Paulist Fathers Fun Facts
2008 marks the 100th anniversary of the Paulists in
Austin, AND the 150th anniversary of the founding of
the Paulist Fathers. Each week we will highlight significant
fact about the Paulists in honor of this special milestone.
Paulist Fun Fact #1
Father George Deshon, one of the original Paulists, was the
roommate of Ulysses S. Grant at West Point.
Straight Lines
“God writes straight with crooked lines,” the saying goes. The
power of Paul’s testimony that everything is junk but knowl-
edge of Jesus and the power of his resurrection is a straight
enough message. And, God knows, Paul had a crooked jour-
ney before his blinding insight straight from God.
Through Isaiah, God reminds us all that the past great works
were as nothing compared to the new creation. “Can’t you see
it?” we are asked, as if we are still wandering along our
crooked lines.
And there is no straighter line than that between the woman
whose misery is intense and the God whose mercy in Jesus is
deeper and more acute. You just can’t beat this kind of good
news.

Third Scrutiny This weekend we celebrate the third of three
scrutinies with our Elect, those who are prepar-
ing for Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at
the Easter Vigil: Julie Chou and Doug Hunt.
These prayers are to assist them in their prepa-
ration for the Easter Sacraments and make firm
their commitment as they enter the Church. Please keep them,
as well as our Candidates for Full Communion, in your
prayers.
5th Sunday of Lent: Solidarity
In his letter to the Philippians in today’s second reading, Paul
speaks about “sharing in Christ’s sufferings,” and as Catholics
today, we know that members of the Body of Christ continue
suffering all around the world. The Catholic Social Teaching
of Solidarity says, “when one suffers, we all suffer” and that
“loving our neighbor has global dimensions in our interde-
pendent world.”
Who is our neighbor, then? Victims of violence in Iraq, refu-
gees in camps in Sudan, 13 million AIDS orphans around the
world, undocumented immigrants here in Austin who are paid
less than minimum wage are all our neighbors. How can we
stand united with the poor and powerless as our own brothers
and sisters?

gees and immigrants from all over the world, especially Latin

Save the Date: UCC Social Justice Workshop
On Sun. April 15, 1-5 pm, the UCC Social Justice Team will
be hosting a workshop on Catholic Social Teachings and how
to apply justice issues to daily life. Breakout sessions of the
workshop will include topics such as faithful citizenship, us-
ing Catholic Social Teachings as a leader, and information

Compass Bible Study!
Meeting on Thursday nights from 7-8 pm in the
Mother Teresa Room, Compass is a fun and laid-
back way to read scripture and get a little more out
of Mass. Every week we spend an hour discussing the next
Sunday’s readings and sharing our faith. We are student run,
student led, and totally low time commitment, so drop by
