Malcolm X and the 5 & 10 Store

The Honorable Elijah Muhammad use to say that the ingredients to making changes in the weather could be obtained "from any five and ten cents store." Minister Malcolm use to press Mr. Muhammad for the ingredients, but the Messenger never told him what they were. Minister Malcolm was a revolutionary and would have used such knowledge to wage physical war against America. In so doing, he would have accrued a lot of very bad karma.

Physical revolutions tend to turn the revolutionaries into replicas of the oppressors they overthrow.

Elijah Muhammad was a man few understood, not even the people who were nearest to him. "I'm down here in the mud," he lamented, "and nobody can see me."

For 40 years the poor man taught the same thing over and over and the only one of his followers who began to get the real message was Minister Farrakhan. Just as Prophet Muhammad of Arabia used to enjoy his followers recite the Quran to him, Messenger Elijah Muhammad used to encourage his ministers to give him their take on the things he'd taught. Mr. Muhammad would get disappointed when, invariably, they'd recite what he'd taught them verbatim. Only Minister Farrakhan would expand the basic doctrine to its extended implications. At such times the Messenger would clap his hands in appreciation. "When a man gives his seed to a woman," he once said to Minister Farrakhan, "he doesn't want her to give him back a seed nine months later. He wants a fully developed baby." Mr. Muhammad's teachings were seeds that, when developed, could produce the New Islam he prophesied would come. I once had the privilege of helping Minister Akbar Muhammad co-ordinate a project of Minister Farrakhan of flying seven jets full of scientists from Chicago to New York so that the scientists could meet Mr. Muhammad.

During the lecture phase, someone asked Mr. Muhammad a simple medical question, one that even I could have answered. To my embarrassment, the Messenger declined to answer the question. Instead he brought Dr. Abdul Salaam to the podium to give an answer. But in the process, Mr. Muhammad said something that would forever transform the way I saw, practised and responded to his teachings. He said, "I'm not one of those physical scientists. I'm one of those spiritual scientists." There is no doubt that Mr. Muhammad could have answered the question. But he chose to demonstrate that his followers were to take leadership roles in using his principles to perfect the fields in which they had expertise. Dr. Salaam (and others) could, ideally, revolutionize medicine with the dietary and health principles Mr. Muhammad had seeded their minds with. People like Joe Tex, Kool and the Gang, The Delphonics and Etta James (a one-time follower) could transform music. Some people could spiritualize dance. "But them Muslims didn't dance!" Someone might object. It might surprise people that not long before his death, the Messenger told the sisters to dance for him. If memory serves me, Sister Betsy Jean Farrakhan was one of them. And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances. -- Exodus 15:20 I don't want to give the false impression that I was there when that event occurred. Most of what I know about events inside the Messenger's home I learned from Minister Farrakhan, either in public speech or, less frequently, in a personal conversation.

I've only been inside Mr. Muhammad's house once. I had to fly a tape to him from Minister Farrakhan. Before Mr. Muhammad could get downstairs to meet me, I ran out of the house because I didn't feel worthy of meeting a man like him. Business people would one day apply Mr. Muhammad's economic and financial ideas to create a new economic system, replacing both capitalism and communism. Astronomers could draw upon the cosmological concepts to revolutionize physics. I believe all this, and more, was implied by bringing Dr. Salaam to the podium to answer a simple medical question. As "one of those spiritual scientists," Mr. Muhammad was ready to leave the mundane issues to his followers while he focused on guiding the world to the New Islam. But Fate had other plans. Mr. Muhammad never completed his Theology of Time lecture series. He gave 18 lectures and was unable to speak on the 19th occasion. His mission was to give the seeds for the New Islam, not to dot every i and cross every t. "I'm a preacher," he use to say. "My ministers after me will be the teachers." Minister Malcolm would have developed into a spiritual giant if he'd passed his test, his dark night of the soul, his initiation. Alif Laam Meem. Do me think that they will be left alone on saying, "We believe," and will not be tested? And indeed We tried those before them, so Allah will certainly know those who are

true and He will know the liars. -- Quran 29:1-3 A spiritual test reaches the very core of one's being. It challenges the foundation of all that he thought was true and his very idea of who he is. It is a terrible, but necessary, thing. During a spiritual test, nothing you once relied upon stands up to help you. Your husband or wife seems against you. Your friends abandon you. The job lets you down or fires you. The government attacks you. It's like the old song, "I went to the rock and the rock cried out, "I can't hide you." I feel sorry for Malcolm. The sheer weariness of the man during his year of trial was overwhelming. On some level I think the poor man wanted to die, to gain a modicum of peace or, at least, a cessation of pressure and pain. Malcolm, spiritually, was going through the kind of suffering, death and rebirth you read about in scripture. He got killed before the rebirth phase. As Jesus taught that the Kingdom is within you, the ingredients Malcolm sought in the five and dime store were within him. When a woman of man gains control over the five elements and masters the 10 Tree of Life spheres, making rain, hail and earthquakes becomes a relatively minor thing. When you can create and change the climate within it is not that difficult to affect the climate without.
