Mother's Love

Her love is like An island in life's ocean, Vast and wide A peaceful, quiet shelter From the wind, the rain, the tide. 'Tis bound on the north by Hope, By Patience on the West,

By tender Counsel on the South And on the East by Rest. Above it like a beacon light Shine Faith, and Truth, and Prayer; And thro' the changing scenes of life I find a haven there.

BEST WISHES AND BLESSINGS TO ALL MOTHERS from Fr. Michael L. Zoufal, Fr. Ryszard Czerniak, Fr. Anthony Brooks, Sr. Anna Gorska, Sr. Ewa Szpargala, Sr. Malgorzata Tomalka and the Parish Staff.

ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO Dear Friends in Christ,

May, 2013

On Mothers Day, we celebrate the womenmothers, grandmothers, aunts, friendswho have loved and cared for us. It is through their unconditional love and compassion that we begin to understand the way in which God cares for us; and the command of Christ to love our neighbors as we love ourselves comes alive. Mothers Day is also a day to remember and support the thousands of people who struggle with poverty and receive the love and compassionate help of Catholic Charities. The Catholic Charities Collection on Mothers Day gives us the opportunity to participate in the Gospel mission to love and serve the poor. It provides us with an extraordinary chance to support a critical mission of the Churchthe care of our hungry, homeless and hurting brothers and sisters, many of whom may live right in your own parish communities. Catholic Charities relies on funding from the Mothers Day Collection to help serve more than one million people of all ages, races and religions in Cook and Lake Counties. Families, children, pregnant and parenting teens, seniors and veterans who have served our country most bravely come to Catholic Charities for the basic necessities of life: food, clothing and housing. Catholic Charities meets these basic needs with patience and understanding, and then provides a broad range of professional services to help their clients work their way out of poverty, addressing the problems that keep them from independence and self-sufficiency. Catholic Charities is the public face of the Churchs love for all in Christs name. I am profoundly grateful to the devoted staff, volunteers and donors who dedicate themselves to the mission of charity in the Archdiocese of Chicago. I thank you for your past support, and I urge you to please, once again, take the opportunity to bring Christs love to the most vulnerable among us by participating in the Catholic Charities Collection on Mothers Day. May God bless you and your families. You and those you love are in my prayers; please keep me in yours.

Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago

WAITING FOR THE SPIRIT In todays Gospel from Luke, Jesus recalls his (and the apostles) mission. He directs them to return to the city and wait for the promise of the Father. He blesses them and is taken up into heaven. This taking up suggests being carried up like an acceptable sacrifice ascending to the throne of God. The apostles, nourished on scriptures that spoke of acceptable sacrifices, understand this. They go to Jerusalem to wait and pray. The first reading reiterates and further develops this experience. Here too, Jesus directs his apostles to return to Jerusalem and wait. But something new is disclosed: they are to await the powerful baptism of the Holy Spirit. We know that in a few short days the powerful Spirit will come to the apostles. We can be grateful that they stayed and waited, whatever their trepidation. From their example, we learn what it takes to wait and be open to the coming of the Holy Spirit. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

* * * Many people go on holidays every year. We need time away to recharge our batteries and replenish our energy. Many go on vacation to all sorts of interesting places. As well as going on holidays priests and religious also go on holidays with the Lord; it is called a retreat. Priests and Sisters take this holiday with the Lord every year but an increasing number of lay people also take this holiday with the Lord, a retreat, every year. Why? The pace of life is such now that we need a quiet time to spend with the Lord, loving him and soaking up his love and reflecting on our lives and where were going. We all need our private space and time apart, our time with the Lord. After Jesus Ascension his disciples returned to the upper room where they had celebrated the Last Supper and gathered in prayer with Mary, the women, the apostles and many disciples. They needed time apart after Jesus Ascension. It was like a time of retreat for them. Jesus had said to them to stay in the city until they were clothed with power from on high (Luke 24:49). Jesus had promised that he would send them a Comforter or Advocate, the Holy Spirit. So they spent these days on retreat praying for the Holy Spirit. Although Jesus would no longer be with them as he had been, he would continue to be with them as they celebrated the Eucharist and would be with them through his Spirit whom they would receive at Pentecost after this time of prayer together. Remembering Mary, the women, apostles and disciples gathered in prayer for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit reminds us of the importance of praying for what we need. While prayer is principally to make us more open to God, to help us respond better to Gods grace in our lives, we also believe that Gods love leads him to hear and answer our prayers of petition. We greatly admire the faith of people who pray to God every day for a request and a long time afterwards have their prayer answered. Is prayer wasting time instead of doing something good? We need both work and prayer in our lives. Remember what Jesus said to Martha who was busy serving Jesus while Mary sat listening at his feet, Martha, Martha, you worry and fret about so many things and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part and it shall not be taken from her. (Luke 10:41-42). If we do not pray every day there is a huge void in our lives and we cannot hope to be happy. Even though not all prayers are answered in they way we desired, hopefully we can see that we have received graces we probably would not have received had those prayers been answered as we wished. We have plans and sometimes our plans are not fulfilled. Our lives can sometimes revolve around me or I or myself. But God has still more wonderful plans for us if we will allow them to be fulfilled. During this week before Pentecost please pray like Mary, the women, the apostles and disciples for a renewed outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Church and on all of us that we may respond to God better. Please believe that your prayer will be answered. Pray that our celebration of Pentecost will lead to the Church being renewed and strengthened by Gods Spirit. Also as well as going on holidays every year why not give some thought to taking a holiday with the Lord by going on a retreat? By Fr. T. Lane
