EDEL 453: Teaching Elementary School Social Science Nevada State College Spring 2013 Instructor: Karen Powell
History
This museum has two different programs covering Habitats for grades 1 and 2 and Adaptations for grades 3 through 8. Bus will pick up students from the school at 9:15AM and return students to the school at 12:45PM. Students will visit exhibits such as the Treasures of Egypt, the African Galleries, and the Prehistoric Life gallery amongst others. Students will compare and contrast life now and the life in the time period of the different galleries. There will be one chaperon for every five to six students.
Geography
Dr. Graziano will visit our classroom and will lead a 30-45-minute discussion on his trip to Israel, the location of Israel and what he did while he was in Israel. The presentation will focus on what was learned while in Israel- the differences and similarities, for example. There will be about 15 minutes at the end of the presentation for questions.

Students will be able to utilize the National Geographic for Kids and the quizzes that are a part of the site to quiz their knowledge on a variety of geography topics as specific as a Mount Everest quiz or as broad as World Geography facts that have simple questions. This can also be a center.

This sites U.S. National Symbols link contains information on the symbols that make the United States what it is from information on Mt. Rushmore to Liberty Bell and the importance of the eagle. Vocabulary will need to be discussed as necessary and I would use this center for second graders.

Civics
Students will be picked up from the school by buses at 9:15AM and dropped off at the school at 12:45PM. Students will be given a tour of the government building including where officials join to vote. There will need to be one chaperon for every eight to ten students.

Students will welcome a senator from the government of Las Vegas to talk about their role in the government, voting and democracy. The guest will arrive at 10AM for a 45-minute presentation with 15 minutes allotted for questions. The whole grade level will be invited (fifth grade) with teachers on their prep invited to help monitor students.

Students will be able to take a virtual tour of the US Capitol building. As students click through the rooms, they will be presented with information about that room, including links for students to read more about historic events from that particular room. This can be utilized as students are learning about local and federal governments.

Students will be able to follow this link: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/ancient/exploreancient-egypt.html and take 360 degree tours of different pyramids by first reading an introduction/background to the specific pyramid. Provides geography connection by talking about Egypt and History by giving background information on the pyramids.
