A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This social studies lesson is designed for 1st grade students to explore natural resources, their origins, uses, and the importance of conservation. This lesson uses the Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook School and Family (p. 88-91). B. Objectives: NV State Social Studies Standards G8.1.2 Identify locations for accessing basic resources available to the student, i.e., food, water. G6.1.3 Identify patterns of change within the community, i.e., construction. Student-Friendly Standards I can give examples of natural resources that people use in daily life and how people change the environment.

E. Procedure: 1. Refer to notes on TE p. 88 Get Set to Read Explain the Reading Skill students will complete as we read. Introduce vocabulary natural resource

2. As a class, read p. 88-91, stopping to ask questions as indicated in the margins of the TE. 3. Students should take notes and record cause and effect on their Reading Skill sheet while we are reading. 4. Ask questions listed in the margins of the TE as an ongoing check for understanding.

Have children cut out pictures of items that are made from, or use, natural resources. Have students glue their picture on poster to create a natural resource collage.

5. CLOSURE: Discuss the two questions in the Review & Assess section of TE p. 91. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? Ticket out the door: Something in nature that people use is a _____________________. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. Students must complete the sentence with the vocabulary word natural resource. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? The easiest part of this lesson will be identifying the basic resources of water and food. I think it will also be easy to teach about conservation of water as it is something the students are familiar with living in our community. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I feel that the most challenging part of this lesson might be teaching the students the cause and effect aspect of conservation of resources. This might be a new skill for most of them. Children of this age dont always see the relationship of cause and effect. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? As an extension for this lesson, I would use the Extend Lesson 3 (p.92-93) about What Comes From Trees. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For the students who are having difficulty understanding the concepts of this lesson, I would use the Reteach Minilesson as described on the bottom of TE p. 91. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? This lesson is very straightforward and well done but lacks a hands-on activity. I would enhance it with the challenge activity of making the collage with the pictures from the magazines. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? As with every lesson I write, the assessment is the most challenging.
