SINGING TRADITIONAL SONG OF WORLDS OLD AND NEW
Tutor: Kathleen OSullivan
Monday 3 - Thursday 6 June 2013
The inspirational Kathleen OSullivan leads this friendly introduction to some beautiful traditional folk songs from England, Ireland, Scotland and America. Discover new songs to sing, or bring along your own favourites. We explore ballads, songs of the sea, traditional childrens songs, songs rooted in a distant past, and more. Subjects range from the bawdy to the the murderous, the amorous to the tragic. Kathleen demonstrates some of the more challenging ornamenting techniques cultivated by folk singers, and if we feel up to it well try some of these out ourselves. Song sheets provided, but some airs we might also learn in the traditional way, by ear.

Kathleen OSullivan in her performances at prestigious folk clubs and festivals throughout the UK and Ireland: North and South, Kathleen offers an insight into her London/Irish cultural duality. Speaking with a pronounced East End accent, it sometimes comes as a surprise to audiences to hear how precisely she replicates the Irish templates, both spoken and sung, that have shaped her psyche and fortunes.
Recognised as a fine exponent of traditional Irish singing, Kathleens residing childhood memories are of listening to the songs of her mother, Laois woman, Norah OSullivan (nee Coss). Although her tuition was informal, Kathleen was immersed in Irish music and song. She has appeared and recorded as a solo artist, as well as touring extensively and recording with renowned Irish band The London Lasses and Pete Quinn for eight years. she has successfully returned to her unaccompanied roots, collaborating in presentations with Irelands premier storyteller, Billy Teare.
