Funding boost for boat museum
A 294,000 award from Arts Council
England will help develop an industrial
heritage strategy across Cheshire
West which will attract more visitors
and involve residents in their own
history.
The money will be used to help
Cheshire West Museums, in
partnership with the National
Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port,
to put on new displays and encourage
community involvement.
The Ellesmere Port museum, will
work closely with other sites like
the Anderton Boat Lift to create a
compelling industrial heritage attractions tourism offer.
Additional family friendly activities, new exhibits exploring other industries like boat
building and chemicals are some of the developments planned. The strategy will also
encourage community involvement as visitors and volunteer helpers.
Sue Hughes, museum director said: We are grateful to the Arts Council for giving us
the opportunity to develop this project in partnership and hence improve and promote
the overall offer for industrial heritage in Cheshire West. We are looking forward to
learning from each other and sharing skills and resources.

FORMER Mayor and local Councillor for
Ellesmere Port and Neston, Alderman
Peter Shephard, has died at the Countess
of Chester hospital aged 79 yrs.
Born in Liverpool, he did his National
Service in the Royal Navy, rising to
Lance Corporal in the Royal Marine
Commandos, proud of his Green Beret,
and was stationed in Norway and Malta.
He and his wife Barbara and son Tony
moved to Toronto, Canada in 1957, where
their daughter Sylvia was
born.
While residing in
Canada, Peter became a
very inuential member
of the Tobacco Workers
Union.
The family returned to
England in 1971, and
went to live in Great
Sutton, and Peter formed
his own painting and
decorating business.
Peter was a lifelong
socialist, and joined
the Local Constituency Labour Party,
becoming vice- president.
He was elected to Ellesmere Port and
Neston Borough Council in 1987, and
for 22 years was a hardworking local
Councillor for the Rivacre Ward.
In 2000- 2001, he was Mayor of
Ellesmere Port and Neston. He created
the Junior Citizens project where primary
school pupils came to the Council
Chamber, electing their own Junior Mayor
and holding a council meeting where
they could put their questions to local
councillors.
He continued the project with the support
of subsequent Mayors until the demise
of the Council in 2009, when he stepped
down as a Councillor and was made an
Honorary Alderman.
Peter strongly believed in developing
the relationship with Ellesmere Ports
twin town of Reutlingen, Germany. As
Mayor, he led a memorable delegation to
Reutlingen, where he had the honour of
opening their Beer Festival.
His support for young people continued
in his roles as Governor for both
Parklands and Gorsthills primary schools.
He was involved with the Air Cadets, and
Sea Cadets.
His other great passion was
the Health Service. He was a
tenacious campaigner for the
improvement of Health Services,
and was a member of the
Community Health Council, and
Links.
Cheshire West and Chester
Councillor Angela Claydon paid
tribute to him. Peter was my
fellow Councillor in the Rivacre
ward on Ellesmere Port and
Neston Council and would go to
any lengths to serve the people
who elected him, and especially
the young people.
He was a dedicated Councillor, and
a great Mayor. He was also my close
friend for over 30 years. I will miss him so
much.
Ellesmere Port and Neston MP Andrew
Miller added: Peter was a man for whom
I had the utmost respect.
His kindness to others and commitment
to the society in which he lived should be
an example to us all. My heart goes out to
Barbara and his family- we have all lost a
great friend.
He was devoted to his family, wife
Barbara, son Tony, daughter Sylvia,
daughter in law Jackie and delighted
in spending time with his grandchildren
Peter, Stacy and Tobey and great
grandchild Bethany.

A STATE-OF-THE-ART BMX track in the
Parklands area of Little Sutton is now
ofcially open following a special celebratory
event.
The 170,000 projects completion, which
has also seen major improvement works to
the green spaces footpaths, is the result
of a number of years of work led by the
Councils Our Place team in partnership with
Groundwork Cheshire.
Working together with partners including
local residents, Cheshire Police and main
contractor County Landscapes, the project
was based rmly around the needs of
the local community and was funded by
FCC Environment Ltd through the landll
communities funds administered by WREN,
the Ellesmere Port Area Partnership Board,
Cheshire West and Chester Council and
contributions from local developments.
The idea to create a BMX track at the
Parklands site off Valley Drive initially
came through the Our Place teams local
Neighbourhood Action Group in the area,
which was quickly followed up with full
resident consultation.
New ways of local working allowed residents
to take their ambitions to deal with multiple
issues through to being delivered through
genuine partnering and shared funding.
INNOVATIVE
Executive Member for Community and
Environment, Councillor Lynn Riley, said:
Yesterdays special celebratory event was
a real chance for us to thank everyone
involved in this project for their support it
has taken a few years to come to fruition
and without our partners we wouldnt have
been able to complete such an innovative
and challenging project that really meets the
needs of local people.
Throughout the works residents have
popped down and shared their support and
pleasure at the renovation works and the
bike track has already proven to be hugely
popular with local young people.
I know the new track and improved
footpaths will become a real asset, not
only to the local community but to all of
our residents in Ellesmere Port and further
aeld.
LANDSCAPE
Designed by specialist contractors Clark
and Kent, the BMX facility is completely
unique, making the best use of the existing
landscape and providing an exciting and
challenging course for users.
The network of new pathways, which were
completed by County Landscapes, provide
greatly improved access routes through
the area for pedestrians and cyclists and
form part of the Ellesmere Port Greenway
- a green loop of over 50km of multi-user
pathways and cycle ways in and around
Ellesmere Port.
Led by the Ellesmere Port Development
Board, the Greenway will link local
attractions and places of interest by making
it easier for everyone to get around on foot
or by bicycle, as well as improving access to
local green spaces.
Andrew Miller MP, who cut the ribbon at
the special event, said: This is great for our
young people and I look forward to seeing
BMX stars get their sk
BMX stars of tomorrow developing their skills
on the track!
It is the kind of high quality investment
in sport and leisure that we need in
Ellesmere Port and I will continue to press
for investment in better facilities across the
constituency.
LONG TERM SUCCESS
Local member, Councillor Ben Powell, said:
It was great to see so many local residents
and partner organisations at this event
which really is testament to the fantastic
support and hard work that so many people
have contributed to make the track become a
reality.
The development of the new track began
initially due to the input of Cheshire Police
who, along with young people living locally,
have been instrumental in getting the project
off the ground.
I want to do my very best to ensure the
long-term success of the new track and will
be providing funding from my member budget
grant to support the user group.
WREN Grant Manager, Richard Smith, said:
This is one of the largest projects that WREN
has ever supported and funded in Cheshire
and I am really pleased to see the nal
designs come to fruition.
The support I have seen for the project
locally shows that there was a real need for a
facility of this type and I am delighted that we
could help make that happen.
skills right on track
Clark Bridgett from Clark and Kent, PC Tom Grant, Groundwork Cheshires Fiona
Cowley, Councillor Ben Powell, Andrew Miller MP, Councillor Angela Claydon, Richard
Smith from WREN and lead member of the new user group Steve Wilkinson at the
ofcial opening of the new facility.

MAY BLOSSOMS
GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
LATE spring is one of my
favourite times of the
year when trees and
shrubs burst with
white blossom and
the new leaves are a
fresh green.
If you want a tree
for a small garden try
crab apples (Malus) on
a dwarng rootstock such
as M26, that will reduce the
ultimate size of the tree to
12ft (3.6m). The trees give
you pink or white blossom
in spring and apples or
crab apples in autumn
with good autumn
foliage colour. Crab
apple varieties to
consider include John
Downie pretty yellow
and red fruit and lots
of pink blossom or Pink
Glow with large plum sized
pink apples.
A shrub with pretty pink
owers that will form a
mound of colour in early
summer is Deutzia which will
grow to 3ft (1m) tall. Look out
for Deutzia x elegantissima
Rosealind with deep pink
owers or Deutzia x hybrid
Mont Rose. Plant in sun or
partial shade in most soils.
Those with acidic soils
can grow Azaleas and
Rhododendrons. Both have
owers in a wide range of
colours but if you want scent
and owers go for the scented
Azaleas especially those with
yellow owers.
If you are interested in
perennials try the deep
blue perennial cornower,
Centaurea Montana. It is
long owering, will ower
a second time if you cut the
rst owers off and will grow
in most heavier soils but is
not keen on sandy soils.
Jobs to do in early
summer include
planting up pots with
tender perennials
once the frost is
nally banished!
Sow seeds indoors of
French and Runner
beans, Courgettes and
Cucumbers then harden
off and plant out in June.
Outside you should be able
to germinate carrots, peas,
lettuce, radishes and other
leafy salads from mid
May onwards.
If you would like
more ideas of plants
to grow, visit a
garden open under
the National Gardens
Scheme where your
entrance fee goes to
charities including Macmillan
Cancer Support. Gardens
open in May include Tirley
Garth at Willington which
has many old Azaleas and
Rhododenrons in this historic
Arts and Crafts garden
(open 12th and 19th May).
Haughton Hall at Haughton
near Bunbury is open on 5th
May and also has Azaleas
and Rhododendrons and
interesting trees.
