A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This social studies lesson plan is designed for 5th grade students to learn about how settlers wanted to find a route to Asia, but ended up in North America. This will be the introduction of the unit on American settlement and the thirteen original colonies. This lesson will use the 5th grade Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook United States History (pgs. 122125). B. Target Population: Grade Level: 5th Grade Skill Level: All learning levels Grouping: Whole group discussion: Introduction, Pairs: Activity. Individual: Assessment C. Materials: 5th grade Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook United States History Paper Pencil Poster board Markers and color pencils White board for KWL chart D. H2.5.1 Describe motivations for and expeditions of European exploration of the Americas.

Student-Friendly Standards I can identify the people that were important to American Settlement. I can describe why Europeans wanted to come to America.

E. Procedure: 1. Introduction: I will begin the lesson by telling the students that we will be learning about European Settlement in America. (Prior to this unit students would have already learned about Christopher Columbus and his exploration to America). As a whole group we will have a discussion on why Columbus came to America. Students will give some reasons as to why he came.

I will then ask students, Why do you think other European explorers came to America? On the white board we will create a KWL chart. In small groups students will come up with 2 things they might know about European settlement in America and two things they want to know about European settlement in America.

2. Before reading as a whole group we will go over the three vocabulary words: claim, armada, and invasion. 3. We will begin reading the book pages 122-125. I will stop during the reading to ask students questions and have them reply: (At the end of the first paragraph on page 122) Why did Europeans want to go to Asia? (At the end of the first paragraph on page 123) Where did John Cabot actually end up instead of Asia and what did he find? (At the end of the third paragraph on page 124) What did the European explorers find instead of the Northwest Passage.? (At the end of the fifth paragraph on page 124) Why did Spain and England have conflict? (At the end of the last paragraph on page 125) Who won the battle between Spain and England?

4. Individually students will answer the lesson review questions: 3,4,and5. Students will turn this end at the end of the lesson to be graded. Why did European explorers search for a Northwest Passage? Why was King Philip of Spain angry at England? What bodies of water were named after Henry Hudson? Where are they located?

5. In small groups of 4-5 students will complete the writing activity on page 125 to create a help wanted add. What qualities would a ruler look for in an explorer? Students will come up with a picture, and list their qualities on the help wanted add. 6. CLOSURE: As a whole group students will go back to the KWL chart and fill out what they learned. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? I will assess students using the lesson review questions they turn in.

Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will know students understand the concepts from the lesson if they can describe why explorers wanted to find the Northwest Passage and why there was conflict between Europe and Spain. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think the easiest part to teach will be the reason why Europeans came to America, students will also have built prior knowledge about other European explorations. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I think teaching students about the conflicts will be challenging. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I will have students fill out a cause and effect chart. After the Europeans defeated the Spaniards what happened? Students will write down the effects or aftermath of their battle. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? Students who dont grasp the concepts will be paired with higher learners so they can help out. If students have further issues I can individually help them out. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I think this lesson is pretty solid. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part of writing this lesson plan was figuring out what activity to do.
