INTRODUCTION
One of the problems man ha had to contend "Ith
throughout the histor) of firearms. has been noise.
Por to discharging an unilenceJ Ncapon. some
shooters have the Icndency to flinch in anticipation of
the muzle bla b thus affecting arcurac). After dis

Gun noise also anracts allcntion. and for individu

Gun noise can be categorized UO three major
cinegones.
I. LM^1LAL ^Lb
The noise Ihe \ eapon's mcchanbm make ..
in order 10 fire a round.
Thi > noise would be leas! nVticeable in a boil aelion
weapon. due to its minimum of moving pan .. . and
mtht noticeable in an open bolt submachine gun Iypc
weapon or .. emi-auto weapon. In rea! practice. ho\
ever. all three weapon systems have been effectively
silenced. examples being the MAC 10/11 submachine
guns anu the RUGER MK I and HIGH STANDARD

2. bL^IL LHALW
The noise a bullci makes *Vhen traveling

When a bullellravcls 3t"uper .. onic veloities [here
will be a sonic crack much like a jei"s sonic t)om.

Extensive modifications to the weapn'" barrel sys

3. MUZZLE A51
Th noise generated by the escape of the

Of all the noises associated with fircanm the 010<1
significant is the mualc blast. \\hkh is caused by
escaping propllant ga' upon bullet exit from the

SOF DR BOTILE
SILENCER
Te following design is one of the simpitsi to
manufacture. leru1 expensi ve and yet. one of the most
effective of aJl disposable silencers.
All that is required for construction isan empty I Or
2 liter plastic soft drink boule. a I or J Y inch hose
damp and some tape.
The boule chm,en for (his purpose mu\, have a
reinforcing ring on the
bottom portion. this i neee
sary (0 prevent the bltle from splining upon dis
charge. There U several brands of soft drink lhal
boH Urink Uc blcncer
have this reinforcing ring. so get one that you will
enjo) drinking.
Thi unit i only effective for a fe\\ ShOiS. as the
noise Ilvel ill increase with each succesi\ V shot.
due
to the enlarging exit hole at the bllom of the
bottle.
Begin tonlruction by measuring the inside diame
ter of the bottle neck with the diameter of the barrel. If
thc diameler of the barrel is smaller. bring it up Uthe
rel]uired size by u . ing decukal tape. (NOTE: With
some weapons you will need to make a slol on the
bUllle neck for Ihe frunt sight. Make it a tight fit!).
Next. slip the I or I inch hose clamp over the
bottle neck and in . tall boule to weapon. Once the
bottle is in placC. position the hose clamp over the
tape and tighten damp. (Make sure Iher\! is a goo
seal between the tape and inside of bottle nlck.)
Check the front sight sial for any ()pening. and us
tape. if necessary. to seal ay leaks.
Lf desired. use some paint to match the "silencer"
to )our weapon's finish.

PIPE AND SOF DRINK
BOTLE CAPS
A > imple silencer can be made using soft drink
bon Ie cap!.
Materials required are abom 20 boule caps. a pipe
in \hich the boule caps fit snugly. an end cap for the
pipe. a I inch or I I inch hose clamp. and ome
electrical tape.
Start to make your silencer b) making a tape bush
ing behind Ihe from sight. II should be just slightly
less in diameter than [he in"idc diamcler of the pipe.
Nex . make a Iol in the pipe for the front sight. Us
BotlcLagblcmcr
ajig saw Oh:lck saw Ucut the slot and fles Osmooth
an) rough edges. The slot must he long enough 5that
there is from I inch to * inch of pipe extending past
the back of the from sight.
Install the pipe tu the gun with [he hosecJamp in the
back of the from sight. (Another acceptable method
for pipe in!wll<.lion is to I;lot one end uf the pipe and
file a notch to onc side. This c3n lhen be slipped over
the front eml of the barel and held in place by twist
ing the pipe so thai il catches behind the front sight).
Proecd by punching and drilling the boule caps
using a drill wilh a larger diameter than the caliber to
be used. Drill end cap making its hole larger than that
of the bOllle caps.
NOTE: When constructing this disposable si
lencer. it is best to leuve [he hole through
the center plcmy large to prevent the bul
let from striking the silencer. if it should
become lipped to one side.
Begin filling the pipe *V ith the bottle cap", ..tacking
thelll all in onc direction with the drilled holes pint
ing towards the end cap. Make sure the I a . t boule cap
has the drilled hole towards the end cap and is half
way out of the pipe. that way the end cap will push
against it whell installed. holding the caps firmly
inside the pipe.
Finally, place a cleaning rod or any 01 her suitable
rod throulh the silencer and into the barrel. this is to
ensure alignment of the caps *ilh the barrel and end
cap. Install end cap. Before fring. remove IhccJean
ing rod.

PIPE SILENCER
Thi one loo!s more complicated than i t reall) is.

wide electical lape.
55
UguabcblcNcct
56
Begin con!truclion by drilling the pipe \ith ftlUr
ro\\s of evenly \paced inch diameter holes. 9
dgrees apart. The numbr of holes "ill be deter
mined bj the lenglh of the pipe. (De burr all holes.
both in'ide and outside afler drilling.)
Next. CUI a 5101 forthc front sight. using ajig !awor
hack SilW for rough cutting and
file!. to smooth the
edges. The slot !ihould be long enough so thatlhe pipe
cxtcnd llbout I inch to one inch pU!tlhe back of the
froll! sight. Try w make it as tight 1 fit :\ po'ible.
Slide the pipe onlo the barrcl. with the front sight in
the sial. Po!.ition the hose clamp behind the front
sight and close to the end of the pipe. Tighten clamp
(use tape to bring up barrel to size. if necessary).
Make sure that the pipe i s snug and tight again'( the
barel to prevent it from wobbling.
CUIlhe piece of soft rubber into a disk shape having
a diameter slightly larger thiln that of the oUlside
diameler ofthe pipe. With a sharp razor or knife make
an "X" 31 the center of the disk. Put the rubber disk
3:.ide for the Illolllent.
Cut out tht rivet in the copper scouring pads and
unfold them. this "ill make it ea!ier to wrap them
over the pipe.
Wrap the copper scouring pads (several !ihould be
used. depending on the length of the pipe). around [he
pipe a tightly as pssible and hold them in place with
the pulm of )()ur left hand. Place the soC! rubber disk
with the" X" at the cenler of the pipe hole. and hold
in place with the forefinger and thumb of your left
hand. Begin taping around the rubbrdbk and roll of
Pi bllcNCcf
copper pads with your right hand. making cerlin the
"X" in the rubbcrdisk is still aligned with the hole in
the pip. (A !implc way 10 assure alignment is 10 pass
a cleaning rod through the "X" and into the barreL)
Uing wide tape will make the job a 101 easier. Extend
the lape far enough to the front s o it will hold the
rubber disk in place.
Oncc the rubber disk is in place . begin wrapping
back. overlapping the tape il you go. Extend the tape
back 10 the front sight covcring the whole "!ilencer"
with IWO layers. Be certain no s ections of the copper
scouring pads a exposed.
