Introduction Typical Electrical Gate Valve - Assembly Typical Schematic of System Components Electrical Operation 1533VX Electrical Relief Valve 1538VX Electrical Relief Valve 1525VX Electrical Relief Valve
Introduction
Electrical Relief Valves are available in sizes 2 and 6. Electrical valves are specifically designed for applications that include small co-generation boilers up to large power boilers such as found in electric power generating plants. Valve configurations vary depending on application and size. All designs are electrically operated for opening and closing pressures. Electrical Relief Valves are designed to exhaust to atmosphere and are not intended for services where toxic or hazardous media must be contained in a closed system. The total Electrical system provides the flexibility of manual control and the safety of automatic pressure relief of the pressurized system.

Use of Electrical Relief Valves provides the plant operator with a control system that can instantaneously open or close a pressure relief valve on a distantly located header or drum, resulting in the capability of accurately balancing boiler operation at peak load conditions and the ability to maintain a more uniform line pressure.

This Figure illustrates the relationship of the various components of the Consolidated Electromatic Relief Valve system. The solenoid-operated VALVE is usually mounted on the superheater outlet header, the CONTROLLER close to the boiler and the CONTROL STATION on the boiler control panel board. Electromatic Relief Valves are to be installed in accordance with instructions specified in applicable "Installation and Maintenance Manual" supplied with each order.

Electrical Relief Valves 1533 VX Electrical Relief Valve Valve Operation Solenoid Function
Steam under pressure from the boiler, super heater, or other pressure vessel enters the main valve through the inlet chamber (A) and passes upward through the passages in cage (1) into chamber (B). Steam enters chamber (C) through the drilled hole (3). The main valve disc (2) is held in the closed position by steam pressure in chamber (C). The pressure in chamber (C) is the same as in chamber (B) when escape through port (D) is prevented by the closure of pilot valve disc (4). The pilot valve disc (4) is held in the closed position by pilot valve spring (5) and by the steam pressure in chamber (E). It is opened by the operating lever (6) under the action of the solenoid plunger head (7).

Electrical Relief Valves 1533 VX Electrical Relief Valve Valve Operation Solenoid Function
When the pilot valve is opened, steam is released from chamber (D) through port (F) at a faster rate than supplied through the drilled hole (3). The resultant imbalance of pressures in chambers (B) and (C) produces a force which moves the main valve disc from its seat permitting steam to escape from chamber (B) to the outlet (G). The main valve is held closed by the full line pressure until the moment of opening; the operating gap - or difference between operating pressure and set pressure - in Electrical Relief Valve can be reduced to an absolute minimum without leakage (in constrast to spring-loaded valves where the disc is held to the seat by differential pressure which is proportional to the operating gap). When pilot valve closes as a result of the solenoid being de-energized, steam is trapped in chamber (C) where it builds up pressure and forces the main valve disc (2) back down on its seat thereby closing the main valve.

makes extremely sensitive regulation possible. (For pressures below 40 psi, bellows are used instead of Bourdon tubes.)

mounted on the control panel with electrical connections to the Type 2539 Controller, with the Control Station switch on "Automatic", the amber light is "ON" and remains "ON" until the valve is opened. When the pressure in the drum or superheater outlet reaches the pre-determined point at which the valve is set to open and contact is made in the Controller, the relay closes and almost instantly, the solenoid is energized, the valve opens and a red light indicates that the valve is open. When the pressure within the vessel drops and the valve closes, the red light goes out, and the amber light comes on. To actuate the valve manually, the Control Station is switched to "Manual", and the valve closes by turning the switch to "Off". When the switch is on "Automatic", the valve will operate at the pre-determined pressure for which it was set.
