We thought you might find the following information interesting. The NAHB has just released the results of a survey that gives us the cost breakdown of what goes into building a typical home. These costs include only the installation of major building items and what share of the total construction budget that they consume. They do not include any land cost, realtor or builder fees, or financing costs. Keep in mind this is just an average.

As you can see, the most expensive part of your home is the building skeleton, at 14% of total cost, which includes the framing of the walls and roof. The next most expensive, at 9.3%, is getting the piece of land ready for the house and putting in the foundation to hold up the house. Check out the remainder of the items and see if any of them surprise you.
If youd like more information on this survey, go to the NAHB website and search for New Construction Cost Breakdown or go to: http://www.nahb.org/generic.aspx?genericContentID=169974.
