No, you cant have a sick note Used correctly, the simple matter of moving our bodies around a bit for about 30 minutes a day can help hundreds of conditions. Exercise carried out wrongly can do more harm than good. So what is correct? A Asthma Many asthmatics believe they cant exercise. But as long as you use your medication before you start, thats not true; in fact, it could be highly beneficial. The key to correct exercise for an asthmatic is duration. Long spells of exercise are far more likely to bring on an attack. Therefore choose exercise classes and team sports where the intensity varies. Beware also of the conditions you exercise in; cold, pollution, and pollen can all trigger attacks and cold air and high altitudes are likely to prove a tricky combination. B High blood pressure Holding your breath is one of the most dangerous things pressure sufferers can do, so they should not swim underwater and could run serious risks when lifting weights. Regular exercise is recommended, as it can help lower blood pressure. C Sciatica and slipped discs These two conditions are linked. The aim of exercising with both conditions is to alleviate pressure on the discs and nerves. If you want to swim, do it on your back or in your face in the water so your back is flat. Swimming with your head out of the water arches the back, which also rules out many yoga positions. Finally, for confirmed discs sufferers, recent trials have shown that discs are under most pressure when we are sitting. So, skip cycling and rowing in favour of more upright activities, like gentle walking. D Skin complaints Eczema and psoriasis can both be aggravated by stress, so calming workouts like yoga are particularly recommended. For other exercises, its not what you do that matters, but the atmosphere around you. A sudden increase in temperature can send blood rushing to the surface of the skin, inflaming both conditions. This is particularly likely if someone is exercising intensely, wearing man-man fibres, which trap the heat. E Migraine While no exercise in itself provokes or treats migraine, if you are an all-or-nothing exerciser who is also prone to migraine you may find that your workouts trigger attacks. Migrainers brains like to be balanced and on an even keel so it pays to be consistent. If you do no exercise for days, then suddenly go out and exhaust yourself, the simple change in routine could be enough to trigger an attack.

TASK II

Read the text and choose the correct answer: A, B, C or D. ( 5 points)

Fog occurs when damp air above the surface of the earth is cooled to the point at which it condenses. Of the two types of fog, advection fog occurs along theocean coast or near rivers or lakes. This type of fast-moving fog, which may cover vast areas, occurs when warm winds blow across a cold surface of land or water. In this collision of heat and cold, the warm air is cooled to the point at which the water vapor condenses into fog. Radiation fog, quite different from advection fog, is immobile cloud-like moisture generally found hovering over wintertime valleys. It occurs on clear nights when the earth's warmth escapes into the upper atmosphere. 1. According to the passage, fog is found when wetness in the air is (A) vaporized (B) cooled (C) dampened (D) heated According to the passage, advection fog is found (A) in valleys (B) in the ocean (C) near bodies of water (D) only in small, enclosed areas In the passage, radiation fog is said to be (A) similar to advection fog (B) found in coastal areas (C) fast-moving (D) trapped moisture hanging over inland valleys According to the passage, which of the following statements about fog is true? (A) Advection fog is caused when cold winds blow across a heated land surface. (B) Advection fog is the type of fog that occurs in small valleys on clear nights. (C) Radiation fog occurs when the cooled atmosphere meets with heat from the earth. (D) Radiation fog generally moves quickly across vast areas of land. The author's purpose in this passage is to (A) explain the different types of fog (B) describe where different types of fog are found (C) discuss advection fog (D) give a scientific description of various types of precipitation

TASK III For questions 1-5 choose the extract which matches the gap in the text. There is one additional extract which does not belong. ( 5 points) Persistent Doubters It has always seemed very curious to me that many people, faced with reasonably good evidence as to the existence of a creature as yet unknown to the science, maintain an air of the utmost doubt and skepticism. Why should they not throw their hands in delight at even the faintest chance of such a windfall in this shrinking world?

Unfortunately, people whose intelligence you had no cause to doubt suddenly leave you bereft of speech at the length to which they will go to prove that nothing new can exist under the stars. 1. ____________ Since that date, there has been an endless succession of equally arrogant individuals who adopt the same blinkered attitude. 2. ____________ The strange psychology underlying peoples excessive skepticism is one of the most intriguing facets of the story. It is indeed a puzzling reflection on our purportedly rational civilization that the testimony of so many reliable witnesses, often offered under oath, should have been considered inadequate as proof that there is something unknown in the Loch. 3. ____________ What I am advocating is a reasonably open mind. There are after all plenty of strange things in the world which we now accept but were once dismissed as ridiculous and impossible fantasies. Think of the courage it must have taken to set out to describe the first duck-billed platypus. 4. _____________ Yet they have only to travel to New Zealand, where they will find the tuatara which has come down from the Pleistocene age unchanged. And this is not the only survivor: the coelacanth could not be more prehistoric if it tried. 5. __________________ So let us no longer take refuge behind the barricade of leaping salmon, shadows, dead stags, logs of wood, branches and acrobatic otters. Instead, let us have the courage to admit that there is something large, strange and unknown to science in the cold waters of the Loch. A B C D E F So many people state that a prehistoric monster (that contradictory term beloved of the press) could not exist today. I am not suggesting for a moment that one accepts the existence of an unknown creature without sifting the evidence with great care. The saga of Loch Ness Monster makes fascinating reading. It would be a sad comment on human being if a creature that had survived for so long died out due to human pollution before its existence was even acknowledged. It was the scientist Cuvier who produced the arrogant statement that there were no new large animals to be discovered, for he knew them all. Time and again we hear of intelligent witnesses who are told by scientists that they are drunk, insane, partially blind or at best clever hoaxers.
