New pool and gym essential to towns new leisure village

Feedback from the Councils consultation on Ellesmere Ports iconic 15 million sports and leisure village has been revealed with swimming and athletics being desirable elements of the final design. More than 800 local people took part in the first round of consultation for the new facility which will see a stateof-the-art leisure offer on the preferred former Stanney High School site, with concept designs including an eight court badminton hall with a seating capacity of 1400, competition swimming pool and 80-station gym. Close to 400 participants shared their details and wished to be involved in future stakeholders meetings. Of the 400 respondents 40 percent belonged to a local sports club and 48 percent took part in competitive water sports. Executive Member for Culture and Recreation, Councillor Stuart Parker, said: I believe that our concept designs are extremely exciting and will offer our residents in Ellesmere Port, and indeed visitors from further afield, high-class facilities. Most importantly this needs to be a community facility, fully inclusive and accessible to all, and I hope local people will work with us to ensure that local needs are met. There is clearly interest in a 50m pool. We are looking at the evidence for this and we will be considering it at the Executive meeting in April. A sports hall, a well-equipped gym, caf and 50 metre pool were all highlighted as desirable elements to be incorporated into final designs. Other sports highlighted by respondents as important in the new build were netball, indoor bowls, indoor athletics and water polo facilities. Local member, Councillor Justin Madders, said: There is still a way to go before we have our final design but I think the number of people who have contributed their thoughts to this consultation says that the new leisure facility means a lot to residents. There will be a second consultation before final plans are decided upon so I would urge local residents, stakeholders and community groups to get involved to make sure we end up with a facility that meets all of the communitys needs and aspirations. The chance to shape the towns major leisure facility is a once in a generation opportunity and I hope that we use it to show that the town deserves the very best. The feedback showed significant support for a 50m pool at the facility and I will continue to make the case for that to be delivered. Visit the Cheshire West and Chester Council website for more info.

Princes Trust unveil a knock out project

Ellesmere Port Princes Trust Team 59 have unveiled their community project at the Golden Star Amateur Boxing Club. Their project was to repaint the fitness suite of the boxing club and also help to prepare a juice bar area, making the suite look more presentable and ready to be used. The team were also asked to design and paint exterior boards to draw more attention to the club. It is hoped that by making the gym more attractive it will help encourage more people to use the facilities. Finally the team was asked to construct plinths at the back of the building to support a portable cabin that can then be used as an office space. The event attended by Mayor of Ellesmere Port Cllr Pat Merrick officially unveiled the work completed by the team. Programme leader John Walkey said: The team has worked extremely hard to create something special for the gym and we are delighted with the results. We hope our efforts will encourage more residents of Ellesmere Port to use the facilities. A special thank you must also go to all the businesses and individuals who have supported the project without the donations of time and resources it would not have been possible. The Princes Trust Team Programme is a national initiative providing training, qualifications and work experience to improve peoples confidence, self esteem and chances of finding employment or training opportunities. Anyone aged between 16 and 25 and interested in joining the next Princes Trust Team Programme, starting on 6th May 2013, can contact John on 07837 057 489 or Trisha on 07785921705.

Dame Sarah Storey, with Dennis Wall of West Cheshire Athletic Club, and Cheshire West and Chester Council leader, Mike Jones.

Great times for athletics club

WEST CHESHIRE ATHLETIC CLUB is celebrating success. The Stanney Oaks-based organisation was named Cheshire West and Chester Sports Club of the Year at Winsford Lifestyle Centre. West Cheshire AC was one of four clubs that had been short-listed for the Club of the Year Award, and chairman Dennis Wall received the winning shield and trophy from Cheshire West and Chester Council leader, Mike Jones, and Paralympic gold medalist Dame Sarah Storey. Dennis said: I was honoured to receive the Cheshire West and Chester Sports Club of the Year Award at the ceremony in Winsford. West Cheshire Athletic Club has experienced a surge of interest from the community in the last 12 months and attracted nearly 100 new members since the 2012 Olympic Games after organising a very successful Come and Try Session at the Stanney Oaks Athletics Track in August. During the last year West Cheshire ACs juniors progressed to the UK Finals in Birmingham, the seniors squad won the Northern Track and Field League Division Two West title, and the juniors competed in the UK Young Athletes Track and Field League Northern Premier Division, as well as being represented at the UK School Games in Londons Olympic Stadium. John Driscoll, Alan Morris, and Sheila Whitta officiated at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in London, and 14 members became fully qualified to help coach at club training sessions. West Cheshire AC has forged strong school-club links, supporting extra curricular activities, hosting secondary schools competitions and helping to organise primary school championship events. And West Cheshire AC is now keen to build on this latest club success story by supporting events for the local community in the months and years ahead.

Urban and rural collide in MCs debut solo show

CountryBoys Struggle
by Maxwell Golden Monday 22nd April, 7.30pm Dunham On The Hill Youth Club WA6 OLX
Produced by The Contact Theatre Manchester

For tickets please email andyjones1000@tiscali.co.uk For further information about Cheshire Rural Touring Arts please call Claire Smith or Jenny Henry (Rural Arts Officers) on 01244 972835

CountryBoys Struggle has been devised in collaboration with Martin Stannage and Baba Israel. Writer/Performer Maxwell Golden says: Its about what its like living in a rural area and wanting to make urban music, then moving to the city and finding its not what you expect especially when your heart and soul is on the beaches and with the community you grew up in. Although it is performed predominantly through the aesthetic of modern UK Hip Hop theatre, the real emotion underlying the story is always of upmost importance. CountryBoys Struggle integrates music, poetry, MCing, as well as physical comedy to reflect both rural and urban environments. Contacts Artistic Director Baba Israel says: Im really excited about directing Maxwell Goldens CountryBoys Struggle. DOLLY & TED

These two young cats were leftin a carrier on a gentlemans doorstep. They are nine months old, and are vaccinated and neutered. Their photos do not show how lovely these two youngcats are. Dolly is a petite long haired beauty and Ted is the handsome shorthaired one. Our fosterer says: These cats have at some stage been mistreated as every time I moved my arm they jumped back as if I was going to hit them. They are now beginning to trust me and havestarted playing. Dolly and Ted are very close to each other so we would like to find them a home where they can stay together. As we do not know how they would react to young children or other animals a quiet home would be best.

If you are thinking of giving a cat a home do consider the gentle and lovingolder cats that need a secW ond chance for a happy home. Sometimes they get overlooked in favour of kittens and younger cats, w but they really do have greatbenefits of their own! These Senior Kittizens are usually very loving as theyare used to living in a home environment and receiving lots of love andattention from a previous owner. Stanley is three years old and very friendly. Unfortunately Stanley has the FIV virus so must be kept as an indoor cat. He will make a very loyal and loving companion. He follows his fosterer around everywhere and when she sits down Stanley thinks it is especially so he can sit on her lap. Stanley is the perfect companion, he is happiest on your knee, or on the newspaper you are trying to read. Cats with FIV make ideal indoor companion animals.
