THE GAYTON GROUP OF PARISHES www.gaytongroupofparishes.org

The April issue of this magazine saw the last of our regular updates from Lanky Hill. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mike Chamberlain for his contribution to the magazine over many years. I have always enjoyed reading the latest news from Lanky Hill and I wish him well. Please see the article from Sarah Renwick on page 31. An event enjoyed by many last year was the Teddy Bear Trail around Gayton. Sarah Renwick is organising one again this year. Let's see even more gardens full of teddys this year. See page 21 for further details, including how to get your teddy on the map. There are also events to raise much needed funds for the ALB (p9) and Gayton (p27) Village Halls. We are lucky to have our Village Halls, including East Winch. They are run by volunteers and are used by all of us from pre-school groups to exercise classes. Why not drop into one of the events and help support these valuable local resources. Don't forget to let me know of any news or events that are happening in our villages. My contact details are below. Best wishes, Catriona Copy in by 18th May, please. Delivery date is 31st May.

TO ALL PARISHIONERS
Christian Aid Week 13 to 19 May 2013
th th

BITE BACK AT HUNGER

Dear Friends
A strong Christian ethos is to think of others and not of ourselves. Or, put another way, Jesus emphasised the two most important 'commandments' are to love God and love your neighbour as yourself. Christian Aid is the official international relief and development agency covering 41 church denominations in the UK and Ireland. For 68 years it has been empowering people in poor countries around the world to find their own solutions to the challenges they face. But they can't do that without our help. Each year, Christian Aid Week brings churches together in an act of witness, love and solidarity that is changing the lives of thousands in need. Did you know for instance that tonight 1 in 8 people around the world will go to bed hungry? This is a scandal not only to our political and social structures, but a challenge to the heart of what we believe God has called us to do and to be. Christianity is about self-giving love, helping to serve justice and build community. We are called to walk humbly with God, and from that place discover what it means to be 'Good News'. Christians Aid believes that hunger can, and will, be defeated. During Christian Aid week we will be praying for our neighbours around the world, for an end to their hunger. Prayer is good, but it's not enough. Prayer should lead us also to action. Can I encourage you, this month, to give a little thought to those who are not as fortunate as you. Collection envelopes for Christian Aid will be available through our churches and in some of our village shops, you may even discover one dropped through your door. Please don't ignore them but take a moment to think - can I give a little help? You could change a life! Filled envelopes can be returned to any of our churches. Let's see if we, as a community, can take a bite back at hunger. Much love Rev'd Jane

ASHWICKEN, LEZIATE & BAWSEY NEWS

Leziate WI Meeting
March Meeting There were 16 members present for the March WI meeting who sang 'Jerusalem'. Sadly our Secretary, Jean Withers, was unable to be with us as she was poorly. It was agreed to send flowers with a card expressing our good wishes. We know what a good job a secretary does on our behalf. A Beetle Drive was enjoyed with lots of fun and hilarity. Violet Giles received a birthday mug. The raffle was won by Janet Jary. Six members had attended the Group meeting at Swaffham. The speaker was David Palmer, Auctioneer, who appears on television in 'Flog It', wearing his wonderful colourful patchwork waistcoat. It was a good evening and worth travelling to Swaffham. April Meeting President Eileen Baxter welcomed 11 members to the meeting. Gaywood Friendly Group has invited Leziate members to join them on a coach trip to Boston for shopping, then on to Walpole St Peter's Flower Festival and a meal in the hall opposite. This is always a lovely day out in June. Unfortunately David Smith was unable to give the talk and slide show on Peru due to a teaching engagement. Elsie Bush brought a flower quiz, which was won by Myrtle Roberts and Mary Ryan. Winners of a Foreign Food Competition were first Janet Eason and second Ali South. Georgy Morris received her birthday gift. Refreshments were served by Janet Jary, Ali South and Janet Eason. Wendy Twite

ALB Village Hall

Could you spare a little time to aid the cause? Our committee has shrunk a bit over the last year and to continue to keep the hall running, improve facilities and provide events for the local communities, we are in need of more people to join us and spread the load. We are a friendly bunch, enthusiastic but not obsessed. We usually meet once a month to plan events, keep an eye on maintenance issues, etc. We are really lucky because we have a pretty full list of regular hall users and, with the additional income from our fundraising events, we are able to plan even more improvements to the hall. Interested? I do hope so. Please call me on 01553 630319 for a chat, Pauline.

We have had a busy half term educating our children in road safety. Our Year 1 children recently took part in Step on It training run by some of our trained staff. The children went out into the school car park and along East Winch Road to learn about moving safely around cars, where to cross safely and actually practised crossing the road. All of the children in our school have now received this invaluable training. Our older junior children have also been out and about learning about On Road Cycling led by Tracey Lingfield (County Road Safety Team). Leziate Lakeview Park kindly let us use their car park and junction on to Brow of the Hill Road to practise safe starts and stops, signalling and turns. The children will be tested once they have completed their training. On the subject of road safety, we have a 40 mph speed limit outside our school along East Winch Road, which we consider to be far too fast and dangerous. We continue to campaign for reducing the speed limit to 20mph. If you would like to support us in our campaign, then please contact the school on 01553 630352.

Leziate Parish Council Report

The Parish Council met on Wednesday 8th April 2013. The Parish Councillors were delighted to receive a letter from two children of the Parish. They were asking about the back field and requesting that some play equipment could be installed here. It was discussed at length and it was reported that this area did, at one time, have plans for a skateboard park and a multi games area. There was concern over the safety of this area, as it is hidden from view. However, the Parish Council agreed to contact the two girls and invite them to the next meeting so they could see what ideas they have and see if there is a way forward. A letter from NCC was also discussed regarding the mining of silica sand. The Parish Council felt they should be on their guard for any planning applications, as it was stated that the County Council will consider planning application for silica sand favourably if they address the shortfall that will occur now the MIN39 site has been withdrawn. Reports about the high water levels in the sailing club lake were considered. Some councillors thought that this may impact on the wildlife in the area. After some discussion it was agreed to contact the Sailing Club to ask if they were aware why this might be and also if the planning application for powered craft had advanced in any way. A local resident has contacted the Parish Council to see if they would be involved in a litter pick at Bawsey lakes. The Parish Council thought this was an excellent initiative and, if the SNAP teams are unable to supply black bags, then the Parish Council would fund

these up to a certain value. Sibelco have agreed to dispose of the rubbish, once collected. There was some disappointment expressed when it was reported that Cllr Smith attended a meeting at the Police HQ in Wymondham and there was no allocation of funds, at the moment, for Homewatch. The Parish Council felt that this should be supported as it is an integral part of Police work. Cllr Bramwell gave a resum on the progress of the Planning Inquiry into the incinerator. It seems that the programme is slipping and it will probably go on longer than originally planned. Cllr Beales also reported that the Borough Council has agreed to extend the budget for the inquiry. The AGM of the Parish Council will be held on 8th May 2013 at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. All Parishioners are welcome and there is a 10 minute open forum where any queries or comments can be made.

EAST WINCH NEWS

Christian Aid Week th th 13 to 19 May.
In mid-May, churches of all denominations will be banding together to collect money to feed the hungry. This isn't just by supplying handouts to the starving, rather by giving the poor a voice, enabling them to secure rights to their land so that it can't be grabbed from them because there is no legal document, and campaigning against tax evasion by large corporations. Once communities are secure, they can look to the future, grow enough to feed their families and earn enough to educate their children. Envelopes for donations will be in churches and shops, or will be put through your door. At a time when many of us are beginning to worry about job security, we can appreciate how much our help matters to the poorest of this world. Please help by giving generously.

RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre

We now have a collection bank for recycled clothes/shoes and also a bottle bank as well as our existing yellow bins for towels, blankets and newspapers. All the bins are by the visitor centre. We are very grateful for any donations you make. Our Open Day this year will be on Sunday, 7th July from 10am to 4pm. Please support us if you can. Many thanks.

Gayton Parish Council News

Meeting held 8th April 2013 Tree Management The Council noted the results of the tree inspection of the trees on the playing field in Gayton. Some remedial work is recommended but does not require any urgent action. The Council agreed to seek quotes for the cost of the work to consider at a later date. Playing Field Car Park At the March meeting, the Council decided to request evidence of a Traffic Management Plan and details of how the School will attempt to educate parents on where to park, before it would be willing to agree to allocate a portion of the playing field car park for the School teachers to use. The Clerk reported at the April meeting that the School Headteacher had withdrawn the School's request to use the playing field car park in light of the concerns raised by residents in the area and the Council's subsequent response to the School. Highway Improvements Mr Beales visited several sites with Andy Wallace, Highways Engineer, to ascertain whether they would be appropriate to install gates on either side of the road in a bid to slow traffic by making the road appear narrower. Andy agreed that gates could be sited on Winch Road and on Lynn Road, at the Litcham end. The Council also recognised the speeding issues on Grimston Road and agreed to make a bid for funding for two pairs of gates for Winch Road and Lynn Road and one gate to be installed on

Grimston Road as there is not enough room for a pair on the verges here. The applications for funding must be in by 30th April, so the Council will formally decide on the quotation for the manufacturer and installation of the gates it will accept at the May or June meeting once it has been informed whether it will receive funding. Leased land The Clerk reported that, following further discussions with NPS regarding the surrender of the lease, a fence must be erected between the owned and leased land before the surrender can take place. It was acknowledged that the responsibility for this lies with the Jubilee Hall Management Committee who owns the land adjacent to the leased land. Mr Beales reported that he knew of a possible new tenant for the owned land who would be willing to install a fence as part of the tenancy. Speedwatch It was noted that nearly 6 months have passed since it was agreed to resurrect the Parish Speedwatch team. The Chairman is still waiting for confirmation that he can vet forms and Mr Grant has only just received a list of names of new volunteers to join the scheme. It is hoped that the team will be up and running soon. For the full minutes of the meeting, visit www.gaytonnews.co.uk. The next meeting is planned to be on 13th May at 7.30pm. This will be preceded by the Annual Parish Meeting starting at 7pm.

Gayton Jubilee Village Hall

The Hall's AGM was held on 12th April. It was indeed a reflection on this time in which we live, as there were no members of the public, only representatives from two organisations that came along. The Village Hall is historically a very important part of our local community. Whether a babe in arms, a school age child or adult; there is, at sometime during any week, something for you to join in with. Unfortunately, with the horrendous rises in the utility bills and general living, we Trustees at the Hall are finding it harder to raise funds to meet these costs. We want to be able to continue to keep up the high standards that we have set, and the public have now come to expect and appreciate. To do this another 1,000 per year is needed. Please support us and come along to our public events. We can't do it if you don't help. The Gayton Jubilee Hall, built in 1887 and added to over the years, has seen in these past six years a huge refurbishment inside and out. It may not be a large Hall but it has a very unique ambience which is not found anywhere else. The listed events are all in aid of the Jubilee Village Hall. All donations gratefully received. Coffee Morning Saturday 11th May 10am till 12noon. Homemade cake stall, plus more Coffee Morning Saturday 15th June 10am till 12noon Homemade cake stall, plus more!

Gayton WI
Well, the cold weather certainly seems to have gone on and on a bit this year, which reflected on the numbers attending our April meeting. Now the sun is shining and the weather improving, we hope that all members will be fit and well and look forward to seeing them at our next meeting. For those of us who were able to attend, it was a very enjoyable evening. We had lots of new events to discuss (so watch this magazine and village posters for details) together with ideas for our next year's calendar. Our speaker this month was a lady from the Samaritans. She gave us a very detailed talk on the inception of the charity, the very varied and sometimes very difficult problems the 'Sams' deal with and the recruitment and training of their volunteers. No one, and no problem, is ever too much. We had our raffle and competition, which this month, was 'A Happy Poem'. Tea and home-made biscuits followed. Our next meeting is on the 7th May, at 7.30pm in the Jubilee Hall. Our competition will be to see who can bring as many new pennies with different dates on them as possible. I expect there will be a lot of piggy bank raiding going on for this one! Kay Shambrook

Gayton Evergreens
Non members welcome for a fee of 2. March Meeting On 20th March forty plus members met at the Carpenters Arms, East Winch for Lunch. A meal of ham egg and chips followed by apple crumble and custard, was heartily enjoyed amongst jolly good company. No matter where we are there is always a raffle and this was no exception. We also played the football tote, winners of five pounds each were Jane Scudamore and Sandra Pepperell, rounding off our lunchtime capers. April Meeting Wednesday 17th April found Evergreen members on a coach bound for Boston in Lincolnshire, where it was market day. As the coach travelled along the A17 the sight of thousands of beautiful golden daffodils adorning the fields really did make it look as though spring had finally sprung. We arrived about 10.30am and went about our own way. Some chose to visit the beautiful St Botolph's Parish Church (known as the Boston Stump), where they serve morning coffee and cakes. We met up again at 2.30pm to head off to the Bay Tree garden centre. On arrival the raffle was drawn. We spent the rest of the afternoon looking at tempting things for the summer garden. I think it is fair to say some were tempted a little too much. I hope the summer blooms reward them. Upcoming meetings 17th May, 2.30pm, Gayton Jubilee Hall. We will once again welcome Jenny Sparks, who has visited us before giving a talk on her Dexter Cows. This time she will talk about her experiences with sheep. We know that it will be a jolly meeting rounded off with afternoon tea. 22nd June, we meet in the Gayton Jubilee Hall for a Strawberry Tea priced at 2.50. For information please ring Kath: 636178

Looking up to Lanky Hill

I drafted this article sitting in the restaurant of the hotel chain Lenny Henry is so fond of near Old Street Tube Station in London, so Lanky Hill was well out of sight. 'Out of sight' is where it is going to remain for us all, now that Mike Chamberlain wrote the last missive from his house on the hill in March. Many of us will have fond memories of Jake the older, Jake the younger, the antics of the bird life and his annual daffodil display which is truly splendid (not to mention his teeth!). The ladies in his life have often been mentioned but not always in the best of light, however, he might take comfort in knowing that the central heating thermostat is a 'venus and mars' thing! I watched Pointless in my hotel room after I checked in and one contestant told viewers that he had recently retired and, in response to being asked what his interests were, he replied 'keeping the wife happy'. Now there's a thought Mike! My colleague lent me The Times newspaper on our return journey and in it I found the following letter which I felt had the right 'flavour' for this piece: Sir, I was excited to read (Apr 3) that eating mackerel will add two years to my life, because I am a collector of added years. I added ten years when I stopped smoking, two when I gave up white sugar, three when I began eating bran for breakfast, six when I began going to the gym. Before continuing with these grisly tasks, I would just like to confirm: these added years to run consecutively, not concurrently, don't they? Thank you Mike for your many consecutive years of 'A View from Lanky

Hill', we have had much fun reading your news and hearing your country lore and we wish you and the daffodils a flourishing spring. Sarah Renwick

Incinerator update
As Henry Bellingham MP gave evidence to the inquiry he raised many issues including the County Council's 'last minute switch' to the 46million more expensive Cory Wheelabrator bid. The Planning Inspector is expected to send her recommendation to the Secretary of State for Communities & Local Gov Eric Pickles around July 2013. In the meantime, instead of crossing our fingers and hoping for the best, we all have the opportunity to take control of our own destiny. If the 2nd May 2013 election shows a decisive swing in favour of reforming Norfolk County Council, the impact could be dramatic. If you share the view, that the incinerator must not be forced on people, it is necessary to vote and above all do so wisely. Most, if not all, candidates declared their apparent opposition to the incinerator. However, out of 14 West Norfolk County Councillors only 3 distinguished themselves by standing up for us. The inquiry has taken longer and cost more than expected. This favours Cory Wheelabrator because NCC agreed to pay their legal fees with our money. For KLWIN it is a real challenge to meet the ongoing cost, which is why our fundraising events are so necessary. Please come to as many as you can. 10th May, 7:30pm The Jeremy Irons - Candid Brady Film 'Trashed' will now be shown at King's Lynn Arts Centre, 29 King's Street. Rogue Traders and Cold Callers

Top Tips from Norfolk Police for keeping your property safe: Always keep your back door locked when answering your front door, so noone can enter your property without your consent. Use a spy hole, chain or window to look at any caller you don't recognise. Always ask for ID. Not sure? Don't open the door. Check the caller is genuine by telephoning their company using the number in the phone book. Use an accredited trader to carry out work at your home. Try the Norfolk Trusted Trader Scheme run by Norfolk Trading Standards. Don't agree to any work or sign anything on the spot. Don't be pressured into having work carried out. Never pay cash up front. Discuss any work you feel needs doing with a relative or friend who can help you find a reputable trader. Call 999 if you think a rogue trader is at your property. Learn, Laugh, Love and be the best that you can be

www.gayton.norfolk.sch.uk You may have heard in the news that all schools will be receiving extra funding for Sport in School. I thought I would let you know some of the ways we will be spending ours to ensure that every child in our school has access to high quality sport!

Equipment Over the past year as a school we have spent several thousands of pounds on sports equipment: rugby and netball to hockey, athletics and rounders. When I arrived at the school in January 2012 there was very little for our Key Stage 2 children. Our intention is to use some of this money to ensure that we continue to have the equipment we need so that all our children can participate in a full range of sports.

Curriculum enrichment is a priority at Gayton Primary School. The children have weekly music lessons from specialist music teachers. We have had dance and drama lessons and workshops. The children have also worked with local artists on whole school projects. We have an excellent range of clubs both after school and at lunchtime. Our aim is to ensure we use it to give all of our children a range of sporting experiences and opportunities. Gymnastics at Lynn Sport Next year our 4 youngest classes will have 10 gym sessions making use of this excellent facility TOP Coaching Our 2 oldest classes will have weekly afternoon sports sessions run by TOP COACHING. Stuart and his team have always run very popular after school clubs and now they will be working with classes every week. Cluster Sports Events As a growing Primary we like to be able to take teams to all of the cluster sports festivals and events. The cost of the coaches to transport the children is high and the funding will help with this.

My latest purchase: A vortex howler for Athletics.

ThinkingWISP Fast Local Broadband

Do you have a problem receiving high quality broadband from mainstream providers? Wireless internet from ThinkingWISP may provide the solution. ThinkingWISP is a partnership between the Norfolk Rural Community Council, AF Affinity and InTouch Systems. It uses wireless technology to transmit a broadband connection across much of north, south, east and mid-Norfolk as well as the Waveney area. The signal is then picked up by customers using a small receiver and all remissions are encrypted for security. It offers a fast way to connect to the internet without the speed, cost or service restrictions of traditional solutions. As its wireless, customers can benefit even if the conventional internet in their area is slow. ThinkingWISP offers four service packages ranging from 3mb 'Home' to 10mb 'Business Plus', with prices starting from 15.99 per month. The service uses very low contention rates (the number of people who share the same band width) to ensure customers receive a consistent, high speed service. To find out if ThinkingWisp is available where you live and for full details of packages and prices visit www.thinkingwisp.co.uk or call 01603 558 001.
