Busy time at garden centre
BELLiS Brothers Farm Shop & Garden
Centre, in Holt Village, is holding an Easter
Egg Hunt from 22nd March until 1st April.
Only 1 per entry.
On Thursday 25th April, 7pm, Bellis
Brothers is the venue for a Gardeners
Q&A.Tickets for this event are 8 to include

AT our April meeting on18th April at 1.45pm
in St Marys Parish Hall we are pleased to

CH4 HISTORY
QUEENS PARK HIGH SCHOOL
The cast and crew from Queens Park
High Schools recent production of Beauty
and the Beast, which featured over 100
students engaged in acting, set design,
lighting and sound. They are pictured with
local radio station mascot Chester the Cat.
A group of students added some weight
to their learning when they got to try out
a suit of armour that was brought in for
the show. Brave student Jim Williams was
chosen to try on the suit, which provided
a great set dressing and artefact to
demonstrate medieval battle techniques.
Year 8 students spent the day in art and
design creating an art installation to
contribute to the Beauty and the Beast
exhibition.
They used basic kitchen condiments to
bring their creations to life.

A group of students
from years 10, 12 and
13 made a visit to the
Trafford Centre to see how
customer service is used
as part of the centres
business strategy.
And Year 9 geography
students visited the
centre on an enrichment
day recently to learn
how it operates. They
even designed their own
promotional material for
the shopping centre.
BaD weather forced the QPHS Rowing
Club Pudding Races to be held indoors.
The crews took part in a gruelling
ergo session which ended in a tie. a
presentation was made to former coach
Peter Brown, who was persuaded out of
retirement to run the event.
at the Inter Regional Time Trial, in
Northwich, QPHS Rowing Club provided
a J16 double with Leon Langmead and
Chris McCartney and a WJ13 quad with
Samantha McIlwaine, Rona Fishburn,
Felicity Weir, Eve Finlay and cox Lucy
Clegg.
Leon and Chris achieved the fastest
time in their group and the quad were
also fastest despite frequent clashes of
blades.
as a result, QPHS crews go forward to
the Inter Regional Regatta on 28th april.
Leon and Chris also fnished in the top
15 at Boston Rowing Club to ensure they
made the prestigious Easter Camp for
potential GB rowers of the future.

RECENTLY there has been an increase in bicycle thefts, house and garage
burglaries and cars broken into in the Handbridge area
Cheshire Police are urging residents do the following
1. Lock Vehicles when unattended using any security devices you have
2. Leave nothing in your car of any value
3. Lock all garage doors and garden sheds
4. Use a good bike lock when leaving your bike
5. Lock up bicycles to something fxed inside your garage or shed
6. Lock all doors in your house and use any security devices you have
7. Report any incidents and anything suspicious to Cheshire Police on 101 or
999
If you would like your bicycle marked by the police and added to the Immobilise

Other priorities are:-
We have had reports of drug activity happening in the alley way at the rear of
Eaton Mews.
We have acted quickly to these reports and together with other PCSO we have
monitored the area and a daily basis. This has result in two males being detained
by local Police offcers and have been dealt with accordingly.
We also have had a spate in bicycle thefts in and around West Cheshire
College site and Overleigh St Marys CE Primary school.
We are urging people to make sure they are securing their bikes up properly.
We have found that there has been an increase of activity of Vagrants
congregating around suspension bridge.
Local PCSOs and Local Police Offcers along with the Cheshire Council safety
Wardens are continuing to monitor the area and made a number of stop check and
moved the individuals along.
Next Police surgery will be on Saturday 6th april 12noon-1pm on the Old
Dee Bridge Handbridge

SPRING LAMB
Last month I felt I had to address the subject of the Horse-
meat scandal in my Blog. as a result my planned recipe for
Easter spring Lamb has been put back to this month.
Easter this year has come very early and as such at the
time of writing I would expect there to be very little spring
Lamb available and for it to be prohibitively expensive for all
but the most special occasion. there is a cheaper alternative
in English Lamb which is the Hoggett which is a sheep in its
first year between December and its first shearing. They
are still tender and have plenty of flavour but will have been
born well into last year.
Many people are unfamiliar with the diferent cuts avail-
able for roasting. this month I thought I would explain
them.
there are three cuts available in Lamb for conventional
roasting. they are leg, shoulder and loin. Each have charac-
teristics that may appeal to some more than others.
Firstly, the loin can be boned or sold whole or in part on
the bone. Most popular is the best end of neck or rack
of Lamb which is the cutlets in a joint. I would generally
chine and French trim this as it can make a superb centre
piece for a dinner party if prepared as a Guard of Honour
or a Crown Roast. a Guard of Honour| is a pair of racks
with the ribs French trimmed and interlocked like soldiers
swords in a military Guard of Honour. the Crown Roast
is a pair of French trimmed racks bent and strung up to form
a circle like a crown.
Next is the very traditional leg of lamb depending on how
many people you are feeding you could buy a full leg or a half
leg. the shank end (or foot end) is very familiar to everyone
but the other end which is called a fillet end also makes a
lovely joint and is a uniform depth all the way along. the
meat is lean and flavoursome.
Lastly, there is the shoulder. this tends to have marbling
and more ingrained fat and is the most flavoursome of the
joints. It does have a troublesome blade bone to negotiate
when carving but this can be removed easily by your butcher
to make for simple carving.
All of these joints are suitable for stuffing and marinades
as lamb is a meat that lends itself very well to the addition of
herbs and seasonings (a few of which are garlic, rosemary,
oregano, mint and mustard). todays recipe is anchovy and
Mustard Glazed Leg of Lamb (shoulder or loin may be used
if preferred).

Anchovy and Mustard Glazed
Leg of Lamb
Serves 8
Prep time: 10 mins
Cook time: Medium 25mins per LB/450g plus
25mins Well Done 30mins per LB/450g plus
30mins
Ingredients:
1.3kilos/3Lb lean boneless leg of Lamb
4-5 garlic cloves peeled and cut in slivers
4 large sprigs of rosemary
Rapeseed or extra virgin olive oil for drizzling
sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
15mils / 1tbsp wholegrain mustard
4 or 5 anchovy fillets in olive oil, drained and
finely chopped
Large knob of butter slightly softened
5mils/1tsp honey
Method:
Place your lamb on a chopping board then stud
it with the garlic and rosemary. Gently insert the
tip of a knife about an inch into the flesh of the
lamb then push a sliver of garlic and a couple of
rosemary leaves into the hole left behind. the
more of these you do the more highly developed
the flavour. I would recommend between 10 and
20. the lamb can be prepared up to this point
well in advance, even the night before.
Preheat the oven to gas mark 4-5/180-190c.
Rub the lamb all over with the oil and season
well with sea salt and freshly ground black pep-
per, put it on a baking tray in the oven and cook
according to how you like your lamb.
Meanwhile blend the mustard, anchovy, butter
and honey into a paste. about 25 minutes before
the end of the cooking time smear or brush this
over the skin of the lamb and return to the oven.
When the glaze has taken on a golden brown
colour, remove the lamb from the oven, transfer
to a large warm plate, cover with foil and leave
to rest for 5-10mins somewhere warm before
serving.
this dish will be delicious with some roast
potatoes, whatever seasonal greens you can lay
your hands on and a crunchy radish salad with a
light sour cream dressing. Enjoy!

Schools independence day
FRiDAY 1st March was the frst day for the school as an academy.
What academy status means for that it is, in effect, a government-funded independent school.
This means it can make its own decisions about the curriculum and how it busy services.
Assistant head teacher Stephen Gauller said: This builds on the independence we have always
had as a Catholic school, and puts us fully in control of our own destiny.
We have had excellent support from our staff and the Diocese in completing the changeover to
academy status, and we are now setting out on a new chapter in the history of our school.

April brings many
delights to the
garden from
beautiful delicate
fowers and
wonderful fresh
foliage.
One of my favourite
shrubs is Amelanchier
lamarkii or Snowy
mesphilus, which is well
named as the shrub is covered
with white fowers in April
in amongst the pale, bronzy
new leaves. Although it likes
moisture retentive, lime free
soil I have grown it on neutral
to alkaline soil.
If you want a climber, then
Clematis alpine and Clematis
macropetala varieties are in
fower in April. Both have
bell like fowers in pale pink,
or blue on vigorous growth
which will happily cover
trellis. Easy to grow in a sunny
sheltered site or Clematis
alpina will take a more
exposed position, in well
drained soil. Flowers
are produced on stems
grown the previous
year so cut back after
fowering.
Spring perennials for
ground cover in shade
includes Pulmonaria
with their blue, white, red
and pink fowers, depending
on variety, then attractive
foliage for the rest of the
year. Good for smothering
weeds in shady places but you
must keep their roots moist
or you will have a collapsed
plant in dry spells! Another
shade loving perennial are
the Epimediums. There are a
number of varieties that will
produce tiny delicate, pale
yellow, white or pink
fowers in spring with
rounded heart shaped
leaves for the rest of
the year colouring in
autumn.
Once the weather is
warmer, you can start
planting carrots, lettuce,
radishes and other salads
outside. Look out for frosts
and cover small apple or pear
blossom with feece to try and
protect it from frost. Last year
I lost the crop on one apple
tree but the second, fowering
later, gave me some fruit. Also
divide congested clumps of
perennials such as Geraniums
or Hostas.
If you like visiting gardens
I would suggest checking
out the National Gardens
Scheme which raises
money for charities through
opening gardens. You can
see local gardens with ideas
for planting you can use
yourself and often buy
plants. Saighton Grange
near Chester is great
for spring fowers and
bulbs and Briarfeld
near Burton will give
you great ideas for
woodland planting.
