Announcements The Department of Internal Medicine is pleased to announce that Jerome D. Cohen, M.D., will be appointed Emeritus Professor, Department of Internal Medicine, effective July 1, 2007. At the same time, Dr. Cohen will retire as a full time faculty member in the department. Dr. Cohen has had a long and distinguished career at Saint Louis University in the Division of Cardiology. He joined our faculty in 1971 so he has served more than 35 years. Dr. Cohen received his medical training at Johns Hopkins University and Washington University School of Medicine, did his internal medicine residency at New York University and cardiology fellowship at Washington University before joining our faculty. He rose through the ranks from assistant professor to become professor of internal medicine in 1986. He served as chief of the medical service at St. Louis County Hospital, an important academic affiliate for Saint Louis University at the time. During the same period, he was Director of the Coronary Care Unit at Saint Louis County Hospital. He has been a very active and well-respected teacher of medical students, residents, and fellows. From 1978 to 1983 he was course master of preventive and social medicine at Saint Louis University School of Medicine and has been a regular sight on the 9 south cardiac floor as a bedside teacher. Dr. Cohen has had a distinguished professional career conducting research into preventive cardiology.

He has been a consultant to the NIH and other national bodies. He has been a principal investigator or participant in several national cooperative studies related to prevention of heart disease. Dr. Cohens work has been recognized nationally by the receipt of several awards from the American Heart Association St. Louis Chapter. He has authored more than 150 original publications. The Office of the Provost recently announced the selection of four Centers of Excellence: Center for Environmental Science, Center for Aging Successfully, the Walter J. Ong, S.J. Center for Language Nina Tumosa, Ph.D. and Culture, and Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies. The Center for Aging Successfully (Division of Geriatric Medicine) is a collaborative project between the School of Medicine, Doisy College of Health Sciences, School of Public Health, College of Public Service, Graduate School, and College of Arts and Sciences. It will build on existing strengths among the collaborators to: 1) facilitate a variety of interdisciplinary research programs; 2) develop interdisciplinary educational programs in research, teaching, clinical- and community-based geriatric care; and 3) provide state-of-the-art services to the regions elderly population. The Center is expected to generate at least $5 million in extramural support and contribute to the Universitys reputation as a leader in gerontology and geriatrics. State-of-the-art services will be made available that will improve the health, safety, and quality of life of our elderly population. The Centers principal investigators include John Morley, Nina Tumosa and Susan Tebb.

Marilyn M. Maxwell, M.D., has been appointed to serve as an at large member of the Medical Executive Committee to represent the general interest of the physicians on the medical staff of SLUH. This appointment is a very nice compliment since only physicians who are seen as leaders and are widely respected by other physicians on the staff are nominated. What do you mean a selfsustaining clinic in the slums? We cant even do that in the U.S.!

One clinic, already running as part of an orphan feeding program, was provided a microscope and other simple office lab equipment and the pharmacy was stocked with inexpensive medications. A second clinic site has been identified by the Congolese Christian leaders to build a simple two-room clinic in another part of town. An additional $5,000 is needed to complete this clinic structure. Daniela Salvemini, Ph.D., Research Professor, Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, has been invited to present at the Sir John Vane Symposium in Rome, June 7-10, 2007. (Sir John Vane was the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Medicine, 1982.) Dr. Salveminis lecture will focus on the role of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in the pathophysiology of pain and inflammation. Awards Erin L. Bakanas, M.D., was recognized at the thirtieth annual Women of the Year Luncheon on April 26, 2007 in the St. Louis Room of Busch Student Center. She is my Doctor to increasing numbers of University employees. They appreciate her personal concern and follow-up, in spite of a busy case load. She is known for her support of commitment to the teaching mission of the School of Medicine in her work with students and residents, especially in the area of medical ethics. Her research in this area led her to complete a Master of Arts in Health Care Mission at Aquinas Institute of Theology.

Timothy D. Rice, M.D., questioned the doctor in the slums of Nairobi, Kenya in 2004. As Dr. Rice began to hear how clinics could be run utilizing nurse practitioners, church volunteers, a defined scope of practice, and low-cost medications, an idea was born. Fast forward to May 2007, Democratic Republic of Congo. As part of an ongoing relationship with eight local churches in Congo, Dr. Rice was asked to return to Congo for 2 weeks to help establish clinics for the poor in Kinsasha. Adapting the model seen in Kenya, these clinics are to serve the poor in the community and to especially address the needs of families that have taken orphans into their own homes to raise. For $1.00 a Congolese child or adult can see a health professional. For twenty cents they can get a months supply of medicine. The fees pay the salaries and restock the pharmacy.

Thomas J. Olsen, M.D., (top photo) and Rafi Kevorkian, M.D., (bottom photo) were each awarded the Distinguished Teacher Award by SLU medical students at a ceremony on April 30, 2007 in the LRC Auditorium. Up to eight awards (four basic scientists and four clinicians) are given each year but none have been awarded since 2003. Faculty are nominated by students. A committee made up of students and faculty select the recipients based on those nominations. Fred R. Buckhold, III, M.D., a 2007 graduate of the Medical School and an incoming medical resident, was named the recipient of the 2007 Scholars Program Award. To be eligible for a scholarship, the candidate must have obtained a post-graduate training position in the Saint Louis University Internal Medicine Training Program through the National Residency Matching Program. Furthermore, the successful candidate must have demonstrated excellence in medical school as demonstrated by class rank, performance on USMLE Part I, or performance in combined basic science and clinical disciplines and have graduated from an LCME-accredited medical school, as outlined in the selection criterion of the Scholars Program brochure. Research Grants y Michael Ombrello, M.D., rheumatology subspecialty resident, has received a $40,000 post-doctoral research fellowship award from the Arthritis Foundation, Eastern MO Chapter and a $25,000 Rheumatology Fellowship Program Award from Amgen.

A teaching portfolio can serve as a critical tool in the promotions process. This one-hour workshop will review criteria for promotion for faculty in the clinical educator track and provide an overview of how a teaching portfolio can be used in promotions and as a career development tool. The workshop is being offered twice: Wednesday, June 6, 2007 at noon in LRC 113, and Thursday, June 14, 2007 at 4 pm in LRC 113 and will be presented by Mary Ruh, Ph.D., Stuart Slavin, M.D., M.Ed., and B. New Web Site Feature A new feature has been placed on the departments web site, http://internalmed.slu.edu. The Division Directors meeting minutes are now available on-line. An email was sent to Internal Medicine faculty, residents and staff on May 23, 2007 which announced this feature and included the username/password.
