There are famous historical people that were born in Georgia. Historical figures often had to overcome many obstacles. Were a person is born does not determine who they will become. Famous Georgians influenced people nationwide and beyond. Standards: SS3H2 The student will discuss the lives of Americans who expanded peoples rights and freedoms in a democracy.
B. Explain social barriers, restrictions, and obstacles that these historical figures had to overcome and describe how they overcame them. SS3CG2 The student will discuss the character of different historical figures in SS3H2a. a. Describe how the different historical figures in SS3H2a display positive character traits of cooperation, diligence, courage, and leadership. b. Explain how the historical figures in SS3H2a used positive character traits to support their beliefs in liberty, justice, tolerance, and freedom of conscience and expression. c. Explain how the historical figures in SS3H2a chose when to respect and accept authority.

Performance Task(s) Be sure to indicate: Goal: My goal is to increase students interest in social studies through reading. Role: My role is that of a teacher. Audience: The audience is Ms. Pigees 3rd grade class. Situation: After discussions with Ms. Pigee and after viewing CRCT test scores I determined that social studies is a weak area for students. I decided to develop a reading enrichment unit about famous Georgians that were discussed in class in order to combat this problem. Product Performance and Purpose: I will need books for the media center. I will need Internet access. I will need to choose material that will be interesting to the students. Standards and Criteria for Success: In order to ensure success I will need Availability to the required books from the media center Availability to the Internet A method of involving the students

Session 1

A Brief History Of Georgia I will provide the students with a brief history of Georgia using the book Georgia by Andrea Murphy. The book presents a photographic overview of Georgia. 1. I will engage the students by telling them when Georgia became a state and showing them pictures of some of Georgias attractions. (H) 2. I will show them how to get more information on Georgia by directing them to the New Georgia Encyclopedia website. (E) 3. I will begin the discussion about famous Georgians and inform them about upcoming sessions about three famous Georgians (Martin Luther King Jr., Jimmy Carter, Ray Charles). (W), (O) 4. I will provide a review session where kids can ask questions. (R), (T) 5. At the end of all the sessions I will allow the students a chance to play the Jeopardy game that I developed for the class to see what they have learned. (E-2) Session 2 Martin Luther King Jr. I will provide students a brief history of Martin Luther King Jr. using the book Martin Luther King Jr. by Jonatha A. Brown. The book is a short biography of Martin Luther King Jr.

I will engage students by telling them about the life and musical accomplishments of Ray Charles. (H) 2. I will show them how to get more information on Ray Charles by directing them to the New Georgia Encyclopedia website. (E) 3. I will provide a review session where kids can ask questions. Jimmy Carter I will provide the students a brief history of the life of Jimmy Carter using the book James Carter: Thirty-Ninth President Of The United States by Linda R. Wade. The book describes the life and achievement of Jimmy Carter. 1. I will engage students by telling them about the life and accomplishments of Jimmy Carter. (H) 2. I will show them how to get more information on Jimmy Carter by directing them to the New Georgia Encyclopedia website. (E) 3. I will provide a review session where kids can ask questions. (R), (T) 4. I will review by playing the Jeopardy game that I developed. (E-2)
