comedy and adevneture of lilput experienced by Gulliver are really popular amongst children. For children it remains an enchanting fantasy. The small liliputans and then followed by the opposite tall brobdingafns , the element of fantasy is presnst everywhere as the narrator creates his critique of human nature in different aspects. Some generate immense comedy and humor like when the emperor of liliput is described. But the fantasy genre also does the cultural exploration that gulliver and the reader experience. Swift uses travelogue. It was a fashionable genre at that time and many authors wrote realistic travel journeys. But gullivers travels is a prody of the account of the travels as the author travels into fictional places using vivid discriptions. He himself was a great traveller learning many things, his problem was to find a way in which he could set down the most significant of his obesvations of human life, for his purpose if he could not do any good to vex the world , so perhaps amuse some of his friends as critic Herbert davis points out. He himself like gulliver is no genius and intelliugent , yet gives the account of follies of mankind that made him a moral and debased creature. The travel genre works not only to parody the genre of travelogue itself attacking writers who almost reprt everything about their trip in book 1. Swift did not approve of the idea that travelogues should be informative and educational. Thus he wrote a parody on them. He mocks the writers who tok pleasure and exhuberance in the places they visted, rather swift through gulliver as a traveller becomes critical of the craetures and the lands he visits. The basic theme that entails the entire part of the text the kinds of satires that swift uses. The writers eveoks humor, soemtmes pokes fun at human pretentions and ridicule that makes gulliver question his own kind per se.
