Local newton Councillors Adrian Walmsley and Tom Parry have used their member budgets to fund the University of Chester to undertake the research work. Cllr Walmsley said: The decision to fund this piece of work comes at a time when, as we all know, the credit crunch is taking its toll on traditional retailing. That is why it is so important to see if it is affecting the local businesses here on the Kingsway Parade which suffered a blow with the loss of a post offce some years ago. Councillor Parry said: It will be very interesting to fnd out the conclusions of the University of Chester report in the months ahead. Both Councillor Walmsley and myself value the Shopping Parade as an important hub for the people of Kingsway and Newton and this research may be of beneft for other shopping parades in the Borough. natalie Russell, Researcher at the University of Chesters Centre for Labour market Development said: Both myself and my colleague retail expert Phil Smith hope that the results will help shape the future of the Kingsway Shopping Parade for the beneft of all of the community. Information is being gathered in a variety of ways. Local residents and users of the shopping parade can contribute by completing an online or paper survey before Sunday 31st march. The survey can be flled in online: Kingsway Shopping Parde survey Paper copies can be requested by ringing natalie on 01244 512861. Dynamics Dance and Fitness is a community based fit- ness company run by Laura and mark Harrison, offer- ing fun effective community based classes in Hoole. After graduating from Chester University they found a lack of fitness classes available with- out committing to a lengthy gym membership so set about changing this, In June 2010 Dynamics Dance and Fitness opened at Chester Enterprise Centre. Originally a studio based in the Enterprise centre they moved into community venues af- ter the huge fire back in December 2010, just five months after they opened! With the help and support of their clients and local com- munity they reformed and have now been running classes for nearly three years. Classes include regulars, such as Zumba, Bootcamp and Pilates and personal training, as well as Kettlebell classes created especially by Mark designed to burn fat and tone up like no other class! They are also the first in Chester to run BarreConcept, an amazing ballet, pilates and yoga inspired workout designed to give you a long lean dancers body! Laura returned to teaching recently after giving birth to the youngest Dynamics mem- ber Noah, who was born in April 2012 and now teaches postnatal classes for new mums from in and around Hoole. Susan L Business Trainer Now spring is finally in the air, many of us may be about to set about our annual rituals of spring cleaning the house, clearing the garage or sorting out the shed. But this could also be a perfect time for a spring clean of your finances. How long has it been since you reviewed the interest rates on your savings? How are your ISAs performing? Are your Pensions in the right place? Is your Will up to date? With the new financial year shortly upon us, the 6th April brings with it a refreshed range of allowances which are always more valuable if made use of at the start of the tax year, benefiting from a full years tax efficiency. Although we continue to face a gloomy outlook for the economy amid talks of a potential triple dip recession, the markets have actually performed well so far in 2013. However the squeeze on household budgets continues to be felt at both ends. Ever increasing taxation is impacting upon net household income while the average family budget is increasing as inflation bites. Many tax allowances have been reduced, whilst higher earners are also missing out on child benefit payments. Understanding your own tax position and how you can make use of the various allowances available to you has never been more crucial in gaining maximum benefit from your hard earned money. REVIEw Many people may have acquired a plethora of pension plans over their working lives. Having something in place is better than nothing, but do you know what these plans will be worth to you in retirement? How much do you need to live on in retirement? Taking time to review your existing plans will give you a realistic idea of what kind of retirement you can look forward to. Next to pensions, ISAs are the most tax efficient investment vehicles and likewise many people have amassed a range of different funds and accounts some from the days of TESSAs and PEPs. With interest rates at an all-time low, knowing what rates your Cash ISAs are paying is vital, with many paying less than 1% shopping around can add 100s to your annual interest payments. With 2,942 ISA funds available in the UK (source: Trustnet, IMA Unit Trusts & OEICs), which ones do you hold in your ISAs and where are they in the performance league table? YoUR FINANCIAL FUTURE Are your concerns more around what will happen to your assets upon your death? Could your assets come under threat from the costs of Long Term Care? Does your current Will provide for your beneficiaries in the most efficient way? Or has it not kept up with changes in legislation? Taking some time now to review some or all of these areas will help you get better organised and build a clearer picture of your financial future. We help our clients with these areas by taking the hassle out of the process, conducting research into their existing holdings and providing clear and concise recommendations without obligation. Urban and rural collide in MCs debut solo show Hoole Roundabout April 2013 25 24 Tel 01244350398 www.hooleroundabout.com We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK get- ting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an afordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesnt require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing whats needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of the floor space in an average home. So shouldnt you be making the most of it? And thats where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by mak- ing the loft easily accessible. And thats all it does. Its not a generic building company, and its not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insula- tion. Its what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...Our average job is about 290 and only takes a few hours to complete, says Adam. And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure. The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. More Than Loft Ladders is al- ready a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful instal- lations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...Its such a great and cost efective way for people to gain the extra space they need, added Adam. It was a depressing sight and one that I am pleased to have kept from my Mum - the horticultural guru, Queen of bed, border and basket and keeper of the finest garden in the land. Looking around at the desolate landscape of damp and decay it hard to imagine that I can ever get it back to its former glory. The moss growing between the flagstones injected the only colour and it struck me as odd that I was so overpowered by it. Compared with the gardens in which I grew up, a postage stamp-sized backyard should be so much more manageable. The lack of lawn to mow, beds to turn over and boarders to attend to limits my challenge to an ivy clad trellis separating my space from my neighbours and a number of terracotta pots in which I struggle to keep heathers, ferns and succulents. I want to prove the apple doesnt fall too far from the tree. Its the age old notion of wanting to impress your parents. But here begins the trail to the epicentre of my problem. What impresses me appears not to impress others. For example, tonight, I come home from work and I try to accomplish epic missions before the microwave hits zero. I congratulate myself with a cuppa and settle down to watch the Chase. When I came back from the garden centre with a boot full of multipurpose compost, I willed my Mum to phone. I wanted her to interrupt. I wanted my other half to say hold on, he is just in the yard, Ill go get him for you. But no. She knows when Im sat in my pants eating a bowl of Coco Pops. Its like a sixth sense - or a well- hidden webcam that I am yet to discover. I planned what needed digging up, what needed re-potting and what part of the yard we could actually enjoy without having to straddle the ever increasing number of recycling containers. I dragged stuf around, plucked snails from the larger pots, scrubbed a lot of the green from the flagstones and gave everywhere a general tidy. I was quite proud of the results and found myself taking my phone from my pocket and photographing the yard. I played around with the image on instagram, filtering it and adjusting the hues and tones until I got an impressive looking final image. I then posted it on facebook and waited for some recognition. I labelled it before wanting to give the impression that it was a starting point and that another would follow labelled after. What I didnt convey was that I had spent the best part of the day out there. I needed to fine tune and control the snapshot and in doing so, I realised that what it is all about. Snap shots. We live in awe of other people and their successes because that is what we see. The social networking of updates, allowing us to take control over what others know about us. What others see. Our conversations in the pub steer away from the topics we want to avoid and we encourage those for which we want to claim bragging rights for. The pictures we frame in our houses are rarely of ourselves and thanks to digital photography, we can delete the unflattering images before anybody else sees them. When mum comes to visit, there will be no talk about missions to Mars, DIY or surgical procedures. Instead, she will run her fingers through the heathers; enjoy the smells from the lavenders and sit on a bench in my backyard enjoying the late spring sunshine. Ill want her to think that the garden is always this immaculate and the sun always shines in Hoole. Well talk about the positive things we have both been up to and leave the negative stuf for a rainy day. Ill avoid Coco Pops and will most certainly not be sitting out there in my pants. And when she smiles and says how perfect it all is, some of that smile will be a subtle nod to her own relief that she found it this way again. That all those time she called and didnt interrupt me was just bad timing. I had been working my fingers to bone to get it just so. Just as she did for all those years that I was growing up. Just like she continues to do now. 26 Tel 01244350398 www.hooleroundabout.com Hoole Roundabout April 2013 27 Get ready for Spring! That all those time she called and didnt interrupt me was just bad timing. I had been working my fingers to bone to get it just so. Just as she did for all those years that I was growing up. Just like she continues to do now. HooleRangersFC.com THE weather has decimated the fxtures for both Hoole Rangers teams since november, so this report will cover all fxtures since that date Hoole Rangers FC 1st team have played six fxtures since the last report in November. During December, we had a tough Senior cup tie versus Chester nomads 1st team, currently doing well in West Cheshire Division 1. After a really hard fought game, with both sides having chances to win it, Hoole lost out by a single goal, 4-3 in probably our best performance of the season. This gave us a real boost and we had hoped to continue this good form in our league games. However, in our next game away to 2nd placed Kelma, we had seven players missing and were soundly beaten 4-0. Due to weather, we played no more games until February, when we had 2 really good results in the league, beating Ellesmere Port by 2-1, followed by a great 4-0 victory over newton Athletic. However, in early march, we played 2 cup games, and lost out in both. The frst loss was to Division 1 side FCVillage, where we probably played the worst game this season, and fully deserved to lose by 3-1. We followed this with another cup game against a strong Shaftsbury side, where despite being 2-0 up just before half time, lost our way badly in the 2nd half, going down 4-2. This was a real blow as we were very capable of winning both of these cups. Second Team The 2nd team, in Division 1 only played 4 games during the last four months. In our only game in December, we had a great 5-3 victory over Ashton. In January, we played 2nd from bottom team, Chester nomads III, who put out a really strong side and we lost 4-0. In February we lost 2 further games, against Chester Celtic by 3-1 in a game where we trialled playing on Astro-turf at Chester College. Following that defeat we were pitched against league leaders, Lache, and were soundly beaten by 8-0. Changing room extension There has been some progress on the changing room extension project, we had a very positive meeting with LIVE! Trustees ( new Scene based charity and building lease holders) to discuss the required 25 year lease, and we are now waiting for a meeting with Cheshire West and Chester council, after which we should be in a position to fnalise 25 year lease arrangements for the pitch and changing rooms, and then start the Planning Permission process. Assistant manager wanted We are currently looking for an assistant manager for the frst team working with Adam Bebbington, and also a manager and assistant manager for the reserves. We hope to have these positions flled by the end of this season so they are in place for 2013/14 pre-season. management experience is not essential as we will provide support while people learn the ropes, but a working knowledge of amateur football is desirable. Good motivational skills, plus an ability to bring in new young players would also be an advantage. If anyone is interested in these roles, please get in touch, via the e-mail address below. Sponsors As always, we are looking for sponsors for next season, helping fund items such as tracksuits, match balls, match fees etc. or maybe helping with the changing room refurbishment project. If any individuals or businesses are interested in working with a very ambitious local football club, please contact me on the e-mail or mobile number given below. HOOLE HISTORY ON RIGHT TRACK! mEmBERS of the Hoole History and Heritage Society spent a fascinating day at the national Railway museum in York on Saturday 9th march. They were using the museums unique Search Engine research facilities to explore the coming of the railways to Chester in the 1840s. The visit was an opportunity for a fact-fnding mission, part of their Heritage Lottery funded project. maps, books and plans were consulted and copious notes and photocopies taken to start to build up a picture of those early days and to start exploring the lives of the people involved. Chesters iconic railway station and the early housing in Hoole around it featured largely in the researches. members are now working to create an accessible set of resources to show the public how much the physical appearance and character of Hoole have developed from the 1830s. His search for a purpose, a cause, an ideal, a mission and the like is largely a search for a plot and a pattern in the development of his life story -- a story that is basically without meaning or pattern. Whilst I would agree with Hoffer that story telling is important I do take issue with him that the story is without meaning. Let me tell you one of my favourite stories that I hope might illustrate what I mean Once there were three trees on a hill in the woods. they were discussing their hopes and dreams when the frst tree said, Someday I hope to be a treasure chest. I could be flled with gold, silver and precious gems. Then the second tree said, Someday I will be a mighty ship. I will take kings and queens across the waters and sail to the corners of the world. Finally the third tree said, I want to grow to be the tallest and straightest tree in the forest. People will see me on top of the hill and look up to my branches, and think of the heavens and God and how close to them I am reaching. After a few months later, a group of woodsmen came upon the trees. Looking at the frst tree one said, This looks like a strong tree, I think I should be able to sell the wood to a carpenter ... and he began cutting it down. At the second tree a woodsman said, this looks like a strong tree, I should be able to sell it to the shipyard. When the woodsmen came upon the third tree, the tree was frightened because he knew that if they cut him down his dreams would not come true. One of the woodsmen said, I dont need anything special from this tree so Ill just cut it down. When the frst tree arrived at the carpenters, he was made into a feed box for animals. He was then placed in a barn and flled with hay. The second tree was cut and made into a small fshing boat. The third tree was cut into large pieces and left alone in the dark. the years went by, and the trees forgot about their dreams. then one day, a man and woman came to the barn. A baby was born and placed in the hay in the feed box that was made from the frst tree. The tree could feel the importance of this event and knew that it had held the greatest treasure of all time. Years later, a group of men got in the fshing boat made from the second tree. A great storm arose and the tree didnt think it was strong enough to keep the men safe. then one of the men stood up and said Peace and the storm stopped. At this time, the tree knew that it had carried the King of Kings in its boat. Finally, someone came and got the third tree. It was carried through the streets as the people mocked the man who was carrying it. When they came to a stop, the man was nailed to the tree and raised in the air to die at the top of a hill. the tree came to realize that it was strong enough to stand at the top of the hill and be as close to God as was possible, because Jesus had been crucifed on it. I believe the story of our lives is rooted in meaning and purpose and the moral of this story is that when things dont seem to be going your way, always know that God has a plan for you. If you place your trust in Him, He will give you great gifts. Each of the trees got what they wanted, just not in the way they had imagined. We dont always know what Gods plans are for us. We just know that His ways are not our ways, but His ways are always best. Story of our liveS Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 22 years.
