Fellow members of Salem, As many of you may know, Salems fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30. As we approach the end of this current fiscal year, we find that we are behind on our budget. The Congregation approved a balanced budget, but we are running a deficit and our Finance Board projects the deficit will be $23,000 by the close of the fiscal year. All parties have done their utmost to hold down expenses, both in setting the budget and in paying attention to what has actually been incurred. The expenses are not the cause of our deficit, the reason for the deficit is that our current year offerings/contributions are lagging by a projected amount of $32,000. We anticipated only a very modest increase in offerings from the 2011-12 year to 2012-13, but this years contributions are actually running behind last years amounts. In order to get the budget into balance by June 30, we are going to have to raise that extra $23,000. We want to bring this to your attention. We ask that you prayerfully consider if you are in a position to make any additional contributions, no matter how small, to help us to reach our budget goal. Please continue to pray for Salems ministry, and that with Gods blessing, we will resolve our budget issues. Thank you. Donna was an active community and Church member and would be pleased that her friends and family want to help others in need of lifesaving blood products. Sunday Bible Study Opportunities

Study on 1 Corinthians Pauls first letter to the Corinthians shows that sin is rebellion against God and that Gods grace is the only cure for sin. He instructs the Corinthians that Christs death on the cross is the atonement for our sins and insures our forgiveness. Join Woody Babb at 9:30 am in the Fellowship Hall from April 7-28 as he leads this 4-week study on 1 Corinthians. A Closer Look: Digging into the Scriptures Every week, this study will focus on the same lesson and topic as the Sunday School, but with life application for adults. This approach encourages growing in faith as a family by allowing each member to discuss what they learn in Sunday School. It helps reinforce the lesson for everyone! Dont have a child in Sunday School? No problem! This study also serves as a refresher course for those who have studied these lessons before or as a great introductory course for new students of the Bible. We meet every Sunday at 9:30 am and beginning April 7th, we will move back to the 7th grade classroom. The upcoming study topics will be: April 28 Jesus Sends the Seventy-two (Luke 10:124)

Wednesday Christian Education Opportunity

Catechism Study: A Review of Lutheran Doctrine Do you miss being fed by Gods Word on Wednesday nights with your Christian brothers and sisters? Has it been a few years since you went through confirmation? Are there aspects of Lutheran doctrine that you would like to learn or review? During the worship service, have you ever asked, What does this mean? Then be sure to take advantage of this Christian education opportunity! Catechism Study: A Review of Lutheran Doctrine will walk through Martin Luthers Small Catechism in order to help provide a strong doctrinal foundation. Vicar AJ Espinosa will be leading this study that begins on April 10th and continues through May 22nd. We will meet Wednesdays at 6:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall. And whether you have an old hardcover written in German or a new electronic version on your iPad, be sure to bring your Catechism. Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, will assign calls and vicarages Wed. May 1st. The vicarage placement service is at 3:00 PM, with the call service to follow at 7:00 PM. Both services are held in the seminary chapel and are open to the public. Salems second-year field education seminarian, David Mommens, will be assigned his vicarage. Our fourth-year seminarians, Brett Hartwig, Kirk Hulvey, and Adam Ray, will be placed in their first congregational calls. Week-at-a-Glance April 28-May 5, 2013
Third Grade Focus Weekend The third graders and Mrs Rudsinski have been keeping busy. We just completed our Wax Museum project where we researched a famous person, did a report, and acted like that person in a wax museum. We had over 200 students and parents come through. It was fun, and we learned much about some famous people. Did you know that Milton Hershey had a ticket on the Titanic, but didnt go because his wife was sick? We wonder if we would have Hershey bars today if he made that fateful trip. We are looking forward to our Farmsteading Field Trip where we will work as student did in the 1800s. On this trip, we will be cooking our own food, chopping wood, making candles, and various other jobs. Out class also has a field trip planned to Fitzs Bottling company where we will see how root beer is made and learn a little about the history of St. Louis. On Wednesday, May 15th, we will also welcome 3rd graders from 4 other Lutheran schools for our annual Third Grade Trivia day. That day we will test our knowledge and also have fun with the other third grade students. In 3rd grade, we learn our multiplication facts and also how to write in cursive. In the next few weeks we will begin our pencil project where we make our own business decorating and selling pencils. A lady form Montgomery Bank came to talk to us about how important it is to save our money. Our teacher is Mrs. Rudsinski. She has been teaching in Lutheran Schools for 27 years. 24 of which have been at Salem. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 Kathy Brown, fourth grade teacher at Salem Lutheran School, in Affton, was awarded the Jeremiah Award from Lutheran Association for Special Education (LASE) on April 17, 2013 in a ceremony in front of the entire student body. The Jeremiah Award is presented to a general education teacher who has gone above and beyond to meet the unique education needs of students in the classroom, especially those students with disabilities. Kathy is the first recipient of the award from LASE, an educational service agency that partners with Lutheran schools in the St. Louis area to meet the educational needs of children with disabilities and special needs. Lori Christiansen, LASE Executive Director presented the award to Kathy for excellence in inspiring students to become lifelong learners, for her collaborative efforts with LASE special education teachers, and for giving her students hope and a future.

Years of Service Join us for coffee and cake between the 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. services to recognize the following teachers for their years of service: Mrs. Laura Frank has taught at Salem for six years. She earned a B.A. from Concordia University-Wisconsin. During her six years in education, she has taught grades 5-8 at Salem and is currently our 5th grade teacher. She most enjoys the kids! They can be challenging, but they are so much fun to talk to and work with. She thinks Salem is special because of the AMAZING staff! Everyone is so dedicated to making Salem a great place to learn and grow. They truly care about the success of each student. God is quite evident and is doing good things here at Salem. Laura is married to Peter and they welcomed their first child, Sawyer, in October, 2012. Mrs. Carrie Hartwig has taught at Salem for five years. She received a BA in Education from Concordia St. Paul. She also has six graduate credits in Special Education. During her nine years in education Carrie has served Lutheran Schools in Baton Rouge, LA and Allentown, PA. Carrie now serves as the 1st grade teacher at Salem. She likes that her students are so curious and want to learn. Carrie also coaches 7th & 8th grade girls volleyball. She also has the pleasure of directing the K-2 Kids Choristers and being involved in writing devotions and planning for team meetings. She thinks Salem is special because of the family atmosphere, everyone is so welcoming. Carrie is married to Brett, who is in his final year at Concordia Seminary. Carrie and Brett are anxiously

awaiting Call Day on May 1, when they will find out where their next adventure will be. They have two daughters, Megan who is in Kindergarten at Salem, Sarah who is one year old and are expecting baby number 3. Mrs. Krista Kimmich has taught at Salem for five years. She is our preschool 3 teacher. She has been a member of Salem Lutheran Church, and School her whole life. Krista has a B.S. in Deaf Education, and a M.A. in Special Education from Fontbonne University. This is Kristas 9th year of teaching including St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf in Chesterfield, special education teacher at Salem. This is Kristas 2nd year as Salems preschool 3 teacher. She loves teaching preschool. She is able to use her previous teaching experiences to facilitate early speech, language and social skills to three year old children. In addition to teaching the Preschool 3 children, Krista enjoys working morning Latch Key. Krista is married to Steve and have two children, Nathan and Lauren, who attend Salem Lutheran School. Mrs. Kathy Miller has taught at Salem for nine years. Kathy received her B.S. in Education from the University of Missouri. She started teaching at Salem in 1991 and taught 1st grade for 4 years. Before returning to Salem in 2007, she taught part-time at Word of Life and also did pre-school screening for Lutheran Association of Special Education. Mrs. Miller is currently the morning aide for the Pre-K class and the afternoon teacher. She and her family are members of Salem. She is married to Rich and has a daughter Allison who graduated from Salem in 2009 and Emily who will graduate this year. Mr. Jason Miller has taught at Salem for six years. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education with a minor in German from Concordia University Wisconsin. He has also completed 6 graduate credits from Concordia Wisconsin. Prior to coming to Salem, Mr. Miller served at Lutheran schools in Chicago and Mayville, Wisconsin. He teaches 6th grade and middle school science. He has also taught 5th and 7th grade at Salem. Jason enjoys teaching middle school, "Because there is something new every day. Mr. Miller also serves as Salems Athletic Director and coaches track, basketball, and boys volleyball. He is married to Stephanie, who teaches Kindergarten at Salem. Jason and Stephanie have two children: Brandon and Jonah, who attend Salem. Mrs. Kelly McCord has taught at Salem for five years. She received a B.S. in Biology from Valparaiso University, a M.A.T. from Washington University, and a B.A. in Music from the University of Missouri- Kansas City. She is certified in Kodaly Level 2. Kelly has taught at Riverview Gardens Senior High School in St. Louis and Christa McAuliffe Elementary in Shawnee Mission, KS. Kelly currently teaches K-4 music at Salem. She enjoys something from each age group. I like the eagerness of the little ones and their willingness to participate, and I like that the older students are able to understand and accomplish more challenging activities. Kelly is married to Duane and they have three children: Nathan is a junior at Lutheran High School South, Noelle a freshman at Lutheran High School South, and Nicholas, who is in heaven after fighting cancer for 3 years.

Kindergarten
We have had a busy spring! We have been learning about life cycles. We even went to the zoo and learned about the life cycles of an owl, toad and a millipede. We are hatching chicken eggs and are eagerly waiting for them to begin hatching. While we were at the zoo we saw that there were penguins sitting on their own eggs waiting for them to hatch. The class has been working all year to improve their literacy skills or as they say it their reading. It is so cool to have them reading to me during the day. They still love to hear stories but they are taking a lot of pride in their reading also. Their writing skills have improved greatly. The students are working on putting works together to make complete thoughts that are meaningful to them. Here are a few of the kindergarteners thoughts on what we are doing now We are waiting for our chicks to hatch. We have a brood for our chicks when they hatch. We will protect them. We work on math. We have been doing hard work writing our numbers 11 30. We have nap time. We have been working hard on how to learn to read better. We work on Working on Words and Working on Writing and Read to Self everyday! We have been working on how to read. We like reading a lot. We try to work our brains to learn. Dear Members and Friends of Salem Lutheran Church and School, We wanted to take this time to say Thank you! We appreciate all of the support that we receive from our church and school family. We have been working very hard since this summer to raise 11

money to take our class trip to Florida and you all have really helped us out and have been so generous! The class is so excited for the trip in May. But in order to go on this trip there are some requirements that have to be met. We must display a high level of respect and responsibility while we are at school. By doing this, we build the trust of our teachers and the chaperones that are taking us on our trip. Some of the ways we have shown this at school is by taking care of the paper recycling every week for all of the school classrooms, being chapel buddies to the pre-school children, ushering during school chapel services, raising and lowering the flag each day, leading the morning prayers and pledges for the school as KGOD announcers, acolyting at church, and setting up tables and chairs as needed for different events. We also are team leaders for our monthly School Theme Team Meetings. Our teams meet together th (Pre-school through 8 grade mixed groups) every month and do an activity together to learn about th the theme for the month. The 8 graders all practice leading the activities in our classroom and then we help the team teacher lead it for the group. It gives us a chance to interact with and help all the younger students and hopefully set a good example. Another requirement that we have is to be a good student. This means keeping up with our homework and having grades that reflect our true abilities. We meet with our homeroom teacher every two weeks to go over our grades and discuss improvements if necessary. When we go to Florida, we do many fun and exciting things! We take a bus and drive all night to arrive at New Smyrna Beach in the morning. After we leave the beach, we head to Kennedy Space Center. Here we tour the museum and grounds and take another bus out to the viewing tower to see where the Space Shuttles have lifted off. Then we finally head to our hotel. During the rest of the week we visit Epcot where we travel around the world, Magic Kingdom, Universal Studios, and Sea World. We are thankful that our school allows us to go on this exciting trip. For many of us, this is the first time we have ever visited these places. Throughout this trip we learn how to manage our own money, cooperate together in groups and look out for one another, conduct ourselves in a positive Christian manner, and meet deadlines and requirements on time. Every day begins and ends with Bible readings, devotions, and prayer time and we grow closer as a group through these activities. We have raised money during the school year to cover the costs of our trip. This is also a way for us to gain an understanding of the value of special events such as this class trip. Salem slow-pitch softball team

When: Mondays from May 20 to early August. Where: Clydesdale and Wilmore parks Contact: Justin Phelps, jphelps03@gmail.com or 309-472-1878 Salem is forming a mens slow-pitch softball team to compete in the Lutheran Church Softball League in St. Louis this summer. This double-header league is played on Monday nights at Clydesdale and Wilmore parks. The season begins May 20th and concludes in early August. Games are played at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. We will play the same team twice each Monday night. The league fee is $250, which includes field rentals and softballs for each team. This fee will be divided among those on the team.

Mike Scholz has accepted a call to serve Lamb of God Lutheran Church and School in Las Vegas, NV. His last day at Luther Memorial in River Falls, WI will be Sunday May 26. ******************************************************************************** Salem Lutheran Church and School is blessed with a wonderful staff and lay leaders who make our church and school a special place to serve the Lord Jesus Christ. One of the great treasures we enjoy at Salem is gathering each Saturday and Sunday for services in Gods house. Christ feeds our staff and leaders with his Word and the Lords Supper so they can continue caring for the spiritual and material needs of his people. For our staff and leaders, worship with their families in church is a special time of the week. If you have an urgent spiritual need, they are always ready to help in any way they can. But if the need is less pressing or requires extended time to address, please consider speaking with our staff or lay leaders at a time other than the Saturday evening or Sunday morning service. This will allow them to preserve this precious time in Gods house with their families for worship, prayer, and praise.
