Brief Introduction
you are asked to develop, design and execute creatively a fantastic voyage through a micro-biological environment. You are challenged to transcribe a biological process accurately and dynamically and consider ways in which complex ideas and data might be represented engagingly to different audiences.

Bio-scientific Scenario
The Cell Cycle Of A Eukaryotic Cell

Research
The first thing I had to do was figure out how the cell cycle of the Eukaryotic cell worked, so through searching on the internet I found that the cell had phases it would go through before splitting into two, which were the G1, S, G2 and Mitosis phase.

Visual Concept
As I was given the target audience of Key stage four students, I instantly thought of a world created in 8bit since seeing things that are reminded of the past can be nostalgic and make it more enjoyable to watch. Great examples that gave me inspiration to prove that current work was still being done in 8bit was Minecraft and the recent Pixar movie Wreck It Ralph.

Initial Designs

The first piece of art I design was when then Chromotids would be pulled apart, as I had an image in my head of the parts going to pull the chromotids were stretching in different directions until it would reach the chromotids.
7

Initial Designs
I imagined the checking phase to work when the nucleus is checked before it moves on to the next phase, a pixel wall would start to appear in front of the cell, once check it will go green showing it's ready to move on to the next phase where the pixels would then fade.
8

Initial Designs
The top images were designs for backgrounds in my scenes but they felt too organic and the colours were too intense, that I felt it would distract the audience so I then created new concepts to make them look more 8bit and pixelated with the bottom image.

Concept Art

This concept is the starting scene when the cell grows in G1 phase, it was a major improvement from my previous concepts since I wanted the world to look more 3D and have depth.

When then cell arrives to the tunnel to enter the next it is always checked first, this was a more developed idea from my previous concept, instead of a wall building around the cell the tunnels path would be blocked.

Transitioning To Maya

Transferring my 2D concepts to Maya wasnt a difficult task, as there wasnt much to model and they were simple polygon cubes.
26

Adding Texture
The textures for my models required no UV mapping and were mainly created using Blinns.
