Sir Steve drops by to see schools new equipment
QUEENS Park High School has just completed two major sports facility refurbishments aided by
funding from Sport England and Awards for All.
Sport England has provided a 25,000 grant to put towards the provision of a new high
specication Sports Hall oor. The top quality linolastic oor which was completed in time for the
new Summer Term has put the bounce back into sporting activities and
made a real difference to pupils, staff and community users.
Head of the PE department Charlie Clubb said: The generous funding
from Sport England has provided us with an incredible improved facility
which has had a signicant impact on the school and the local community
and will ultimately encourage a healthier lifestyle for everyone.
Awards for All have provided a 10,000 grant towards the refurbishment
of our school Fitness Suite. Not only are the new facilities fantastic for
Queens Park students the grant will enable us to carry out a community
tness improvement programme with our partner schools and other local
groups which will start in the summer term.
The Redgrave Institute supported the PE department in the design of the
room and also provided additional equipment to help improve the space.
Students and staff were delighted by a surprise visit from Sir Steve Redgrave in March. He called
by school to see how the outcome of the refurbishment and offer his support to KS3 students who
were taking part in an after-school indoor rowing club run by our British Rowing Coach, Annie
Barsoum, along with our student Sport Leaders.

Academy status moves a step closer
THE governing body met on 26th March and resolved to apply for academy status at Queens
Park High School.
This decision was reached after a full review of all the information, questions and comments
submitted by all our
stakeholders during the six
week consultation process.
A spokeswoman for the
school said: We would
like to thank those of you
who submitted comments.
Your contribution was very
important to us throughout
this process and the many
positive comments we
received have conrmed
that this is the right decision for our school.

Rowers at the
head of the race
The North of England Head, held in
March, was extremely well attended and
thankfully in sunshine for most of the day.
Rowers from Runcorn Rowing Club, Sam
Pettinger-Hart and Matt Kilborn, combined
with rowers from Queens Park High
School, Chris McCartney and another
student, came rst in the J16 coxless
quads beating their opposition by seven
seconds and coming 5th overall in Division
one.
In the second Division WJ13 girls
(pictured) Sam McIlwaine, Rona Fishburn,
Felicity Weir, Eve Finlay and cox Lucy
Clegg rowing up as WJ14s came second
in the WJ14 group beating a number of
more senior crews in the race.

There is still a spate of thefts going on around Handbridge. Mainly bicycles are
being stolen from the schools and college and from garages.
z I have been working in partnership with CWaC Community Warden Neil
Denby marking residents bicycles. We have attended the residents homes and
supplied them with a bike passport and offered crime prevention advice. If you

z I have also been deploying the Speed Indicator Device on Eaton Road, this has
been a joint approach with Cheshire West and Chester Community Warden Neil
Denby. We are looking to deploy it to Overleigh Road in the next few weeks.
z We have had a vagrant staying in the Overleigh Cemetery recently. I have
attended with CWaC Community Warden Sharon Marshall to speak to the male
and he has now been removed and given a place to stay out of the area.
z I have had reports of drug use down at the river with drug paraphernalia
littered around, I am currently working with the council on this matter and work
to clear this up is in the process.

I WAS asked recently if I would write
about the older woman and treatments
that are available to her.
Where to start... I have just looked through
my latest professional beauty magazine
advertising all the latest machines and
treatments, most of which are endorsed by
a famous celebrity and with a price tag to
match, promising to treat every possible
skin and body problem and make you look
20 years old again!
Ageing, as we know, is a natural and
inevitable process and some people age
faster than others due to many factors such
as lifestyle, genes, health, stress, the sun
and diet. Later in life your past can catch
you up showing itself in lines and wrinkles
and brown pigmented sun damage marks.
Sagging skin is another bit of bad news.
Now that were all completely depressed,
lets look at the good news of how you can
improve your appearance and make you
look really good for your age.
Bad deportment can be very ageing.
When standing or walking squeeze your
muscles in your bottom and immediately
you will ind your stomach lattens and your
shoulders go back, lift your chin up and you
will already look taller and younger!
The sagging jaw line or jowls is a common
cry for help at our clinic. At home, or even
in the car waiting at the trafic lights,
performing facial exercises is great! I call
it The AEIOU exercise. You repeatedly
accentuate the letter A (about 15 times)
then the letter E and so on. At the letter U
say it like an ooo sound bringing forward
your lower jaw. Your jaw may be a little sti
for a few days, but that will wear o in time
and the tighter jaw line will start to show
after about 2 weeks of daily facial exercises!
In the clinic we have our wonderful
Genie facial toning machine. It is the most
powerful and fastest machine on the market
toning the whole face in only 10 minutes.
The Genie lifts and tones the facial muscles,
in particular around the eye area and the
jowls. Treatment is twice weekly for 5
weeks and then every two to four weeks for

SAUSAGES!
WITH all the recent interest in processed foods generated by the
horsemeat scandal, I thought I would lift the mystery of what makes a
decent sausage.
Rule No.1 you cannot make a great sausage without putting great
ingredients into it. In years gone by the sausage was a way of using up
leftovers to avoid waste. This still continues today to some degree de-
pending on where you buy your sausages from! Personally, I think that
you can tell the quality of your butcher by the sausages he makes. We
take great pride in our sausages, putting only the best quality shoulder
and bellies of pork into them. We remove all rind, bone and any excess
fat, which is why there is no fat left at the bottom of the grill tray. A
sausage needs to be juicy and succulent but not fatty.
Today the Umble Sausage is a gourmet product and should contain
only quality meat that any consumer would recognise as meat. There
are endless lists of ingredients that can be used and there is plenty
of scope to be innovative. James, our sausage maker enjoys blending
complimentary ingredients together when searching for new sausage
recipes.
I think the perfect percentage of meat in a sausage is 75-80%, the
legal minimum requirement being 65%. If you see someone advertis-
ing 90% I would suggest that it is seasoned meat in a skin rather than a
sausage. To be juicy and succulent the sausage must contain the right
amounts of lean meat and fat, rusk (breadcrumb) and seasoning. If
the sausage contains for example, sage, red onion and garlic like one of
our sausages then these added ingredients will aect the percentage
of meat in the sausage. No doubt everyone will have a style of sausage
that they favour.
Last but not least is the sausage skin that the meat is illed into.
Today, more and more butchers and all processors are using collagen
skins for their sausages. These are in essence edible plastic. They are
very convenient in that you can put a 100 yards spool on a sausage
iller and ill it out in seconds with no knots or breaks in the skin. This
is ine, but the result is that these skins are very chewy. We use only
natural sheep or hog skins. The sheep skins are smaller in diameter
and are suitable for thin sausages. The hog skins are suitable for thick,
chunky sausages. These skins are only approximately 30 yards long
and far more time consuming to separate, use and ill out but are a
totally superior product. They also add approximately 50pence to a
pound of sausages. This is a lot of money but I strongly feel that if you
are going to make a gourmet product you cannot skimp on any of the
ingredients.
I occasionally get asked whether we make our own sausages in the
shop. For the record we always have made our own sausages and we
always will. If you buy in a product like this you have no control over
how it was prepared, the ingredients used and even the hygiene stand-
ards of the person making it. Enough said!

This months recipe is a very
straightforward and tasty
sausage casserole.
Sausage Casserole - Serves 4
Ingredients
4 large potatoes
4 carrots
8 good-quality sausages
2 tbsp olive oil
1 onion, chopped
1 garlic clove, crushed
1 tsp paprika
400g can chopped tomatoes
400ml vegetable stock
1-2 bay leaves
Method
1. Turn the oven to 180C/fan160C/
gas 4. Peel the potatoes and carefully cut
them in half, then into quarters. Peel the
carrots and cut each carrot into about 4
or 5 even pieces.
2. Prick the sausages all over with a
fork this helps the fat to run out of the
sausages, so that they dont split open as
they cook. Heat the olive oil in a heavy-
based casserole and fry the sausages,
turning often, until lightly golden all
over this should take about 10 minutes.
Remove the sausages from the pan and
put them on a plate.
3. Add the chopped onion to the cas-
serole (there will still be some oil in the
pan from the sausages) and continue to
cook over a low heat for 5-10 minutes,
until the onion is slightly soft. Add the
garlic and paprika and cook for another
minute.
4. Add the chopped potatoes and carrots
and stir everything around in the cas-
serole so that the vegetables are coated
with the oil.
5. Add the tomatoes and stock (to
measure the stock, you can use the empty
tomato can illed up, it will hold 400ml
of stock) and the bay leaves. Bring to a
simmer (so its just bubbling gently).
Return the sausages to the casserole.
6. Using your oven gloves, carefully put
the casserole into the oven. Cook for 45
minutes, until the potatoes are cooked
through, and serve.

EIGHT young men and one young woman from
the Catholic High School chose to test their
career aspirations by taking up the offer of a
residential course in Halton Barracks, the army
training camp for the Lancashire Regiment.
The barracks which clearly saw service in the
WW2, is located on a hill between the River
Lune and the less romantic M6, permitting keen
east winds to cut a swathe.
Accommodation was basic but clean, regulation
sheets with two scratchy blankets on a steel-
framed bunk bed, with shared washing facilities
outside the dormitory.
They were up at 6.30am with breakfast at 7.30,
room inspection at 8.15 and training at 9.
During the week the students were shown how
to cope in certain specic situations such as,
survival skills, heart start, survival under enemy
re, how to stake out the enemy, operation night
owl where students under cover of darkness
had to rescue some nuclear materials from
under the nose of the enemy and working in a
team to get over an assault course. The course
was topped and tailed by a 1 mile run by which
the students could determine an improvement in
tness levels.
All the trainers had seen service on the
battleeld whether in Bosnia, Afghanistan or Iraq
and yet showed such humility.
Will Carter when challenged by the PT trainer to
race over a course of one and a half miles, beat
him by eight seconds. In contrast when staking
out the enemy under camouage, Marley put his
hand up to ask if he could go to the toilet, which
in effect meant that the team were all blown up!
None of the students who went wanted to be
a soldier prior to this and apart from Rhys and
Callum who would like to join the SAS, they still
dont. But what a learning experience it has
proved to be.
