INTRODUCTION
Welcome to Learning to Read and Write Uyghur! . The purpose of this text book is
to help you learn the Uyghur alphabet. It is not intended to give you a detailed
description of each letters pronunciation or to show you each letters stroke order; your
teacher or tutor should help you with these aspects. This text book can be used alongside
other available resources such as the Uyghur Ilipe primer book.
There are 32 letters in the Uyghur alphabet. This text book is designed to help you
learn the alphabet in eight lessons with each lesson covering four letters. It is suggested
that you do two lessons a week if you are on a normal language learning schedule. If you
are doing intensive language learning you may choose to go more quickly. Even if you
are moving along more slowly, you should be able to master the Uyghur alphabet in two
months.
I acknowledge this is a very simple and basic book, but I hope that it is helpful to
English speakers who are at the beginning stages of learning the language. Be looking
for a more complex text book that I am working on entitled Beginning Uyghur for
English Speakers. You will need to be able to read and write Uyghur to start this text
book, hence the inspiration behind this simple book. The text book will include texts,
vocabulary, grammar points, cultural points, lesson exercises, application exercises,
comprehensive exercises, and picture helps. Coming your way soon!

Learning the Uyghur Alphabet!

Here we will introduce the Uyghur alphabet in alphabetical order, explaining the sounds
and giving some exercises. At this time, there is no need to learn the meanings of the
words, just learn the sounds and how to read and write the letters/words. There are 32
letters in the Uyghur alphabet: 8 vowels and 24 consonants. Most letters have four
different forms: beginning, front connecting, middle connecting, and alone. Lets begin!
LESSON\DAY #1:
1) The first letter, a vowel, sounds like the aw in paw or saw. It has a beginning
form, front connecting, pause front connecting and alone form. It never connects from
the back. Have your teacher show you how to write the letter correctly. Then write out
one row of each form, saying the sound of the letter as you write it.
